Do any of you do this? Or have ideas for alternative Christmas Day dinners?
AIBU to say I’m not cooking this year?

Sounds great . Some of the local pubs around here are doing takeaway Christmas lunch too.

Seriously1996 · 10/12/2020 20:18

We have booked the local Toby for our Christmas Day dinner . We have been for the last few years and have a wonderful time whilst eating a delicious Christmas dinner

Lovely13 · 10/12/2020 20:50

Sounds perfect. I have in the past said to kids what do you want to eat Xmas day? We have done pizza, lamb chops etc. Now they are adults and want all the traditional stuff. But really only interested in pigs in blankets and my homemade stuffing!

Ravenesque · 10/12/2020 21:04

My friends, the Snoops have done this for a few years now. Often get it on Christmas Eve and heat it up the next day. I'd rather go full Jewish American and have Chinese food or find true heaven in some Thai food, but I think this is a great idea for anyone who wants it. Christmas food is whatever you want and whatever makes you happy.

PortalooSunset · 10/12/2020 22:07

We have 'party food' - you know, the boxes of frozen snacky bits. Just shovel trays into the oven as and when we feel hungry. Much more relaxed than trying to get a big meal done on time. I'm working this year though so hoping there will be some left!

Having said that we only do it when it's the 4 of us, if we go to my folks then the cooking is a sociable part of the day and most of us congregate in the kitchen at various points.

Sounds like you've decided op, and I think if I wasn't working until late in the evening then I might have suggested the same. It's a treat for us too!

pilates · 10/12/2020 22:13

No not for me. I love a traditional Christmas dinner.

BengalGal · 10/12/2020 22:50

It’s super common in New York City to have Chinese take away on Christmas if you are Jewish. It’s practically a tradition now.

Celestine70 · 11/12/2020 00:35

Yes why not?

Mamanyt · 11/12/2020 01:30

Whatever you and your family want to do on Christmas is not unreasonable at all! One year, my boys asked for tacos for Christmas dinner. When I asked if they were sure, my younger informed me, "Mom, the shells are gold, the lettuce is green, the salsa is red, and the sour cream is white! It's VERY seasonal!" I thought, "He's right..." and fixed Christmas dinner in 30 minutes flat. Enjoyed EVERY SINGLE BITE!

IFuckLobstersForMoney · 11/12/2020 01:35

We had Chinese last year. It was amazing. No cooking, minimal mess and I got to celebrate the birth of Jesus with salt and pepper squid and chicken satay. Perfection. Definitely do it with the takeaway of your choice @WhyDoYouAsk. No way we’ll go back now, it was our best Christmas dinner ever.

ladybird69 · 11/12/2020 01:41

Had Indian for the past 9 years. Having Christmas dinner this year for a change! Still not cooking though, having it delivered from local restaurant. £12 for 3 courses!

BubblyBarbara · 11/12/2020 01:43

Takeaways are great but you can have them any day of the year and they taste the same! Don’t waste Christmas by missing out on Turkey and all the Trimmings

FancySomeChips · 11/12/2020 01:49

Do this every year- no cooking, no clearing up, everyone orders what they want and we get leftovers on Boxing Day.
Love it.
It’s the future.

WhyDoYouAsk · 11/12/2020 06:55

ladybird
£12 for 3 courses is very cheap...

You can have a Turkey dinner any day of the year so choose your favourite meal and have that. Huge advantage of a takeaway is no time spent in the kitchen and no cleaning up afterwards.

Thehop · 11/12/2020 08:04

We have a carvery Christmas Eve then sausages and mash on Christmas Day. Kids love it, we’re not stuck cooking and can eat chocolates and play with the dc. Works great for us.

urkidding · 11/12/2020 08:27

What a great idea! All this pressure of having fancy decorations, crafting, making your own perfect food of course, is mainly for women, and created by the media and people earning large sums of money from it, and may be loved by some of us and at certain times in our life. So let's enjoy the freedom, and multi culturaism!!

OfTheNight · 11/12/2020 08:52

We’re having a takeaway from our favourite Indian restaurant on Christmas Day this year. We’ve never done it before. I’m so looking forward to it. DP, however, is still doing Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve. We reworked it because ds is with his dad Christmas Day.

Don't waste Christmas by being a slave to the kitchen!!

A lot of people have roasts every week which is all Christmas dinner essentially is with a few additions.

Yes, this, plus for many people part of the appeal is the not having to cook/clear up.

RubyRedBerry · 11/12/2020 10:46

Years ago my dad made us an Indian feast for Christmas dinner, it was the great! Still remember it years later. made a nice change from turkey.

Brainwave89 · 11/12/2020 11:27

Sounds like a great idea... there is a reason we only eat Turkey once a year... it is a pretty awful meat devoid of any real taste. A curry sounds much nicer. Particularly if you push the boat out a bit and have all the starters as well.

Geekster1963 · 11/12/2020 11:32

I would love an Indian takeaway for Christmas dinner. DH cooks Christmas dinner and it’s not even I don’t want to cook it I just don’t really like it much, he spends all day cooking it then I wash up. We have his parents round three years out of four and they love their Christmas dinner so no chance of having anything else.

Me and DD would like pizza for Christmas dinner would be a lot easier!

MsMiaWallace · 11/12/2020 11:42

We're having Indian takeaway this year!
It's our favourite so why not!

Last year we went out to a Indian buffet style restaurant which was amazing on Christmas Day!!

Do it!
