To ask what is your 'side hustle' and how much do you earn?

I need to preface this with apologising for using the term 'side hustle'. I know it is hated by many Grin

I work part time but over the years I have supplemented my income with various side hustles. Cleaning, buying and selling, cake decorating, etc. Now I tutor and earn about 350 a month extra.

What is your side hustle if you have one and how much do you earn each month from it?

I write erotic romance novellas and sell them on Amazon (and other places). I make a few hundred a month, sometimes over a grand, but I had to write quite a lot of titles to get to that point.

DH and I have a YouTube channel specific to a hobby we share, that also makes a few hundred a month.

I’ve also got a flat that I kind of inherited which I rent out. But that just washes its own face really, I don’t make a profit on it. I intend to move into it at some point.

Bigfatpicnic · 13/12/2020 19:43

So many ideas.
I don’t have a side hussle, but a co worker had loads going on, matched betting, sign ups to companies, surveys, selling clothing on depop (?), buying Easter, Halloween, Xmas tat from China and selling on via FB, eBay etc.

I have a 9-5 where I teach marketing. On the side I have a few clients with food businesses and I run their Facebook/google ads and manage their website/seo/social media. I make around £2000 extra a month from 3 clients - could be more but I'm limited to how many clients I can take on without feeling burnt out and like the worst mum! I used to pay someone to else to do the bits I don't enjoy and find very long but now I just don't offer that service full stop as it was still taking up my time. This fits around me and a lot I can do from my phone. Working for small local businesses means I can be a bit more relaxed with them, they don't need to know the ins and outs, no fancy presentations, they just want to see the results. Working with food businesses also means I get fed well - although I only have one physical meeting a month on a sat or sun.

I'm creating my own digital marketing course for people who want to get into digital marketing as I teach it every day anyway and want to build up my passive income streams.

I started my own Etsy shop selling vintage and antique furniture back in the late summer. I've been so busy that my partner has now come in on it with me. I made £1200 alone in November.

@TerfTerfTerf could you message me more info about the inventory work please

Bookriddle · 14/12/2020 00:03

My brother took up streaming on twitch a few years ago, he has since blown up on there and been signed by a big esports org and is pro in 2 games! Just from subs and donations he is clearing around 10k a month and then add on sponsorship and stuff!

He lets me run his youtube account, and i make stream highlights videos etc, the money he makes from the videos he gives to me, so a few hundred a month!

I run an information based blog. It earns around £1k pcm from adverts and affiliate links. I spend probably 10 hours a week on it now, though in the early days it was more intensive. Now it coasts mostly on historic content.

Sarahandduck18 · 14/12/2020 05:25

I’ve done btl when living with DP.

There were so many extra costs though I can’t say I made much profit.

Refereeing
My officially rate is £15 hour but travelling is only sometimes covered, depending on the level of play. But it's very close to home and I do 2 evenings a week, out for about 3.5 hours for £30.

I tend to earn £60-£90 a week. I could earn double this but that's a lot of my time. Treble if I did a whole weekend day.

I love doing it and sport can't happen without officials.
I'm also very good Grin and quite in demand. I am often asked for my number.

drspouse · 14/12/2020 07:40

Landlady.

binkyblinky · 14/12/2020 07:43

I made some crochet headbands / ear warmer things. Posted them on Facebook and got £150 worth of orders for them! Not exactly a hussle but not bad money and I love making them!

Smallsteps88 · 14/12/2020 12:42

@binkyblinky but how much profit did you make out of the £150 after taking out your time and materials?

binkyblinky · 14/12/2020 12:45

@Smallsteps88 about £140! I already had the yarn. I won't count my time as I have bad depression and i find crochet incredibly helpful for mindfulness! X

Smallsteps88 · 14/12/2020 13:06

Oh ok. Realistically you’re not making much, if any profit with crochet once you’ve accounted for time and materials so I wouldn’t consider it a side hustle tbh. It’s good for passing time though and if you can cover your costs that’s all good.

drspouse · 14/12/2020 13:13

The trouble with not covering costs is that it devalues your time and everyone else's. I know many crafters who sell get very unrealistic comments from potential customers who say "but you'd be doing it anyway, why isn't it cheaper than factory made if you are doing it at home"

Littlemissadequate · 14/12/2020 13:17

F

Bridecilla · 14/12/2020 13:24

Us crafters tend to 'work' in our downtime, whilst watching TV etc. I couldn't gwt paid from my normal job at 9pm at night whilst watching a box set

I think it is a side hustle if she's making money, what else would you call it? £140 is lota to lots of people and there's only so much you can crochet for yourself!

Also - something that brings calmness is priceless at the moment

Schehezarade · 14/12/2020 13:24

I hope everyone is declaring their extra income for tax where appropriate

Oh, for goodness' sake.So boring ....

Airbnb ers got nailed for tax recently, their info was made available to HMRC - I believe they can go back 20 years if they want!
In these straitened times I would make sure I pay all tax due.

drspouse · 14/12/2020 13:29

Don't forget if you take your materials off tax, it has to look like a genuine business, not a way to buy your own craft materials and make £2/hour.

We are making a bit of money currently from our rental flat, but if we said "oh, we have a holiday flat, let's try and get some expenses back" I think we might get in a bit of trouble too.

binkyblinky · 14/12/2020 14:12

@Smallsteps88 no, not much, but I love doing it and it keeps my mind free of dark thoughts. Which can only be a good thing c

Absolutely! I’m with you on that one. I’m just saying that for the purposes of this thread I don’t think it qualifies as a side hustle.

Bridecilla · 14/12/2020 14:20

Why not @small? She's got £140 that she didn't have before and the potential for return buyers. Is there a minimum hussle allowed on this thread that we weren't informed of?

Smallsteps88 · 14/12/2020 15:20
Hmm

Ok it’s a side hustle.
