Reusing gift bags

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/12/2020 18:11

A conversation that occurred with my Mum today
DH asked me while I was on the phone if we had any gift bags left, joked about cutting the previous tag off.
My mum then asked me if reused gift bags and seemed shocked that we do. I've got one that seems to come back on a biannual basis for example.
She claims that no one does this (except my DHs family, as obviously we do to get that particular one back

So are we the only ones?
YABU... It's just you
YANBU... We reuse gift bags

(They get retired when they get grotty. But they still last a few uses!)

We reuse too. I couldn't throw out a beautiful bag!

WobblyLondoner · 18/12/2020 19:30

Don't tell your mum but I have even been known to reuse gift tags! YANBUGrin

PandemicPalava · 18/12/2020 19:31

I've happily collected a dozen from dd's birthday, stocks replenished!

Demitri · 18/12/2020 19:32

I literally have a cupboard dedicated to them and reuse them all the time. Why would you not? It’s a running joke with my dm and I because we’ve been passing the same gift bag back and forth for years!!!

woodhill · 18/12/2020 19:33

Always reuse, good for the environment.

LuckyNumberThirteen · 18/12/2020 19:35

I purposely don't write on the tags so they can be reused.

hansgrueber · 18/12/2020 19:37

I noticed that the wrapping paper bag had quite a few bags for all occasions in there, especially bottle bags.

PhylisPrice · 18/12/2020 19:38

Only ever poll I have seen on here that's 100% for one answer with 600 odd votes 😂 definitely reuse! It's even better when your present buyer hasn't written the tag out for you haha!

firesong · 18/12/2020 19:38

Yep I reuse them, when I remember I have one! I don't buy them anyway.

ComDummings · 18/12/2020 19:39

I have never seen a unanimous poll with so many votes 😂 I always reuse gift bags! Or let the kids cut them up for crafts

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 18/12/2020 19:39

I just used some this afternoon, they look great, why wouldn't we. Just trying to recall who gave what last year.
Your mum is being unreasonable.

steppemum · 18/12/2020 19:40

actually this thread has really made me laugh.

I reuse bags, and I don't buy bags.

WHO BUYS THE BAGS?

or do they spontaneously reproduce in the drawer? Grin

viques · 18/12/2020 19:41

I reuse, most people I know do too, the secret is to never write on the bags label.

Odile13 · 18/12/2020 19:41

Yes, I reuse gift bags. My mum and I pass them back and forwards between us. In my opinion it’s wasteful to buy new ones and throw away each time.

Oysterbabe · 18/12/2020 19:41

We've got stacks of them. I can't remember the last time we bought one, we always reuse.

Toadintheroad · 18/12/2020 19:42

I never write on a gift bag label so they can be reused!! Everyone re uses gift bags!

EggnogAndAMincepie · 18/12/2020 19:42

Reuse until the bottom falls out, the sides rip or the handles fall off

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 18/12/2020 19:43

I reuse them, and occasionally really nice wrapping paper too!

invisibleoldwoman · 18/12/2020 19:44

The etiquette is to not write on the tags so they can be reused and everyone pretends they are new.

emilyfrost · 18/12/2020 19:45

I don’t reuse them; I just bin them. I wouldn’t be best impressed if someone gave me a used one.

Strokethefurrywall · 18/12/2020 19:46

I have two drawers devoted entirely to gift bags I've received and will reuse!

MargaretHooper · 18/12/2020 19:46

I have a cupboard for them and reuse all the time too. Why ever not? Cut the gift tag bit off and replace with a cut down old Christmas card!

thosetalesofunexpected · 18/12/2020 19:46

Hi Op
Good idea recycle stuff in that way,why not, nothing wrong with this
Its going back to old school traditional values of yesterday years era etc such as 1940s etc making clothes/alternating clothes items yourself...

steppemum · 18/12/2020 19:47

@emilyfrost

I don’t reuse them; I just bin them. I wouldn’t be best impressed if someone gave me a used one.
90% of the time you can't tell it isn't new though.

So you have probably been given loads of reused ones and just assumed that they were new!

Terribly wasteful and bad for the environment to only use once.

starfishmummy · 18/12/2020 19:47

I actually asked DH's opinion about commuting the sin of writing on the label, usually I don't because I'd rather people could reuse them

Written on labels can be carefully cut off!!
