To think a woman wouldn't be praised for this like a man was

Seen this story a few times today about Tom Cruise screaming at crew members on the set of Mission Impossible 7 for not social distancing and threatening to fire them www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/entertainment-arts-55330579

The comments on social media are almost unanimously positive, lots of "good for him" "well done Tom" and "he's gone up in my estimation".

Any time I see something like this I imagine how the reaction would be if it was a story about a woman. If Nicole Kidman had done this I bet my bottom dollar she'd be branded a psycho, hysterical, over emotional, needs to calm down, who does she think she is speaking like that to those poor men etc.

FWIW I think he behaved appallingly if my boss screamed at me at work I'd have something to say about it.

But AIBU to think a woman would have been treated differently for doing the same thing?

There are always double standards with the way women are portrayed and treated compared to men. FWIW I think that he sounded completely nuts and I wouldn't have hung around after that. However, I guess America is in such an awful state right now in a pandemic that the government is just letting rip through the nation. I guess people are rightfully scared. However, it was his superior manner and that's not the first time he's behaved like this. He seems completely unhinged. We need to start appropriating the language used against us.

thegrassisgreenwhereyouwaterit · 16/12/2020 19:31

Reading in the paper that he shouted and swore gives the impression that he just said a couple of sentences. The full audio was played this morning on the tv. My god he’s an absolute nutcase. He went crazy for about three or four minutes, screaming and shouting. Katie Holmes clearly had a very lucky escape with this guy.

LaceyBetty · 16/12/2020 19:33

100% agree OP.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 16/12/2020 19:35

The point is that you are telling me that I as a woman can never defend a man against other women , or if a woman makes any kind of claim against a man (I mean ridiculous ones like this , not abuse and the like ) then we must unanimously support it , or we are not proper women or feminists.

What a tremendous exaggeration. I don't pretend to tell any strangers who they can and Can't stick up for. But you perpetuate so many myths, refuse to looks at statistics (which contrary to your belief, do matter) and make a song and dance about the minority of men who suffer rather than the majority of women. You're more horrified at women's behaviour than men's same behaviour. You think women are responsible for men's duck ups and should pick up the pieces. I just think it's funny you call yourself a feminist

This thread could be interesting if some posters could ignore each other for long enough to actually have a discussion

I think Mr Cruise went over the top with the yelling and swearing, some times calm and angry works a lot better. I understand why he is upset by the whole situation

I think a woman would have been called hysterical at the very least

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 16/12/2020 19:37

There are always double standards with the way women are portrayed and treated compared to men

Yes i agree that this is often the case, i think its getting better but fuck me its taking years just to inch ahead

PicsInRed · 16/12/2020 19:38

Gemma Collins has made a living out of screeching and bawling and shouting and being an all round diva. She is far from shamed.

Can you tell me a man who has done this?

Philip Schofield.

You're welcome.

BrumBoo · 16/12/2020 19:40

I dont disagree, however once you suggest not responding to a certain poster they start suggesting its 'bullying', and trying to 'silence opposing voices'.

Funkyfriends · 16/12/2020 19:42

I do wonder if anybody screamed at Tom Cruise when he didn’t follow H & S when he broke his ankle on set performing a stunt that shut down production, and wonder what he would of done if someone had.

(Something tells me they wouldn’t be working on set anymore)

GlummyMcGlummerson · 16/12/2020 19:42

I can't even be bothered with that , partly because despite you being dismissive of my experience as a domestic abuse survivor I can't bring myself to be dismissive of your role

I'm not dismissive of your experience I've simply said it's irrelevant when you're more horrified about the yhe negligible number of case accusations than you are female victims of male violence

We said yes. You didn't like it, because the only acceptable answer is yes.

I'm fine with people saying YABU. Several have an I haven't called them on it. But you in particular have escalated it into a "god you're such a sexist OP what about the poor accused men I could never be a feminist because of you". You've made some very similar handmaiden views in the short time I've seen your posts on this site, but you don't seem to like being called on it

Is he being praised though?

It went on for 3 minutes. There's making a point and then there's making a point.

GabsAlot · 16/12/2020 19:45

they should do it then whats so had about wearing a mask and sd

GlummyMcGlummerson · 16/12/2020 19:47

@chomalungma

Look on social media - lots of fawning over how great he was.

I haven't seen the video and the BBC article I posted didn't link to it so people are reading from the article which still makes him sound pretty bad

mutantelfoftraal · 16/12/2020 19:47

@SherryPalmer

She’d 100% be called a “Karen”.
^ This. And we all know how unreasonable it is to call somebody a Karen.
RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 16/12/2020 19:48

Hes very ranty glummy

I don’t think that gets the message across well

Flapjak · 16/12/2020 19:49

Tom 'karen' cruise!!

If he had been a she , she would have been villified. It was completely abusive behaviour and an abuse of power. Megalomaniac

GlummyMcGlummerson · 16/12/2020 19:50

For those saying he was in the right here's the link to the audio

You're seriously telling me a woman screaming (yes he was screaming @MaskingForIt) like this wouldn't be called a Karen?

chomalungma · 16/12/2020 19:51

You should hear it.
It goes on for 3 minutes.
It is bad.

berryhead2013 · 16/12/2020 19:52

@SherryPalmer I was just going to say that

chomalungma · 16/12/2020 19:54

Look on social media - lots of fawning over how great he was

Looks like some people are praising him, some people are having a go at him

Flapjak · 16/12/2020 19:56

I think he was on the verge of screaming , he was certainly beyond shouty a bit cross, he was raging

ChestnutStuffing · 16/12/2020 19:58

The OPs premise is false.

Plenty of people think Cruise is being a dickhead and have said so. My observation is that those who say he is being fine are generally people who are for shaming and yelling at anyone they don't think is being careful enough about covid. (Not a small group, TBF.)

As for John McEnroe, everyone always thought he was an inappropriate assshat.

TheWichitaWineOne · 16/12/2020 19:59

I don’t think you should swear at people in the work place or shout. I thinking you should communicate in a professional way even if your angry

I agree. I have experienced high pressure professional environments where screaming, bullying and tears were the norm - it was absolutely bloody awful, intimidating and stressful beyond belief.

JohnMcClane · 16/12/2020 20:01

I don't want to watch it, I did see the Scientology film, Going Clear and it really freaked me out. I think it explains a lot of his behaviour and why certain people are okay with it.

It would be interesting to find out what happened with Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes

GlummyMcGlummerson · 16/12/2020 20:03

It's not really the point, he made a fortune off his temper with sponsorships where he was in adverts "hilariously" screaming at people. Because his temper was considered to be amusing. I doubt anyone will be offering Serena Williams a contract for an advert where everyone gets the lols as she verbally abuses someone
