To ask what is your 'side hustle' and how much do you earn?

I need to preface this with apologising for using the term 'side hustle'. I know it is hated by many Grin

I work part time but over the years I have supplemented my income with various side hustles. Cleaning, buying and selling, cake decorating, etc. Now I tutor and earn about 350 a month extra.

What is your side hustle if you have one and how much do you earn each month from it?

wildchild554 · 14/12/2020 17:32

doing surveys on different sites and focus groups etc on various sites, average about £400 a month.

riceuten · 14/12/2020 17:38

I clerk school governing bodies. It's about £15 an hour (or NJC local government scale SO2, if you know what that means !), in addition to my full time job, mainly because the clerking is in the evening

EatsCheeseAndLeaves · 14/12/2020 17:38

I sell prints and greetings cards from photos I create for my Instagram account. I started doing that in July and take around £500 a month but there are lots of initial outgoings so it probably works out more like £250/300, I suspect. Nice to have a ‘side hustle’ (yuk) that fits in with being a working single mum (I do it to be creative and to keep sane!)

tectonicplates · 14/12/2020 17:43

@EatsCheeseAndLeaves Have your sales been even throughout the year, or have you sold a lot more during December?

Yorkshiretolondon · 14/12/2020 17:45

Main hustle teacher ‘side’ hustle Childrens activity clubs, parties..... moving more into PT and tutoring that don’t take up my holidays!

SinkGirl · 14/12/2020 17:47

I design templates for a specific craft which I sell on Etsy. They’re auto downloads so once they’re done and uploaded I don’t have to do much.

Don’t sell many these days as haven’t had time or touched my shop in about four years. Now my twins have started school I’m working on some new ones, and some crochet and knitting patterns / kits. Hoping to get up to £400-800 a month to help save for a new house. Could exceed that if I spend more time on it, but time is the main thing I don’t have much of!

FelicisNox · 14/12/2020 17:48

Selling on clothes and accessories apps such as ebay/Vinted/Depop. Lots of people (including me) have had a massive clear out and I said I would sell whatever they didn't want and split the proceeds.

Nice little earner, nothing amazing but at least £200 per month.

@tectonicplates Since launching in July, the only quiet month has been September (a friend warned me this might be the case), and November and December have been good, as you might expect.

But as it’s my first year AND it’s 2020, I’m not sure what to make of any of it 😂

Zeewest · 14/12/2020 17:49

1 Exam invigilating at 2 of my local secondary schools 2 Canvassing annually for the Electoral Register that leads to delivering polling cards/opening postal votes/working at polling station/vote counting.

riceuten · 14/12/2020 17:54

@Lollipity

I used to tutor and would make about £450 per month from that. I also worked in summer camps offering a niche activity, and would make £200 a day. Exam marking - although it was extremely boring and very time-consuming.

Now I let my house and after management fees make just over £1500 per month.

I had no idea about this until I googled and read this

JanetSnakeholeMacklin · 14/12/2020 17:56

I sell cheeseboards/grazing platters, traybakes etc. I make about £500 per month. I could make more if I wanted I think, but it's hard work and pretty boring.

Gonna go back and read this thread for ideas!

Wooliesgal · 14/12/2020 17:57

Duty manager at a local private school who hire out their sports hall and swimming pool to various local clubs and teams. Hubby and I split shifts between us and earn between 600-1000pm depending how many hrs are available (typically 30hrs pw)

BigBaublesGalore · 14/12/2020 17:57

3-8k per month website. I've worked hard but I feel very lucky

notalwaysalondoner · 14/12/2020 18:00

Have a lodger. £850pcm. Always amazed more people don’t do it - especially as we’ve never had to take a stranger and our current lodger is practically like a sister now.

A relative does YouTube and online courses and after a couple of years is earning about £1000pcm

bloodynamechangethe3rd · 14/12/2020 18:08

When people ask me what I do I say that I'm an accountant... 🍆 💦 💦

donna2512 · 14/12/2020 18:09

I work 16 hours a week in a primary school but to supplement my income I work for an estate agents 2-3 Saturdays/month showing houses and earn between £230-£350/month + mileage expenses.
The agency I work for pay well as a friend of mine did same with another agency and doesn't get same hourly rate so luck of draw x

MummyToOrla · 14/12/2020 18:11

I wish I had time for side hustle!
Full time primary school teacher in the UK about to return to work after ftm maternity leave 😭. I average about 60 hours a week most of the year -and still end up tinkering around in the school holidays and at weekends. Am desperately trying to work out how to keep my standard of teaching up while making time for my baby girl.

notafanoftheman · 14/12/2020 18:15

Translation. Brings in about £20,000 per annum on top of my salary 👍

spababe · 14/12/2020 18:20

Over the years: matched betting but got gubbed
Competitions - very successful but comps have significantly dwindled after the GDPR changes
Now I do Amazon Merch and KDP which is basically print on demand t shirts and low content books.
I sell internationally, make very good money and yes I have a company and pay taxes.
It's technically passive income but it isn't really because you need to keep creating new things and keep up with trends and promote your stuff. Having said that, I can work when I want for as much or as little time as I want. You get back what you put in. However, it's Amazon's gig and the rules can change at any time.
I do sell a bit on Redbubble as well but the amount in from other print on demand sites doesn't justify the work in my opinion. I'm better off doing the work on Amazon.

keffie12 · 14/12/2020 18:24

Surveys and comper! Compers means I enter competitions. Surveys are self explanatory. I also use topcashback which probably brings another £100 plus a year in.

Re comping: I'm a member of a large comping community. Not guaranteed. It can be hard work.

Done it on/off all my life up to 2012 when I had a very large win of supermarket vouchers. With www I then went searching for it as a hobby.

You've got to love it do it. Don't win as much as used too as alot are just form filling and draws.

Very few effort based now. Plus alot more are doing them. They dont stick around but there is always someone to take there place.

I've won some cracking prizes over the years including holidays

Insanelysilver · 14/12/2020 18:33

Can I ask if you make the clothes that you sell or if you go buy it wholesale?

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 14/12/2020 18:34

Copywriting and web design, varies depending on how much work i choose to take on, on top of my day job, generally around 500 extra a month if I can be arsed

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 14/12/2020 18:36

And just started making my own range of cannabalms, so another 50 pm at the mo, but I just started 2 weeks ago

KisstheTeapot14 · 14/12/2020 18:37

Let out a flat, nothing spectacular but it covers the mortgage on the flat and the one we live in.

In time, it may be a place DS can live, he has quite a lot of SEN so may come in handy for some low cost independence after he leaves school/college etc.

Can be time consuming though, as we help manage the (Victorian) building as a whole with other owners and there are always things to do like getting people in for drains/guttering etc etc. There is at least one owner who do nowt and takes rental profits.
