To ask something you’d love that you can’t ever have

Is there anything in this world you would love to do or have that just isn’t an achievable goal? You know when people say you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it? Well, the thing you can’t have either way.

Mine would be to adopt a child. I have all the love in my heart to give to adoptive children, I know I could love them just as my own and deal with the challenges unconditionally. Unfortunately I have a mental health diagnosis, two previous (malicious) reports to Social Services and a DP who doesn’t feel the same on the subject. I do have biological children but I will always dream of adopting.

Is there anything for you?

To be able to have my loved one back. She died at 18 and I’ll never not have that as my first wish.

In lighter moments, I’d love my figure back, to have not deferred then cancelled my PhD, and Gustaf Skarsgard.

I would wish for my husband to have not got cancer and died, or at least for it to have been diagnosed at a stage where it was still curable. He was such a kind, cheerful and active man with a great sense of humour and it was so hard to watch his health deteriorating over his last year. I miss him and I feel sad for my teenage DC as he was a great dad, although I am very proud of how resilient they have been.

Bluesheep8 · 15/12/2020 12:02

I would wish to have been able to get close enough to my Dad for him to hear and engage with me properly the last time I was able to see him before he died. Standing on the other side of a fence 2+ metres away and wearing a mask made this almost impossible.

To be able to go running and talk normally again. I have an incurable disease that has affected my walking and speech and can only get worse.

On the more cheerful side I would love to have lovely thick curly hair.

A detached house. A pension. A "proper" job. A family. Friends. A brain that isn't mis-wired.

Flowers for everyone who has lost someone

My unattainable wish (which I agree is frivolous and irrelevant when there are people suffering due to racism) is to have slightly darker skin that does not burn so easily.

I love being out in the sunshine at home and on holiday and would love to be able to float around in lovely strappy dresses etc without a) looking like spam b) being in constant fear of failing to apply sunscreen properly and enduring the pain of sunburn and c) being constantly covered in uncomfortable greasy suncream that feels horrible and leaves unpleasant stains on clothes.

I have tried fake tan- but I've never found one that looks right plus it tends to come off unevenly if you use a swimming pool much and requires reapplication during a holiday if you don't want to appear to be reverse tanning (arriving tanned and going home white).
I have also tried all types of sun screen, including 'once a day'. Everything marks and is greasy to some extent, and 'once a day' doesn't work if you ever touch anything (I've had the burned backside to prove that one!).

A home in a quiet place with no loud music, car horns when people can't be arsed to get out and ring the doorbell, engines running outside my bedroom, shouting, and constant knocking down and re-building of houses. Away from firepits and barbeques and bonfires and fireworks for 3 months of the year non stop.

I had a plan, a quiet place with fresh air and a town within walking distance is all I ever wanted, I won't get it now.

And to spend my life with an honest and decent human being. Won't get that either.

Yeahnahmum · 15/12/2020 12:43

@BikeRunSki dinner with your dad.????
Gosh i was going to say not to have mh issues. But hell yeah. I would love to have dinner with my dad too 💕 how lovely that you thought of him and sit down to have a nice dinner.

Prufrocks · 15/12/2020 12:47

A dog. But I’m allergic.

And to leave the thankless slog that is the hospitality industry and all of it’s questionable charms behind.

But I’m working on that.

Rinoachicken · 15/12/2020 12:52

I would love to foster, but don’t have a spare room in my house.

UndertheCedartree · 15/12/2020 12:53

@minmooch - that is heartbreaking. I'm sure your son knew how much he was loved Flowers

To have a child with my DH

I have two kids from my previous two marriages but DH is the love of my life - he has no children.

A couple reasons why this won't happen

I am too old - menopause
My DD2 has learning difficulties and I was sterilised at 26 as I felt I wouldn't be able to cope with another baby whilst looking after her.

I know - I should be grateful with what I have but still... it makes me a little sad.

Claricethecat45 · 15/12/2020 12:56

I would love to NOT have been cheated on by an unfaithful husband and now I can't 'look down' when I'm in the bath anymore....i really miss a lovely self indulgent bath.

JovialNickname · 15/12/2020 12:57

Another one for owning my own home, when I was little I just thought everyone had houses. It never occurred to me it would never be something I could ever aspire to.

unicornpower · 15/12/2020 12:58

A healthy Baby

Woewoewoejoy · 15/12/2020 13:01

Have my own house. We spent our savings on DHs mums emergency operation. They live abroad and it was a fortune. Unfortunately it didn't work and she passed away. So now we have no savings and lost my mother in law. We were going to buy this year but. Now are short and the banks have stacked it up to 15% deposit.... Renting it is :(

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/12/2020 13:02

Smaller feet. Size 9 feet are a pain in the ass; I always have to wear the shoes I can find in my size rather than ones that I want or like.

ReetDortyLass · 15/12/2020 13:05

Another dog. I miss the velvet face and ears and the unconditional love. I am not well enough to have one currently and when I am. if I am ever well enough, I want to travel and then move house. I will ask if I can walk other peoples doggos then just to get the hair and mud and nose boops. A dogs love is like balm to my soul.

praepondero · 15/12/2020 13:07

My first ever boyfriend who loved me so, so much Sad.

To go into space! I'd love to be an astronaut but am sadly an overweight 40 year old of average educational accomplishment.
