Indian takeaway on Christmas day

WhyDoYouAsk · 09/12/2020 16:29

Do any of you do this? Or have ideas for alternative Christmas Day dinners?
AIBU to say I’m not cooking this year?

Not me. I love a traditional Christmas dinner.

Aprilx · 09/12/2020 16:51

Not for us, but if you are all up for it then why not.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 09/12/2020 16:53

My friend used to get McDonald’s Xmas day . I never believed her as I doubt they’d be open , this was probably about 10 years ago , she swore blind the one near hers was open for breakfast

TizzDeSeason · 09/12/2020 16:53

Yes, we’ve done it a few times over the years. Goes down a treat!

MeeshW · 09/12/2020 16:53

Yuck

MiddlesexGirl · 09/12/2020 16:57

I like cooking and I love Christmas Dinner.
I can have takeaway any day of the year so it wouldn't seem very special.
But if it suits you and any family/friends with you then of course go for it.

TizzDeSeason · 09/12/2020 16:58

How rude!

WhyDoYouAsk · 09/12/2020 17:00

It’s very tempting!!
Just a few replies to start with:
I would definitely not like reheated takeaway from the day before for my Christmas dinner. But if you think you would like to try it I say go for it!
It would be bought on the day! Cooked fresh, not reheated!

They ARE open in some locations! Not all though!

Yuck Hmm

I get it might not be for you, but yuck, really?

LegallyBlondeee · 09/12/2020 17:00

Suggestion just in case your local favourite takeout is closed. Order it Xmas Eve and then just warm it up when you’re ready Xmas day! I am not cooking Christmas dinner this year either OP! DD hates it as does DH and I really cannot be bothered! So we’re having a buffet!
But... we are having Indian take out Christmas Eve

Ohdoleavemealone · 09/12/2020 17:02

We did it once, from costco though not takeaway. It was great.

UnChristmassy · 09/12/2020 17:03

Also second the buffet thing if your family isn't keen on the takeaway idea.

Always used to have buffet at my mum's with party food etc... Was lovely too!

I know what you mean but we have Roast chicken with all the extras (stuffing, roast parsnips, cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, mini sausages etc) for Sunday lunch throughout the year! Indian food would be a treat for us!
I’m going to suggest it!

I so wanted to this year but they are closed Sad - so it’ll be a Christmas Eve curry instead

WhyDoYouAsk · 09/12/2020 17:05

Thanks for all the replies!!
Mixed opinion overall but lots of positive ones amongst them! 😊 🍛 😋

Curry is usually better the next day. There’s nothing wrong with reheating an Indian take away.

Jent13c · 09/12/2020 17:08

We did it the year my son was born and it was probably my fave Christmas so far. Well Chinese rather than Indian.

Doing it this year as we are just us on Christmas day. We have a full roast weekly and none of us are particularly attached to Turkey so we are having chinese in our pjs and the kids are having turkey dinosaurs. We will buy in or make a Christmas dessert and lots of chocolate.

Thehollyandtheirony · 09/12/2020 17:10

Sounds good to me!
We are having a big roast dinner but will definitely go to our favourite Indian and Thai restaurants or get take away in the following days.

Kokosrieksts · 09/12/2020 17:10

We did this last year and it was perfect. We ordered the night before to save stress on Christmas Day.

Nerve · 09/12/2020 17:12

We are doing it this year! I'm so excited. We always cook roast dinners so it's not like xmas dinner is special in anyway and I hate doing things just because it's tradition or proper. An Indian takeaway is going to be a real treat! We're going to the posh one we typically can't afford.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/12/2020 17:12

@PurpleDaisies

I'd love to but even though I assume they're open because they don't celebrate Christmas, I'd still feel bad making anyone work on the day itself.

If they’re open anyway, they’ll want the business.

If it's a family business, yes, if they have employees it's a bit more complicated. If you give them a lot of business on Christmas Day you're encouraging them to be open next year. I once went to the shops on New Year's Day, only because I was in town anyway and I had time to kill. The staff behind the counter were complaining about having to work so I decided not to do it again.
Hoppinggreen · 09/12/2020 17:12

We go out for a curry every xmas Day, we have your usual booking this year and they have said if they can’t open we can have a takeaway instead (Tier3)

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/12/2020 17:13

Mmmm yum. Sounds like a great idea. I just checked and our local very good Indian isn’t open on Christmas Day, so I can’t join you unfortunately.

GameSetMatch · 09/12/2020 17:14

I wanted to do this but my husband used his veto on the idea! I’d love it, a lot less messing too.

HamishDent · 09/12/2020 17:14

Sound great! I’ve always thought minimising time in the kitchen is a good and I love Indian takeaway.

We usually have it fairly easy on Christmas Day as my MIL always cooks (she enjoys it apparently!) and we just have to help out with the table laying and clean up. Unfortunately the children have been spoilt over the years and won’t even contemplate Christmas at home.
