Indian takeaway on Christmas day

Do any of you do this? Or have ideas for alternative Christmas Day dinners?
AIBU to say I’m not cooking this year?

I prefer Indian food to traditional Christmasdinner by about 20 times, so this is a great idea. I'm going to try to convince my family!

Parker231 · 09/12/2020 17:19

Some friends do it each year - a different takeaway each year. They joke that they are working their way around the world. I think they are having Thai this year. They usually (pre Covid) have three generations of their families for the meal and is very popular as no one wants to spend any time cooking. We’re having Christmas dinner from Cook so minimal work involved.

nosswith · 09/12/2020 17:22

The only objection I have to the idea is that the place doing the takeaway is open on Christmas Day.

Let's have one day a year where as many people as possible can have time off work.

Why? Surely that’s their decision. This year lots of businesses are desperate for the extra cash.

Stupid comment re takeaway being closed so workers are off.

You do realise that most don't actually celebrate xmas anyway?

Benjispruce2 · 09/12/2020 17:28

I wouldn’t because Christmas dinner is the best but for me. I enjoy cooking and eating it. But if you don’t then go for it!

Benjispruce2 · 09/12/2020 17:29

Best bit

allfurcoatnoknickers · 09/12/2020 17:30

DH is Jewish, so we've done the traditional Jewish Christmas which is a Chinese and a trip to the cinema. No regrets, it was great fun and very low effort.

Levatrice · 09/12/2020 17:30

I would looooove to do this! Do it and update us on Xmas day!

LaBodDelMed · 09/12/2020 17:30

This is a great idea!
I’m very tempted.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 09/12/2020 17:31

My uncle would do this! We would have the big xmas dinner and he would being the Indian takeaway with all the favourites and it would all go on the table. It was amazing!

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 09/12/2020 17:31

I wish!

user686833 · 09/12/2020 17:32

I used to think this was sacrilegious, but usually we go to family for Christmas dinner and bring a dish, and the idea of cooking it all ourselves this year with kids wanting attention isn't appealing, and like you, we tend to add the extras to a usual roast very often, whereas we only get takeaway a couple of times a year, usually birthdays. So Indian actually seems more exciting than a Christmas dinner to me right now. We've already said we aren't really bothered about turkey so wondering if we should just get chicken rather than pay more for such similar poultry, but then we have that too often. Beef and pork is hit or miss, so we've been toying with lamb, but Indian is seeming like a better idea altogether.

HeadNorth · 09/12/2020 17:32

We did it one year, when we were so freshly and horrifically bereaved it was a way to get through xmas. So you can get an Indian takeaway on xmas day, any why not if that is the food you like.

Beketaten · 09/12/2020 17:34

I'd love this, but then I'm vegetarian, so I don't eat the traditional turkey meal anyway.

MrsExpo · 09/12/2020 17:34

Curry for us (from M&S) ..... we hate turkey anyway, so might as well have what we enjoy. Smile

ifonly4 · 09/12/2020 17:34

If it's something you'd enjoy, go for it. I'd much rather have a curry than a roast dinner, but I'm outnumbered here.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 09/12/2020 17:36

I would love this but I love xmas dinner. My son doesn't really like roast so is having pizza xmas day 😂 with a year like this, why not.

merrygoround51 · 09/12/2020 17:36

I wouldn’t fancy this at home but quite like the idea of going out to a local restaurant

Heyahun · 09/12/2020 17:37

My husband is going to make 3 different Indian curries Christmas Eve and we will have plenty left for Christmas Day dinner 🤭

I’m very excited to not be having turkey for once !!

Didn’t even think about the possibility of ordering in though - good idea if you can get something delivered locally

prawntoastie · 09/12/2020 17:38

exactly what I will be doing as I will be alone

Hardbackwriter · 09/12/2020 17:44

Me too - I think a roast is a really boring meal, and don't really understand why it is so popular, but it is with the rest of my house!
Treaclepie19 · 09/12/2020 17:44

I'm tempted to do the same!
Only thing that puts me off is our 5yo wouldn't eat it whereas he loves a roast dinner.

Nonamesavail · 09/12/2020 17:46

I'm going to see if ours is open

SugarCoatIt · 09/12/2020 17:46

Sounds amazing!

I never realised takeaways on Christmas Day were a “thing” until my hairdresser mentioned she was having a Chinese.
