Pigs in blankets AIBU to think they are overrated?

I just don't get all of the fuss and hype over a greasy little sausage wrapped in a scrappy bit of bacon! I would much rather have an extra turkey on my plate instead. None of my family like them either, are we unusual or are there others out there who agree?

I agree OP! Actually I have never eaten them, they're absolutely not a feature of our traditional Christmas dinner here and they hold zero appeal for me.
Similarly, sausage meat has NO place in stuffing. It is truly disgusting and those flavours just do not go together with turkey. Stuffing should be made with real homemade breadcrumbs (none of that vile paxo either), very finely diced onion softened in lots of butter, then mix into breadcrumbs with salt, pepper, sage, thyme and parsley - that's how to make stuffing!

Adding sausage and bacon to a turkey dinner is meat overload and too many competing flavours.

If I was eating dinner in someone else's house and pigs in blankets were on the table I would pass them up in favour of more slices of delicious turkey!

caperplips · 16/12/2020 11:26

I think I would cry if someone gave me only pigs in blankets for my Christmas dinner - what a disappointment!

unicornparty · 16/12/2020 11:30

I don't like them either.

praepondero · 16/12/2020 11:57

@caperplips

Agree with every word and love your stuffing recipe. The sausagemeat should stay in sausage and never be mixed in a stuffing or anything, really.
As you say, too many competing flavours.

YABU

I’m a vegetarian and I suffer without them Sad and then inevitably “forget” that I’m a vegetarian

Lipz · 16/12/2020 12:12

They wouldn't be big here in Ireland, you can buy them but most traditional dinners here wouldn't have them included, our main dinner would be turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes and veg and gravy. If we're having cocktail sausages it's usually served as party food with a few drinks.

Hohohole · 16/12/2020 17:21

@FortunaMajor

It's all about pigs in duvets. A pig in a blanket in a mini Yorkshire pudding.
Please tell more.... With pictures . Xmas Grin
BrandyandDeath · 16/12/2020 17:23

Not a fan, but no way are they as disgusting as turkey.

FortunaMajor · 16/12/2020 19:11

@Hohohole

If making fresh, then do them as mini individual Toad in the Holes.

If using pre-made Yorkshires then a bit of stuffing and gravy in the bottom before popping the Pig in Blanket in is divine.

Some shops are selling pre-made Pigs in Duvets using puff pastry instead of Yorkshire. These are also lovely, but they should get their own name.

*I bear no responsibility for any heart attacks induced by such deliciousness above.

Just seems to be a gorging fest. But each to their own.

Never heard of pigs in blankets before arriving in UK. I suppose it is tradition. They sound vile to me. But just me mind, I don't care what anyone else eats!

I suggested we do this but was shouted down! I don't get the fuss about turkey, may as well chew cardboard.
Blacktothepink · 16/12/2020 19:25

I prefer plain chipolatas

Hohohole · 16/12/2020 20:33

@FortunaMajor
Oh my! I think I'm a little bit in love. Definitely having these.
Might have to do a test run....

nancybotwinbloom · 16/12/2020 20:34

Overrated they give me pure heartburn like nothing else.

Butteredtoast55 · 16/12/2020 20:51

They've been done to death this year - every possible which way as a flavouring or product. As a veggie I think they're revolting...the naked sausage under the bacon....bleurgh!!! But Mr Toast would eat them morning, noon and night!

catgirl1976 · 16/12/2020 21:10

YABVVU

I drizzle mine in maple syrup and some fennel seeds. Everyone knows pigs in blankets are a God tier Christmas side dish.

Dontsayyouloveme · 16/12/2020 22:06

YANBU I just don’t think sausage and bacon go well together in the same mouthful. It’s conflicting in fact 🤣. Plus, processed meat, wrapped in more processed meat 🤢.

Dontsayyouloveme · 16/12/2020 22:10

TragedyHands great idea, I don’t like them so I’m not going to buy them anymore!

TheWernethWife · 16/12/2020 23:18

Been in M and S this morning. They have chorizo pigs in blankets.

gaggiagirl · 17/12/2020 13:59

Can I ask please, as a non pig in blanket water, which supermarket ones are best to buy? . DH and DC love them but I've never made or bought them before and want amazing ones for them.

gaggiagirl · 17/12/2020 14:00

Eater not water!

Sherin1 · 17/12/2020 14:01

I love them

Grimbot · 17/12/2020 14:21

@TheMarzipanDildo and other vegetarians, there’s a recipe by Tesco for vegetarian pigs in blankets which is halloumi wrapped in aubergine, soooo delicious. I do miss real pigs in blankets though!

starfishmummy · 17/12/2020 14:26

We prefer separate small sausages and bacon rolls. Sausages cook nicely and are not as flabby as those wrapped in bacon.

goose1964 · 17/12/2020 14:47

I spent my entire childhood without a,single out in blanket as they hadn't been invented. I still prefer the old fashioned bacon roll, not bacon in a roll but rolled up bacon.and chipolatas roasted in with the turkey. I'm not a great sausage fan so I could have more bacon.
