Pigs in blankets AIBU to think they are overrated?

I just don't get all of the fuss and hype over a greasy little sausage wrapped in a scrappy bit of bacon! I would much rather have an extra turkey on my plate instead. None of my family like them either, are we unusual or are there others out there who agree?

OP posts:
riotlady · 15/12/2020 19:42

Anything wrapped in bacon is a winner in my book

Sadbadglad · 15/12/2020 19:43

Pigs in Blankets are not nice....Xmas Angry

Kljnmw3459 · 15/12/2020 19:44

Turkey is much more overrated, not even a 3 Michelin starred chef can make it taste nice.

Kljnmw3459 · 15/12/2020 19:45

Pigs in blankets are meh.

MrsLebowski · 15/12/2020 19:51

YABVVVVVVU as long as Boris doesn't cancel them I am quite sanguine about going into tier 3 for Christmas.

user1471464218 · 15/12/2020 19:53

I have cocktail sausages on my Christmas dinner not pigs in blankets....I think that's traditional in Northern Ireland? Anyway I prefer plain cocktail sausages.

rosegoldwatcher · 15/12/2020 19:56

You are being very unreasonable OP. A sausage in any form is a welcome addition to any plate of food.

We are having rib of beef instead of turkey for our Christmas dinner - I will still expect pigs in blankets as a side dish.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 15/12/2020 19:57

This is the most unreasonable thing I have ever read in my 14 years on MN.

I agree about bread sauce though. Vile stuff.

My American friend makes a hybrid UK/US pig in blanket. Sausage wrapped in bacon wrapped in pastry (croissant not puff). I keep meaning to try it myself.

I do bacon wrapped sausages for toad in the hole too. Its called "posh toad in the hole)

Pigs in blankets and baked camembert are now on the post Christmas menu for ds2 and me.

CaptainPovey · 15/12/2020 20:00

Ugh, greasy and horrid. Slimey

We are having fillet steak for Christmas dinner (presuming we do not get too pissed as has happened on many occasions)

With chips

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/12/2020 20:00

yuk camembert

elp30 · 15/12/2020 20:01

@phoenixrosehere

Isn't that better known as a sausage roll, made with an inferior sausage?

It is closer to a sausage roll, but the pastry is more croissant than puff tbh. The texture would be off if sausage was used,

American pigs in blankets are made with crescent dough which is much lighter than puff pastry. The sausages are smoked cocktail sausages (small) that are already cooked.

I've added a photo so hopefully you can see what they look like.

Turkey is way better, but as someone who only came to pigs in blankets last CovidfreeBliss Christmas, which was my 51st, I am now a fan, not for with dinner but laying around as nibbles

merlotormalbec · 15/12/2020 20:02

YANBU they're horrible

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 15/12/2020 20:03

@AlexaPlayWhiteNoise

You could not be more wrong. They are the best bit. We have them on their own with mash for tea.

I made honey mustard pigs in blanket arranged around a cooked camembert the other week, the pigs in blankets were for dipping in the cheese. I'm still thinking about it. I could not recommend it more as a heart attack waiting to happen meal.

Bloody hell, this sounds delicious! gonna try this out asap screw the possible heart attack
firesong · 15/12/2020 20:04

They're a bit crap really! I will buy ready made ones as I can't be doing with the fuss. I don't normally eat meat anyway

InTheLongGrass · 15/12/2020 20:04

We had pig in blankets in fresh baguette for lunch at the weekend. Delicious!

Mother2princess · 15/12/2020 20:06

We love them 😁 but dislike Turkey

MyMonsteraisDeliciosa · 15/12/2020 20:09

You are very very very unreasonable. This is the most unreasonable post I've ever seen on here.

My dad used to make and cook hundreds of the delicious little fellows every Christmas Eve and fridge them for the big day. One year my little shit of a brother (aged about 17) came in pissed at 2am and ate the whole lot. He has never been forgiven, worst Christmas ever

simonisnotme · 15/12/2020 20:12

never understood 'bread sauce' surely its just like mushy bready yuck
pigs in blankets are essential though

chubbyhotchoc · 15/12/2020 20:15

I find them a bit gross myself. I can manage maybe one. Having said that, I don't really like roast dinners either so Christmas dinner doesn't excite me in general.

DonttouchthatLarry · 15/12/2020 20:15

I've ordered mine from the butcher this morning. We like them in a crusty baguette with ketchup for breakfast on Christmas day - keeps us going until dinner when we get more!

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 15/12/2020 20:15

No, not at all. It has a creamy texture - more like horseradish - but the point is the delicate flavour of cloves and onion.

Mammyloveswine · 15/12/2020 20:15

You need butchers chipolatas and good quality streaky bacon!

Amazing!

User478 · 15/12/2020 20:19

Do you remember the cheese wrapped in bacon? Why can't you get them anymore? They were lush!

(My friend was once offered a plate of them as the vegetarian option at a work do -she was not impressed)

Babdoc · 15/12/2020 20:28

I don’t do pigs in blankets, but I take a pack of smoked streaky bacon and soak it in a good single malt whisky for three days, then use it to completely cover the turkey before roasting.
The DC used to call this “putting the turkey’s pyjamas on”, as it gave a striped appearance!

Once cooked, I serve the crispy pieces of bacon with the turkey meat, rather like crackling with pork.
I disagree that turkey is tasteless - as well as the whisky bacon on top, I put garlic and duck fat underneath its skin to flavour and baste it, then stuff with spiced apricot and chestnut in one half of the cavity, and plum and ginger in the other.
The stuffings get served up with the crispy bacon and are popular with the adult DC.
Much as I like sausages, I think they’re excessive in a Xmas dinner which is already heavy on both meat and calories.
