Indian takeaway on Christmas day

WhyDoYouAsk · 09/12/2020 16:29

Do any of you do this? Or have ideas for alternative Christmas Day dinners?
AIBU to say I’m not cooking this year?

OP posts:
PhatPhanny · 09/12/2020 16:31

Not for me, but eat what you like

raspberryk · 09/12/2020 16:31

I would love that!

PurpleDaisies · 09/12/2020 16:32

The only thing you need to check is that it’s open.

Go for it!

cherrybunx0 · 09/12/2020 16:32

my MIL and her partner go out for an Indian almost every year. it's her favourite food and she doesnt have to wash up - her words!

good for her I say.

TheHobbitMum · 09/12/2020 16:32

We've done it before and it was fantastic, I'd happily do it again OP. Go for it!

dudsville · 09/12/2020 16:32

It's a great idea! Alternatives would include frozen stuff you just put in the oven on the day. Wider variety, you could have it whenever you want.

ComDummings · 09/12/2020 16:33

I am so tempted this year.

UnChristmassy · 09/12/2020 16:34

Me and my Dad (lived with him growing up) used to go to our local Indian restaurant on Christmas day ☺️ I loved it.

I'd do it now if DH would but he's a strict Christmas dinner kinda person.

Bloodyfrostycar · 09/12/2020 16:35

I would love to! But we always host MIL as she has no other close relatives and she would probably explode at the suggestion.

[Now contemplating how much grief I would get if we all had an Indian Takeaway and bought/pre-made a small roast dinner for MIL]

BrumBoo · 09/12/2020 16:35

I'd love to but even though I assume they're open because they don't celebrate Christmas, I'd still feel bad making anyone work on the day itself.

I've gone on Christmas day cooking strike. However, I do still make the meal, I just offer Xmas Eve or Boxing Day, and just shove party food in the oven on the day itself (everyone's too full on chocolate anyway!). Why the heck should one person be running around the kitchen like a headless turkey whilst everyone else is enjoying the day?

Spongebobsquarefringe · 09/12/2020 16:36

Love it, I’ve had Indian, Chinese, Nandos, kebab, pizza.my dad done a bbq one year

PurpleDaisies · 09/12/2020 16:36

If they’re open anyway, they’ll want the business.

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/12/2020 16:37

I've had Chinese takeaway before and may well do this year.
If not, it'll be cheese, pate, salad, pickles etc.
I'm on my own so have whatever I want.

Ginisatonic · 09/12/2020 16:40

We’ve done this a few times and considering it again this year. I’ve had some years when I’ve spent far too much time in the kitchen on Christmas Day when I’d rather just have been enjoying the day.

GiraffeNecked · 09/12/2020 16:40

I've suggested this - but it's gone down like a lead balloon. Partly to be fair as the local takeaways that are open on Christmas day aren't very good.....

Shame - I'd love it.

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/12/2020 16:41

@BrumBoo
My local corner shop is open everyday of the year.
I asked them about it last year and they said they are happy to work and actually are very busy on Christmas day.
Mainly people needing batteries/crisps/fizzy juice/more alcohol and a lot of regular customers who pop in for a chat as they are alone.

caperplips · 09/12/2020 16:42

I would never have that, but that's because I don't like Indian food particularly.
And also I associate Christmas with certain foods and I enjoy cooking them and eating them even more so!

We have a really nice local Chinese restaurant and we're going there for dinner at 6pm on Christmas Eve so we sort of get the best of both worlds.

I would definitely not like reheated takeaway from the day before for my Christmas dinner. But if you think you would like to try it I say go for it!

OneForMeToo · 09/12/2020 16:44

I’d love to and I will one year but for now it’s turkey

wolfmom · 09/12/2020 16:44

OH is cooking this year, but, an Indian takeaway sounds heavenly

Simplyunacceptable · 09/12/2020 16:44

My Mum and her partner do this every year now. She says she’s had her years cooking Christmas dinner, it’s now time for her to relax and let someone else do the cooking Grin. Don’t blame them really, I’ll probably do the same when my DC leave the nest.

Longdistance · 09/12/2020 16:45

My dps are not British and we used to have our Christmas dinner on the 24th. We’d have egg, chips and beans on Christmas Day.

pickingdaisies · 09/12/2020 16:46

I'd love it, but it wouldn't go down well here. So when I don't want to cook much, I get all that pre-prepped stuff - turkey crown, roasties, ready made gravy, red cabbage, everything. Just have to bung it all in the oven. M&S if feeling flush, Aldi otherwise.

emmathedilemma · 09/12/2020 16:48

I know someone who always gets takeaway on Xmas Day so they can focus on playing with the kids, then they do a roast dinner later in the week.

Theluggagerules · 09/12/2020 16:48

Yup I've done this, was lush

Elieza · 09/12/2020 16:49

I have a takeaway every year. Why not. As long as those you dine with also like it go for it. You can always do turkey another day. Or next year. Life’s too short do whatever tge he’ll you want Grin
