Reusing gift bags

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/12/2020 18:11

A conversation that occurred with my Mum today
DH asked me while I was on the phone if we had any gift bags left, joked about cutting the previous tag off.
My mum then asked me if reused gift bags and seemed shocked that we do. I've got one that seems to come back on a biannual basis for example.
She claims that no one does this (except my DHs family, as obviously we do to get that particular one back

So are we the only ones?
YABU... It's just you
YANBU... We reuse gift bags

(They get retired when they get grotty. But they still last a few uses!)

I have reused gift bags for years, why wouldn't you?

I also use pinking shears on Christmas cards to make gift tags too.

CodenameVillanelle · 18/12/2020 18:20

It's grim to bin gift bags then buy more to use. Wasteful and crap.

If only I could I could drop you about 30 bottle bags 🐿[/quote]
You don't happen to live in a small village on the Cambridgeshire / Suffolk border??

🤣🤣🤣

StillWeRise · 18/12/2020 18:20

I can't believe anyone doesn't reuse gift bags !!

VicMackey · 18/12/2020 18:22

@Chasingsquirrels
Sorry ...no but I did a ‘stock take’ last weekend and I’ve got LOADS of them....won’t throw them away though - they don’t even take up room when flattened do they....
🐿

We have a drawer full of various sized Christmas and birthday gift bags. We always refuse - over and over again in fact. I specifically put our Christmas presents in gift bags because I can't be bothered to wrap them to be more environmentally friendly.

Lindy2 · 18/12/2020 18:26
  • reuse not refuse!
ImRealHonest · 18/12/2020 18:27

We had a running joke for years with my friend. We had one gift bag, and it was used for my birthday, her birthday, my H’s birthday and her DHs birthday.

I thought this was normal.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/12/2020 18:28

Thanks all. In my mum's defence, I'm not sure she has ever recieved presents in gift bags. She gets something through the post from her sisters, and then receive gifts from me, my brother and my dad. However she buys generously for my DDs and DH (plus my brother, Dad and me).

Reuse. I've bought dh some reusable fabric ones this year, he'll love them as he hates wrapping.

Wellyouknowbest · 18/12/2020 18:30

I've only bought four small new ones this year, all my others are reused, I try not to give them to the same person though, I also give the larger ones back to my mum every year for my mum to use for my kids presents, and one of aunties sends.my presents in a very pretty Santa sack each year that I get to re gift to others!x

I was actually rooting through the attic today looking for gift bags, and was worried some might look obviously used. I don't usually worry because they are usually pristine for so long but I was scraping the bottom of the barrel today! I did have to buy some new ones this year too, and I actually asked DH's opinion about commuting the sin of writing on the label, usually I don't because I'd rather people could reuse them, but this year we are dropping off groups of gifts to one relatives and I wanted to make their life easier for distributing.

VetiverAndLavender · 18/12/2020 18:33

Tbh, I'd think poorly of someone who threw them out after one use. As long as they're in nice condition, of course they're reusable! It's wasteful to throw them away after a single use.

TicTacTwo · 18/12/2020 18:34

Yanbu
I don't understand why she wouldn't reuse?

LastChristmas20 · 18/12/2020 18:35

Yeah reuse until they break.

evilharpy · 18/12/2020 18:36

Of course I reuse them - and I also cut up last year's card with pinking shears to make gift tags.

We reused wrapping paper when I was a child if it could be removed without tearing.

Ticklemynickel · 18/12/2020 18:38

Always reuse. I'm always annoyed when I don't have the right occasion gift bag in my stash.

UndertheCedartree · 18/12/2020 18:39

What on earth does your mum do with them??Confused

gottakeeponmovin · 18/12/2020 18:39

Of course everyone re uses them

luckylavender · 18/12/2020 18:42

Why wouldn't you?

YellowPostItPad · 18/12/2020 18:42

Your mum is wrong. Many far the majority of people reuse them. It's for the environment and cost.

thecuriousfox · 18/12/2020 18:44

Always reuse them! In fact I've just hunted one out and cut off the previous tag so I can give it to my sister for her birthday!

1forAll74 · 18/12/2020 18:45

I re-use all the time, if I need a special larger one, you can always find one in a charity shop. The same with those very large strong supermarket bags, you can get a bundle of ten whatever, for 50 pence.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/12/2020 18:46

We reuse them. Why wouldn't you?

Missannelliot · 18/12/2020 18:47

Absolutely reuse!! I have a large stash in the study cupboard arranged by occasion (birthday, Christmas, baby gift, general and bottle). I’m still trying to get through all the baby girls ones I got when DD was born 6 years ago!! And I did have one that was passed between my sister in laws for years as a joke. I think it fell apart.
