Reusing gift bags

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/12/2020 18:11

A conversation that occurred with my Mum today
DH asked me while I was on the phone if we had any gift bags left, joked about cutting the previous tag off.
My mum then asked me if reused gift bags and seemed shocked that we do. I've got one that seems to come back on a biannual basis for example.
She claims that no one does this (except my DHs family, as obviously we do to get that particular one back

So are we the only ones?
YABU... It's just you
YANBU... We reuse gift bags

(They get retired when they get grotty. But they still last a few uses!)

I have enough baby girl and baby boy ones to last the rest of my lifetime tucked away in a draw 😂

Love to reuse gift paper and bags!

It's really cheered me up that the vast majority on the thread reuse, with only one person needlessly frittering away the Earth's dwindling resources.

inappropriateraspberry · 18/12/2020 22:11

I had to throw one out yesterday. The handle had snapped and it was just too creased from many re-uses! It felt awful as it was a shiny one so couldn't be recycled either.
Of course you re-use them. How wasteful to just get rid!

inappropriateraspberry · 18/12/2020 22:13

I also save ribbon from gifts and found a stash of wired gold berries I salvaged from some crackers one year!

RobinsEggBlue · 18/12/2020 22:14

I’ve got a piece of wrapping paper I’ve been using with a friend for the last 6 years!

Vergingontheridiculous · 18/12/2020 22:57

All the best people don't write on the tag

checkingforballoons · 18/12/2020 23:31

I want to know who is buying them! Is it just a few incredibly wealthy people, and then the bags filter down to the rest of us? 🤔

katy1213 · 18/12/2020 23:33

I'd swear I've never actually bought one! Or a jiffy bag.

Mangerfield · 18/12/2020 23:36

I had some lovely wrapping paper last year, picture of a dog and postbox, all snowy. Hardly had any left this year and was wishing I had more (my toddler loves doggies).
Opened a parcel from MIL and a few presents were wrapped in the same paper, reused from when I'd given their presents last year! Was happy to see it!
And yeah I have a stash of gift bags, never buy any, they all get passed around!

Mangerfield · 18/12/2020 23:39

Realised as well when wrapping presents I managed to use the same wrapping paper - with sticker gift tag stuck on - for same person this year. "Dear Grandad, with love from XYZ". Was probably the same (sort of) present as well... Blush

TheClitterati · 18/12/2020 23:45

I've never purchased a gift bag. But I have a stash of about 15 different sizes.

Everyone reuses them surely? Who would hate the planet so much they wouldn't? 😁

caringcarer · 18/12/2020 23:48

I use them over and over again. Mad not to. I also keep old Xmas cards and son uses pinking shears and hole punch to make gift tags for following year. It occupies him for a whole afternoon. He makes enough for whole family to use. Very helpful and a good habit to teach your Mother.

Keeping2ChevronsApart · 19/12/2020 00:01

All my family reuse and we try not to write on the tag either for this purpose. We laugh wen we get certain favourite ones back again !

Appleofmyeye05 · 19/12/2020 00:10

I actually gave some presents in a gift bag from last year, today.

I have some bags left from my baby shower which I will re use for my brothers and their partners baby gifts.

One of the baby shower bags I was given had a gorgeous picture of a giraffe on, so I cut it up and framed it. Not quite re-usable, but still re-used!

twinkleprincess2020 · 19/12/2020 00:31

one of my Auntys always makes sure to not write on the tag and reminds us to reuse it.
I thought we all did that if still in good condition

PerveenMistry · 19/12/2020 00:42

Of course one should reuse them. FFS.

BrummyMum1 · 19/12/2020 00:56

All the best people don't write on the tag

^^This

Greenpolkadot · 19/12/2020 06:12

My sister had a small carboard box that her and a friend passed between them for many years, Each year the giver would write a small message on it until there was no more space, they grew older, stopped gifting etc. My sister still has it tucked away somewhere.
But yes,,all the best people recycle gift bags,,

Wishing14 · 19/12/2020 06:22

If I buy a gift bag I leave the label blank so it can be re-gifted! Grin seems such a waste not to reuse!

Puzzledtenant · 19/12/2020 06:30

I always reuse gift bags, would be mad not to and never write on tags. I always have to buy some though, never get as many coming back to me as I have to give out. DHs family never use a gift bag, just wrap everything in the cheapest paper, no snobbery about that but it means there's definitely nothing for me to reuse Sad

MaMaD1990 · 19/12/2020 06:31

Haha I've reused them for years! When DD was born we had sooo many, I'm still using them now! YANU

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/12/2020 06:38

Is this the closest to a consensus MN has ever had?

OP posts:
lemonsquashie · 19/12/2020 07:57

Of course

Have known my mum to reuse paper too

thecatsthecats · 19/12/2020 08:38

My parents' forenames both begin with the same letter, and they have a valentines card each saying "Love T", that they swap every year.

They got really agitated when they couldn't find them.

I reuse gift bags. My ILs think that this is such a bizarre and unique thing to do, but at the end of a party they hustle up all the used ones to give to me (I never asked!). If it sounds pass-agg, I can assure you it isn't - they just seem to embrace me as an oddity Grin

YuletidePizza · 19/12/2020 11:26

I reuse! Why waste bags? Ive rarely needed to buy one. I curse the people who write on tags or sellotape over the top Hmm
