Pigs in blankets AIBU to think they are overrated?

I just don't get all of the fuss and hype over a greasy little sausage wrapped in a scrappy bit of bacon! I would much rather have an extra turkey on my plate instead. None of my family like them either, are we unusual or are there others out there who agree?

OP posts:

You are doing them wrong. Whole chipolata wrapped in a whole rasher of bacon.

Mittens030869 · 15/12/2020 20:30

Oh YABVU, OP, definitely. As far as I’m concerned, no Christmas meal is complete without pigs in blankets!’ 😂

orangenasturtium · 15/12/2020 21:36

Do you remember the cheese wrapped in bacon? Why can't you get them anymore? They were lush!

M&S always have them in their Christmas party food range. They seem to sell out quickly though.

I make a homemade version with smoked Bavarian cheese wrapped in pancetta. It's not quite the same but it is the only cheese I've found that is plasticy enough not to melt before the bacon cooks but doesn't go rubbery when it's cold, like halloumi Grin

orangenasturtium · 15/12/2020 21:37

The bacon and cheese roll recipe was for @User478!

IhateBoswell · 15/12/2020 21:41

I’m not fussed about them, but then I’m not overly keen on sausages or bacon.

I also prefer turkey to chicken 🍗

AnyFucker · 15/12/2020 21:41

Heresy !

We love Pugs in Rugs. We have them all year round.

movingonup20 · 15/12/2020 21:45

We've always had chipolatas, not sure when pigs in blankets became a thing because I don't remember them from my childhood, then I lived overseas for a while

FortunaMajor · 15/12/2020 21:46

It's all about pigs in duvets. A pig in a blanket in a mini Yorkshire pudding.

nancybotwinbloom · 15/12/2020 22:08

I don't have them on my Xmas donner I'm just not a fan. They don't taste all that to me.

But sausage meat stuffing I could eat all day

AliceMcK · 15/12/2020 22:11

Personally agree with you, cant stand them but I'm the only one in my house who feels this way.

Nowaynl · 15/12/2020 22:12

I make my own veggie ones, have done for years and they’re absolutely lovely. Can’t remember what pork ones taste like, probably super salty...

lakesideadvent · 15/12/2020 22:15

@Babdoc this is an amazing idea that I have reached my mid 40's without ever hearing.
I'm going to start soaking bacon in whisky right away.

UncleBunclesHouse · 15/12/2020 22:15

YABVU! PiBs are the best part of Christmas!

quitecontrary123 · 15/12/2020 22:18

I once had devils on horseback disguised as pigs in blankets. Bloody gorgeous.

Skyshale · 15/12/2020 22:24

Completely agree OP! Never understood the massive hype around them.

Give me extra sprouts any day

Iwantacookie · 15/12/2020 22:28

The ones you buy in the shops are. All tiny and wrapped in smoked bacon. Buy some proper sausages and unsmoked bacon and they are amazing.

Chickenwing · 15/12/2020 22:44

Most unreasonable thread ever.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 15/12/2020 23:04

WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT

therarebear · 15/12/2020 23:07

@GalesThisMorning

I agree. They are gross... salty greasy and too, well, porky! I'm not British so pigs in blankets were new to me... I've choked down a couple to be polite but I leave them to the side nowadays.

I am equally befuddled by bread sauce and that weird white sauce that gets served in a bowl with Christmas pudding.

Yes, bread sauce is fucking weird. (Not British but have lived here 20 years and it still makes me boak just looking at it).
ethelredonagoodday · 15/12/2020 23:07

Oh my lord, I do a ridiculous amount of PIBs at Christmas and there are never any left.

Audreyseyebrows · 15/12/2020 23:08

I have never had a pig in blanket! No idea what the fuss is about!

therarebear · 15/12/2020 23:12

I've gone right off the pigs but I would eat a full plate of devils on horseback, with a side of Yorkshire puddings and gravy.

lakesideadvent · 15/12/2020 23:22

I actually prefer prunes wrapped in bacon.
Sweet salty goodness.

SnowySheep · 15/12/2020 23:49

My mum never did pigs in blankets. We had (have) the turkey liver, wrapped in bacon, about the same size as cocktail sausages. They are absolutely the best bit of Christmas dinner.

Ariela · 16/12/2020 00:30

But quality sausages from a decent butcher, wrapped in equally top quality smoked bacon are not the same as the greasy samples you encountered.
