Do any of you do this? Or have ideas for alternative Christmas Day dinners?
AIBU to say I’m not cooking this year?

I don’t! If we go to someone else’s house they cook! If I am at my house I cook. This year the Indian restaurant will cook! 🤣

Ah ok! I thought you are getting lumbered with the cooking every year! Smile

polexiaaphrodesia · 10/12/2020 07:02

PIL do this but have form for getting the takeaway the night before and leaving on the side in the kitchen then reheating on Christmas day. DH had horrendous food poisoning one year as a result so I always refuse to have it but mainly on food hygiene grounds.

userxx · 10/12/2020 07:19

@polexiaaphrodesia I've no issues with heating up a takeaway the next day but not for my Christmas dinner.

Member212711 · 10/12/2020 17:37

Do it! I did one year and it was wonderful! It included curried sprouts in a nod to Christmas.

Sussexbonfireviking · 10/12/2020 17:41

We do this, collect night before (that's my job) and the cool off in the 'shed' and then re heat on Xmas day!!

isawthat · 10/12/2020 17:43

I sometimes do this for Christmas Eve, but go for it!

Dadtimes3 · 10/12/2020 17:46

I’ve chatted to the guy (Daniel) in my local Chinese about this - one of their busiest days of the year. Very popular (in Edinburgh anyway.

Yespresh · 10/12/2020 17:52

My Mum is 89 and never eaten an Indian meal. She hasnt lived.

Gobbycop · 10/12/2020 17:54

Defo, sound idea.

Or fire up the BBQ aa.

exaltedwombat · 10/12/2020 17:54

I believe Chinese takeaway is a New York Jewish Christmas thing.

Annie2245 · 10/12/2020 18:09

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have a takeaway on Christmas Day , although I do like a good roast dinner a couple of our local pubs have started to do delivery on carvery all in a massive foil tray with a separate pot of gravy I’ve no idea if they do this Christmas Day though, they must have time off at some point.
I think Indian and Chinese takeaways have missed a trick not serving turkey/ turkey curry though

YanTanTethera01 · 10/12/2020 18:34

We're not going out but are making Thai/Chinese food this year. Brisket in sticky hoi sin, pork belly, chicken satay, dim sum, dumplings, spiced vermicelli, pad thai.

Last year we had lobster in a cream sauce with tagliatelle.

Will prepare it all the day and finish off on the day. Can't wait!

Charleyhorses · 10/12/2020 18:37

Our fav Indian is open for Xmas day.
I would bloody love it.

bellocchild · 10/12/2020 18:59

We go to the local pub....it is mega-expensive but we eat what we like - not turkey!- and enjoy a family excursion. Indian takeaway would be lovely, but not seasonal...

RachandO · 10/12/2020 18:59

I love this! It's just myself and my DS who's twelve years old at home. I'm vegetarian, he's not. I will cook all the trimmings but he's not a fan of a roast and doesn't like vegetables. So we had a chat today and decided to have an Indian take away! I'll get it delivered the day before and cook the rice myself. We're both thrilled with our decision Grin

Franacropan1 · 10/12/2020 19:13

We would love it but we always cook for housebound MiL and take it round and eat with her and it has to be traditional. One year I cooked us a separate meal, Moroccan chicken and did the traditional for her. You'd think I'd served up unicorn feet or something, she still goes on about it now, and it's not as if she even tasted any but to hear her tell it she was on an episode of I'm a Celebrity.

EternalOptimist7 · 10/12/2020 19:17

I would say whatever floats your boat OP! I love Indian but it wouldn’t feel right on Christmas Day. Can’t wait for turkey with all the trimmings.

Hm2020 · 10/12/2020 19:20

My aunt and cousin do this every year they order Christmas Eve they’re both not big on roasts and it’s just them as she’s a single parent I’ve always been jealous do it op

Notenoughchocolateomg · 10/12/2020 19:48

I've done this before, when it was just myself and my mum. Now I have small children who don't yet appreciate how amazing Indian food is! Loved it that year as I do hate cooking.

cyclecamper · 10/12/2020 19:49

We used to cycle up to Edgeware Road and have Lebanese food in a restaurant there on Christmas day. Sadly, we no longer live in London, or I would definitely do that again, it was brilliant! I like the idea of an Indian takeaway though, I would certainly do that. Some years we have had egg and chips for Christmas Lunch, which is fab too. No messing about, the child will eat it and we can all do something more fun that sitting at the table for hours.

Parker231 · 10/12/2020 19:53

One of the best Christmas Day meals we had was whilst on holiday in Australia. We sat on the beach having a picnic of sandwiches and salads. It was perfect. Am not really a big fan of roasts (or anything which takes hours to prepare and cook) so an Indian takeaway sounds great.

CrunchyNutNC · 10/12/2020 19:54

I would love to do this actually.

This year we've compromised and will do big dinner on christmas even, and help yourself to leftovers and sausage rolls on christmas day. Looking forward to not cooking on the day itself. Good chance I'll be bored in 25th though without things to do in the kitchen!
