www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9048759/Family-kicked-United-flight-New-Jersey-toddler-refused-wear-mask.html

This family were forced to leave a flight home because their two year old wouldn’t ‘comply’ with mask-wearing.

She’s 2.

Has the world gone mad? Surely it’s common sense that a young child should not be forced into a mask? Surely it’s a violation of the rights of the child to insist upon this?

Yes, agreed without question, slashlover.

It's just that some people seem to be assuming that all two-year-olds are identical and I find that a bit, well, strange from people who are so clear that they know all about children of that age.

Yes... I've already said I wouldn't.. now many times would you like me to say it?

So do you agree that the parents in the article were wrong for doing so?

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 14/12/2020 20:41

Yes... I've already said I wouldn't.. now many times would you like me to say it?

Because as ling as there's a choice , no one is forcing a 2 yo to do anything so nothing horrific about it.

Jesus. It still doesn't make the rule "right" - people should still challenge this absolute bullshit even if they choose not to use the service. Why are we accepting this as okay?!

No I don't think they were wrong, they obviously tried to get her to wear a mask. They did what they could.

For fuck's sake IT IS GOVERNMENT GUIDANCE. It is what the Center for Disease Control says is the appropriate age. This is not a policy made up on a whim.

The American pandemic is different than the British pandemic. There are different rules. There are different healthcare systems. There are different logistics and structures. There are different cultural contexts.

It is considered too dangerous to the public to have someone over two years old on a plane without a mask. Here are your choices: have your two-year-old wear a mask, or do not fly. If you think your two-year-old won't wear a mask, or you think it's cruel, or you think it's dangerous, DON'T FUCKING FLY.

Wheresmykimchi · 14/12/2020 21:07

@TrustTheGeneGenie

In all honesty I think it's because people are phrasing it in the wrong way.

If you phrase things as putting a mask on my child is abusive and violent and disgusting and therefore I should be able to travel without doing so and if someone else catches covid tough , people die every day , people aren't going to be on board with the cause.

I agree that the rule is stupid , and I agree that the rule needs challenging , but it's the OPs stance on it that has caused this.

Wheresmykimchi · 14/12/2020 21:08

@TrustTheGeneGenie

I'm not ranting at you.

I'm pointing out that when you make allowances for one group of people , you need to make it for others. Before long you have a plane full of people with no mask.

Bloodypunkrockers · 14/12/2020 21:10

They were making a trip to see a tree

simple choice here was that they didn't travel by plane if they didn't like the rules

Parents were Attention seeking drama queens

As for posters calling it child abuse and violence, get a fucking grip

Wheresmykimchi · 14/12/2020 21:18

Remember the article where the woman moved her chair at a funeral and had to move back because mourners simply couldn't interact?

Imagine the woman had said ah fuck everyone else , I'm not bothered about covid I'm hugging my whoever.

The family got great sympathy following the event. The rule was ridiculous and barbaric , the poor family suffered.

But they knew what they had to do and they did it knowing that it would be horrendous but they had to do it in order to attend the event.

I think that's the difference.

theThreeofWeevils · 14/12/2020 21:23

@EnPoinsettia

Airline should provide oxygenated bubble pods for toddlers.
Crates in the hold would do the trick, imo. Xmas Grin
Takethereigns · 14/12/2020 21:23

Whilst I think it would be difficult to get every 2 year old to comply with mask wearing I don’t think this is the case to be bringing the unfairness of the rules to people’s attention.

It’s obviously staged by these Insta-bores to further their own agenda.

What I noticed about the video is not only is she not wearing a mask, she’s not wearing her seatbelt. Was the fathers solution going to be hold the daughter on his lap for the entire flight?
Convenient that they didn’t film the bits in the middle with the airline staff telling them the rules. I imagine it included having her seatbelt on.

I’ve not heard anything else about people being removed from airlines for not having masks on 2 year olds.
Does anyone else know how frequently it’s actually happened?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/12/2020 21:34

They said they had flown before on United Airlines during the pandemic, so presumably it hadn't happened to them before. If it had they would have known that they couldn't do it unless the child were masked, after all.

Orban also revealed that she and her husband are premier silver members at United and 'always fly with them'.
'In fact, we had flown with Edeline 4 times already since the pandemic, without ever having an issue,' she added.

(I'm assuming Edeline 4 must be part of United, if they always fly with United.)

Mittens030869 · 14/12/2020 21:35

I agree that the rule is extreme and I wouldn't have wanted to make my DDs wear face masks when they were toddlers. But this wasn't why this family made a fuss. It really was just a publicity stunt, and that was all it was.

This also needs to be seen in the context that Covid cases are skyrocketing in the US, and they're having to take drastic action.

Edeline is their daughter. They claim to have flown with her 4 times.

Oh, right. So they knew the rules perfectly well, didn't they. And why are they flitting about the country like this during a pandemic anyway, the irresponsible crothounds?

I struggle to get my two year old to wear clothes and Shoes, coat some days. It's painful

MaryLeeOnHigh · 14/12/2020 22:08

@goopsoup

That's crazy, they should sue.
That would be a fun legal action. "The Defendants wilfully insisted that the claimants adhere to the terms of the contract which they had willingly entered into without any form of compulsion. In so doing the Defendants acted maliciously in breach of contract wrongfully fuckit, there must be something we can accuse them of.
MaryLeeOnHigh · 14/12/2020 22:10

@goopsoup

For what? The airline stated that all passengers over the age of 2 should wear a mask. By buying a ticket , the passengers agreed to those terms and conditions. If you cannot agree to the terms then book with another airline.

They shouldn't have sold a ticket to a 2yo then! The airline is at fault.

They didn't sell a ticket to the 2 year old. They sold it to her parents who presumably knew whether she would or would not wear a mask.
