Indian takeaway on Christmas day

Do any of you do this? Or have ideas for alternative Christmas Day dinners?
AIBU to say I’m not cooking this year?

We are doing this, Christmas Eve then the other half Christmas Day.

tinselfest · 09/12/2020 17:49

Christmas Day meal already planned, but I think I know what we will be having on Boxing Day now!

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 09/12/2020 17:52

I love Xmas dinner but I always go to my mums and she goes all out, three different homemade stuffings, that pain in the arse Jamie Oliver gravy etc so if I couldn’t go to her then I’d have gotten an Indian too as any attempt at the traditional fare would pale in comparison to hers.

The lovely owners of our local Indian are devout Sikhs and would much rather be open on Christmas as they take a few days off a year for important celebrations in their religion.

TillyTopper · 09/12/2020 17:53

Go for it - but check it's open. Personally I prefer a turkey roast and enjoy the cooking but do whatever makes you happy!

CoronaIsWatching · 09/12/2020 17:54

You can eat what you want it doesn't make you unreasonable. You probably eat Indian regularly throughout the year though so I don't see what's special about it.

I'd rather have a pic nic-ey tea

Will you/ do you have to order ahead? Collect or have it delivered?
I’m not sure how it works!
It sounds good to me!

I would get take away on Christmas if any was open near me absolutely! Cooking on Christmas Day can be quite time consuming!

I asked if it was unreasonable to say I wasn’t going to cook this year.
I know I can eat what I want.
I also said upthread that a takeaway is a treat & a roast is not.

My parents do this with most of my family. I prefer traditional but the love it

WhyDoYouAsk · 09/12/2020 17:59

Tilly
I’m going to check this weekend! I have a few options which is good!

We usually only get Christmas day off so I'm not wasting it cooking!
We usually have frozen pizza and garlic bread. And dd puts it in the oven for us!

PerdidathePostwoman · 09/12/2020 18:01

Yum!
What will you order?

pallisers · 09/12/2020 18:01

We are having chinese takeout this year. I've often threatened to do it but this year is so different anyway, we decided to go for it

I already made a big turkey roast with all the sides for Thanksgiving and I regularly make a roast dinner or have roast potatoes or cauliflower cheese or stuffing with various dinners so we aren't missing anything. We will still decorate the table. I am so looking forward to the day not revolving around the oven.

Raffie13 · 09/12/2020 18:02

Yes! We usually go out for an Indian but as we are tier 3 we may be getting it as a takeaway.

Will obviously still have a table set out nicely etc. But none of us want to cook! Why not :)

Chocolateandamaretto · 09/12/2020 18:05

My family often has Chinese on Christmas Eve - I’d totally be on board with having takeaway on Xmas day tbh! Can’t be arsed with a roast.

WhyDoYouAsk · 09/12/2020 18:06

I'd love to but even though I assume they're open because they don't celebrate Christmas, I'd still feel bad making anyone work on the day itself.
It’s a normal working day I imagine. They would probably prefer to take a holiday on a day that suits them. Also, I’ve just looked at a few menus, much more expensive on Christmas Day so there is a profit to be made! I’m willing to pay! No shopping, no cooking!!

PurpleDaisies · 09/12/2020 18:07

They’re going to open anyway. It would be worse to be there all day with no orders.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 09/12/2020 18:07

I have to starve myself to enjoy Christmas Dinner as roasts are my least favourite meal - I would just love to do this but my DM would never go for it.

BiBabbles · 09/12/2020 18:09

Go for it. We always have takeaway on the 25th. There are always a few dozen places open near me, but it will depend on location. We just order on the day.

DishingOutDone · 09/12/2020 18:10

I don't think any will be open where I live but I wish they were. looks wistful

Womencanlift · 09/12/2020 18:11

In the past we have went out for Chinese. One year we sat near the kitchen and couldn’t believe the number of takeaways coming out of there during the time we were in

HugeBowlofChips · 09/12/2020 18:11

Last year we had microwave curry from M&S. This year we are having some oven-ready salmon thing with rice, at my daughter's request. We don't like Christmas food.

My DB and BIL had one year when they flew home from a holiday on Christmas eve, it was early hours of Christmas day by the time they got home. They had planned to have the day alone, coming to us on boxing day. They had bought a mountain of canapés and "party food", they spent the day putting the next set in the oven and eating it all, watching Christmas telly and recovering from jet lag.

It sounded perfect!

Hmmm! It’s ages since we had an Indian meal... My favourites are VERY boring!
Poppadoms & chutney tray
Chicken Pakora
Onion Bhaji
Vegetable Balti
Chicken shashlick
Chicken tikka masala
Vegetable pilau rice
Garlic Nan 😋❤️
