Reusing gift bags

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/12/2020 18:11

A conversation that occurred with my Mum today
DH asked me while I was on the phone if we had any gift bags left, joked about cutting the previous tag off.
My mum then asked me if reused gift bags and seemed shocked that we do. I've got one that seems to come back on a biannual basis for example.
She claims that no one does this (except my DHs family, as obviously we do to get that particular one back

So are we the only ones?
YABU... It's just you
YANBU... We reuse gift bags

(They get retired when they get grotty. But they still last a few uses!)

I never write on the gift tags, just so the recipient can reuse it

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 18/12/2020 20:34

My sis and I have been passing one back and forth each Christmas for at least 15 years .,....it still has the original tag with added messages that have now spilled over to the front.

Yes, I have a child. I’m still not interested in all the woke environmental bullshit going aroun

What an idiotic comment 🙄 Caring about the environment isn’t “woke”. It’s responsible.

God help your child with a parent like you.

OP, I would never not reuse a gift bag.

Lulu1919 · 18/12/2020 20:38

Always re use !!!!

Billben · 18/12/2020 20:39

I don’t reuse them; I just bin them. I wouldn’t be best impressed if someone gave me a used one

I don’t know which emoji I should be using for this comment 😂 or 🙄.

Dobbyismyfavourite · 18/12/2020 20:39

Definitely recycle gift bags in this house.

maryberryslayers · 18/12/2020 20:39

I have a huge box I reuse. I'm sadly very low on Christmas ones and had to buy 2 new ones today. I haven't bought a birthday one in years. I buy mixed packs of tissue paper so I've always got it he right shade to match the bag.

PrivateSpidey · 18/12/2020 20:41

Yes re-use!

We have a superhero one in use in the family that's been circulating for a good few years now. It might be from Woolies as well - it's pretty old. I love seeing it crop up Smile

Poppins2016 · 18/12/2020 20:43

A friend and I keep using the same bag to and from each other because we love it.

I have a decent stash of gift bags in a drawer, however I don't think I've bought one for years... I'd rather spend a bit extra money on a thoughtful present instead!

I don't just save bags. If I really love a certain wrapping paper and there's a decent unmarked/folded/sellotaped amount left after unwrapping I'll save it.

5zeds · 18/12/2020 20:47

Yes we do, and ribbon. There’s one made for a bottle that’s been circulating for more than a decade. I love seeing pop up, it’s fabric and very fancy.Grin

PinkBuffalo · 18/12/2020 20:48

Yanbu always reuse gift bags!

bigpricklyfern · 18/12/2020 20:52

I don’t really use gift bags, so when I have accumulated more than I would ever use, I give them to the charity shop. Wouldn’t dream of binning them unless they were tatty.

RainMoon · 18/12/2020 20:54

We’ve switched to reusable wrapping paper bags, so less waste.

Maryann1975 · 18/12/2020 20:56

Dh commented today that I hadn’t written on the label of a gift bag I was sending to his sister. I answered that the person who gave it to us obviously hadn’t written on the label either. He looked at me in absolute horror that I was refusing the bag. You can tell that he has very little to do with present buying and Distribution normally. I don’t think I have ever bought a gift bag, yet I seem to have about 100 of them in the Christmas card/wrapping bag.

shiningstar2 · 18/12/2020 21:04

I definitely reuse gift bags. In fact I feel quite irritated if I don't have an appropriate sized one to hand for birthday, Christmas or other gifts. It feels a bit like extravagance to have to actually buy any. Grin

Scarby9 · 18/12/2020 21:10

In the 1970s a friend's mum used to spend Christmas Day afternoon ironing the wrapping paper from everyone's presents while the family watched a film together. My friend said the smell of hot paper took her back to her childhood!

mouse70 · 18/12/2020 21:13

Always re use if un damaged. They are so expensive to buy and then throw away!!

DriveThroughSwabber · 18/12/2020 21:18

I reuse gift bags and wrapping paper, I cut up cards for gift tags, and my family reuse gift tags too - carefully collected up and handed back to the donor. When I was a kid, we had the same concertina paper garlands for years and years. I think my patents still have the ball and the bell - they came flat and you opened it out and clipped the edges together.

Gurufloof · 18/12/2020 21:21

Theres one in my circle. Its gold netting type. It does big birthdays/wedding anniversaries/new born type events, holds the equivalent of around three bottles. When it's in my possession I buy new tissue paper and a scoop of confetti for whatever the contents. Its lovely and has lasted at least 7 years now. Glad to hear so many are reused. They do cost a small fortune. I got into gift bags cos I'm just shit at wrapping.

CoronaIsADick · 18/12/2020 21:27

I've got about 50 gifts bags for various different occasions in my cupboard waiting to be reused..you are definitely nbu

AlwaysLatte · 18/12/2020 21:30

I reuse them if they don't look used (crinkled or tape on them). I just put new tags on. It's wasteful to just throw them away.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 18/12/2020 21:31

Wow.

I save good lengths of ribbon, tissue paper, big sheets of good paper as well as gift bags.

And this year I have tags made from last year's Christmas cards.

I hate the massive waste of Christmas - bins full of paper and boxes etc.

HalfBrick · 18/12/2020 21:32

The only one I haven't been able to reuse is a Happy Easter wide but shallow one we got once. Nothing of use fits in it so can't even use it as a joke!

Justcallmebebes · 18/12/2020 21:32

I always save to recycle. Always have

sayanythingelse · 18/12/2020 21:33

Me and MIL have passed one back and forth for years now. The best part is we have the same name so the tag says "To Jane from Jane". No tag removal required Grin
