To ask what is your 'side hustle' and how much do you earn?

I need to preface this with apologising for using the term 'side hustle'. I know it is hated by many Grin

I work part time but over the years I have supplemented my income with various side hustles. Cleaning, buying and selling, cake decorating, etc. Now I tutor and earn about 350 a month extra.

What is your side hustle if you have one and how much do you earn each month from it?

I sell on ebay sometimes.

Mostly toys or clothes my DC grow out of? but I also buy bundles from car boot sales.

I make anything from £0 - £600 a month depending on time of year & how much time & effort I put in.

I have a post office 5 minutes walk away & quite a bit of storage space which makes it do-able. I often pick up bargains out of season like shorts/summer dresses in October. I then wash, sort & store them until April then sell them. The good thing is I keep the best stuff for my DC so they wear it for a year then it gets stored to be sold the following year.

It means I rarely have to buy new basic clothes so can then just buy nice bits & pieces that they choose.

I did very well out of matched betting and made around £10k over the time but you do get gubbed and lots of bookies have gone. Still do a little. I've 'studied' casinos over about 5 years and make around £3k per month for a couple of hours a day. Casino is like anything in life, the more hours experience that you have in it, the more expert you become. I do consider myself a professional gambler. The strategies that I use at my level work every time if you have the self control, which is my forte. Moving up to the next level will probably take me another few years of training- I treat it very seriously. People would actually be shocked if they know what I did (only dh knows)

Just read my own post sorry it said unimaginative oops should be imaginative

tentative3 · 15/12/2020 17:32

It is, of course, also possible to have a side hustle teaching people how to do your side hustle. I follow a couple of youtubers who do this (for OH's side hustle, which I dabble very lightly in). For me personally it's generally more lucrative to just do overtime at work, which is easy to come by. I do a small amount of survey stuff via Prolific, and have done matched betting on and off but kind of gave up on it.

@terfterfterf I’d love to DM you about inventory work, but I’ve no idea how to DM 😳

@lollyblackheart It's the 'message poster' button.

I sent you the details in a private message. You should get an email alert and you can follow the link. It might show you where the messaging bit of Mumsnet is too! Every day's a school day as they say Grin

terfterfterf · 15/12/2020 19:27

@Smallgoon you don't get those options when you use the app. I have to go into MyMumsnet to do messaging.

MAMATOBI · 15/12/2020 19:34

What an interesting thread! So many ideas.

sharond101 · 15/12/2020 19:47

@weehoo

I work almost F/T and also sell on Etsy as a sideline which brings in an extra £2.5k a month

It didn't happen overnight and I've worked extremely hard but now it's paying off

Wow! What do you sell?
fandangofandango · 15/12/2020 19:56

@starlight13 wow, that's great! How on earth are you managing £3k pm on casino?! I don't think I've gone above £1k on one month (which still isn't bad obv haha!)

I'm the same - only DH knows what I do!

greenapples · 15/12/2020 20:47

My side hustle - I paint house names, either straight onto stone or driftwood.

ginandbearit · 15/12/2020 21:25

Translation. Brings in about £20,000 per annum on top of my salary 👍
I have a Spanish and French speaking friend who could do with some extra income would you mind saying who you work for? Unless it's freelance
Smallgoon · 15/12/2020 22:20

I mentioned translation work to my Italian driving instructor today as he has suffered during lockdown with no govt support whatsoever. He said his wife does some translation work but that you needed to have the correct 'paperwork' and be part of a specific body in order to do this. He gave me the impression it was quite pricey to 'qualify'. I thought it was as simple as having fluency in another language, but apparently in this country it isn't...

I've taught evening classes and helped out with the last census. I sold a few books online but made a grand total of £15 for 2 substantial parcels - the main advantage was making room on my shelves. I'm on the BARB tv panel, is one of the households they monitor to work out overall viewing figures. I don't think you can sign up. I randomly agreed to do an unpaid survey and was asked to join the panel. We get vouchers as thanks.

I also signed dd up for a sleep experiment at the local university. She loved it and got a £10 voucher to say thanks. She loved it.

I thought I didn't have a side-hustle but that sounds like a lot! It's just little bits and pieces over the years though.

bibliomania · 15/12/2020 22:40

I sound suspiciously keen to assert DD's enjoyment of being experimented on.

bibliomania · 15/12/2020 22:41

When I say I sold books, I mean books from my shelf, not ones I wrote.

(Must stop rereading my posts after they've been posted).

BettyCrockaShit · 15/12/2020 22:44

Customer focus groups for marketing brands. Loads of opportunities for this in London and online - roughly €75-120 for each session. I try and do two a month.

Chopsing · 15/12/2020 23:12

I rent our small studio annexe out on Airbnb. It's really profitable and earns approx £1 - 1400 per month (net following expenses AND tax). The constant cleaning is really repetitive and boring. I also have another property abroad but that makes about £50 pa net profit Hmm

I'm quite creative and did make items to sell but I found this very time consuming and didn't earn much.

I'm looking for my next side hustle. Unfortunately, I'm very time poor...

Spacerader · 15/12/2020 23:21

Have a small commercial cleaning business on top of my full time job. Its just me and dp. We work when we feel like it. Usually just a weekend or 1 or two nights theiugn the week instead. Can bring in anything between 1-2k a month. Depending on the time of year. We started it just to have a little extra money. I do sometimes consider giving up my real job and making it into a proper buinsness full time but I just don't like cleaning and matienence, so now and again when I feel like it will do.

Hoppinggreen · 16/12/2020 08:00

As well at the candidate assessment I mentioned earlier before Covid I also did a bit of work for a Relocation Agency. Very erratic (and non existent at the moment) but it was £200 per job, which could take a few hours up to a full day which was nice. Hopefully it will pick up again next year.

notafanoftheman · 16/12/2020 08:02

Smallgoon he is wrong, anyone can translate. There is more to it than just speaking another language though. I freelance for museums mostly. Happy to share more by PM.

GoldPaperStars · 16/12/2020 10:47

EatsCheeseAndLeaves Do you mind me asking if you have a large social media following? Was the demand there for your prints and cards first, or did you decide to sell them and then find people to buy your work?
