Pigs in blankets AIBU to think they are overrated?

I just don't get all of the fuss and hype over a greasy little sausage wrapped in a scrappy bit of bacon! I would much rather have an extra turkey on my plate instead. None of my family like them either, are we unusual or are there others out there who agree?

Oooh YABVVVVVVU!

Haha, to be fair I think it depends how you make them/which ones you buy.

I had some last Sunday to test them out before Christmas and honestly I could have sat there and eaten them for hours.

Butterbeeeen · 15/12/2020 18:42

I adore pigs in blankets. Iv been unwell and havnt had much of an appetite so DH bought me a tray of them to pick at. It didnt half hit the spot. Also pigs in blanket toad in the hole is a new fave in our house.

lazylinguist · 15/12/2020 18:42

I don't get it, OP. Do you usually dislike sausages or bacon? I don't see why being part of Christmas dinner would make them unusually 'greasy' or 'scrappy'. If you use good sausages and good bacon, why wouldn't they be nice?

cherrypiepie · 15/12/2020 18:45

YABVU - I don't know why but they taste so much better than bacon and sausages. The honey and mustard sounds amazing.

Vanillaradio · 15/12/2020 18:46

Ds would say YABU! Every year when I do the Christmas order the first question is did you get pigs in blankets. He's still complaining about the school Christmas dinner that had NO pigs in blankets AT ALL. So they are an essential part of Christmas dinner for us (dh and I quite like them too!)

Pipandmum · 15/12/2020 18:47

Well they are not the main attraction and I survived growing up without them. But I think they are fine, and I just served them at a coffee morning (special trip to M&S as Good Housekeeping rated them highly). But if you have sausagemeat stuffing it is not essential.

Figgygal · 15/12/2020 18:49

I don’t eat pork so never seen the fuss

JorisBonson · 15/12/2020 18:50

OP you are correct!

They are my least favourite part of Christmas dinner.

DH looked ready to draw up divorce papers at this fact.

MrsGrindah · 15/12/2020 18:51

Also they need to be slowly cooked so they are all sticky

Tingalingtortoise · 15/12/2020 18:51

I’m not bothered about them either OP, in fact I don’t put any on my plate because I think they’re wasted on me since I don’t appreciate them and everyone else loves them! I always cook loads though because they’re so popular!

GloGirl · 15/12/2020 18:51

@MNHQ

WE HAVE ANOTHER TROLL

Who could honestly not eat a whole tray of pigs in blankets? I had my first of the season today in fact almost a whole tray

ImNotMeImSomeoneElse · 15/12/2020 18:52

Yanbu imo. Bacon - great. Sausages - great. Wrap bacon around the sausage? Meh. You get this bit of sausage that isn't browned like it should be and it makes the texture worse than if they were served separately. .

Have all the pigs in blankets I've ever been served been cooked wrong then? I've never made them, but I've had them in very good restaurants, so I would be surprised if so.

So they are fine, but definitely overrated.

mollypuss1 · 15/12/2020 18:52

I agree OP, they are massively overrated. I’d much prefer extra Turkey aswell. My DH would vehemently disagree with me however.

TinkersRucksack · 15/12/2020 18:54

YAB exceptionally U.

Sausages? Goooood.

Bacon? Goooooood.

Together? Gooooooooooooood

Petitmum · 15/12/2020 18:55

I'm in my 50s and have had them served to me at Christmas meals in hotels, restaurants and peoples homes. Homemade or shop-bought - I just don't like them, they have never been liked by my extended family. My brother is a chef and makes them because they are expected but he prefers stuffing.
Turkey cooked well and served with homemade stuffing is delicious! Too many people overcook turkey and it tastes like sawdust!!!

altiara · 15/12/2020 18:56

It’s not a Christmas dinner without pigs in blankets, just a roast dinner with a months worth of vegetables. FACT! It’s irrelevant if you like them or not! Grin

Squigglypig2 · 15/12/2020 18:57

I wrap sage and onion stuffing in bacon, so much yummier.

BigFatLiar · 15/12/2020 18:57

Just the two of us for Christmas dinner this year so we're thinking of ditching the turkey and just doing a load of sides with a couple of desserts and a load of cheese and crackers to graze on through the day. PIB will definitely be on the table.

CandyCaneLane0 · 15/12/2020 18:58

Yanbu I'm not keen either but I'll still have one because it's Christmas

GardenersDelight · 15/12/2020 18:58

I do separate sausages and bacon rolls so more all round crispness!

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 15/12/2020 18:59

No interest in them at all. Just never been part of our Christmas menu. Not a fan of turkey, either - we always have a goose.

MaMaD1990 · 15/12/2020 19:01

This is the most unreasonable thing I've seen this week!! 🤣

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 15/12/2020 19:03

@KittenCalledBob

Bread sauce is also awesome.
Agree with this, though. As it will just be two of us this Christmas, I am dispensing with most of the trimmings (in the hope we will eat more goose and avoid too many days of leftovers). But I'm doing the bread sauce! A Christmas morning that doesn't start with sticking cloves into half an onion is not a Christmas morning.
vodkaredbullgirl · 15/12/2020 19:03

I wait all year for pigs in blankets lol

maddiemookins16mum · 15/12/2020 19:07

You’re buying the wrong sausages and bacon then.
