Kept your jobs on the same hour or even done better out of coronavirus?
DP has but I know many who have lost jobs or had hours reduced.

Recycledblonde · 06/12/2020 22:23

I’m frontline nhs so have virtually no chance of loosing my job, we are definitely not as busy as this time last year though, nor have we been at any time since March. DH has carried on as normal but he works from home a lot normally. DD is a nurse so carrying on as normal although not as busy as pre COVID. DS2 is in logistics and is manically busy, DS1 works as a manager in theatre/cinema world so my worries are all about his job.

KittenCalledBob · 06/12/2020 22:25

DH works in insurance, he has been wfh on normal salary since March. I’m a university lecturer, this term I’ve been teaching partly online and partly face-to-face. No change in salary and I’ve been busier than usual.

honeylulu · 06/12/2020 22:34

Lawyer. Same job and no salary drop though the firm has made lots of redundancies. However, no bonus or pay rise (these were due in 1 April and performance related so I was due to be quids in - had exceeded all my targets, but they were all cancelled). I'm expecting a similar approach on 1 April 2021 as profits have continued to be battered.

I've worked ridiculous hours all through, 6.30-9pm not unusual (when we were having to home school as well I worked chunks of the weekend too). We've had to tender for a new client (got that) and two existing clients (lost one, the other still in progress) so hugely stressful and lots of extra non chargeable work.

I have saved on travel fares (£5k+ a year) and we made our evening Nanny redundant Sad. Also saved on petrol and going out. I am lucky to still have a job ...

Crispsginchoc · 06/12/2020 22:38

I’ve been wfh for a few years. Luckily I still have a job (tech) and received a pay rise a few months ago. Husband works in an industry that’s really been impacted by covid. He was about to start a new job in March, but they had to retract the offer. They’ve just been in contact with him again and hopefully he’ll be starting in January. We are lucky we could get by on my salary alone. It’s still been a worrying time - as for most people - and once we’re back on two salaries will be saving like mad, as who knows what the future holds.

PyongyangKipperbang · 06/12/2020 22:49

NOpe

Was made redundant 4 weeks ago (less than 2 years so no payout) and 2 weeks ago my boiler packed up. No savings, no heating, no hot water, no job.

Life sucks about as much as it could right now.

Parkermumma07 · 06/12/2020 23:09

Police officer worked more hours than normal! Just glad I still have a job

Trickyboy · 06/12/2020 23:18

Civil service in a department in the frontline since start of Covid - but my job is in a specialist part of the department. WFH since Feb. So saved over 20% salary on commute.

Also have as much overtime as I wish. So yes. Much busier and earning 50% more.

WinterWhore · 06/12/2020 23:21

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon

I have.

Support Worker for adults with LD. Paid hourly. Lots of cover needed as other staff furloughed/isolating. Could opt out, but the guys I look after need me.

The last six months or so I've earnt the most I've ever earnt.

However, I am totally exhausted.

Snap I'm earning triple to what I usually earn!
CoRhona · 06/12/2020 23:32

DH and I both unaffected but savings definitely increased (includes money back from our cancelled summer holiday).

wonderstuff · 06/12/2020 23:38

I'm a teacher, I asked to reduce my hours from September, not covid related. DH was furloughed and then made redundant, after a couple of weeks of hustling he's now working and we should be on the same or slightly better money, he's in technical sales.
We're very lucky. Had an awful time last recession, I really feel for people losing jobs, it's terrifying really.

sansou · 07/12/2020 13:09

DH & I are in telecoms & IT and both are fairly profitable companies normally. Both of us have taken 15% pay cuts. This year, they are using up healthy cash reserves due to reduced profits/outputs. Factories/manufacturing have reduced output due to COVID 19. Initial increase in demand in the spring has now fallen as clients retract/cut their spending on future projects which is what happens in a recession.

We were heavily impacted back in the 2008/9 recession but we both managed to find new equivalent jobs within 6/12 mths. Not expecting the same if it happens this time round especially now we’re in our 50’s. Previous redundancies have taught us to have a rainy day cushion because we have needed it in the past and it’s looking extremely likely that we’ll need in next year! I will never forget how stressful it was when our redundancies overlapped and all we could see was our savings draining rather quickly on monthly expenditure. This time round, it’s going to be much worse. Vaccination cannot come sooner imo.

Simplyunacceptable · 07/12/2020 13:12

I’m a college tutor so my job was unaffected. I mean, I spent four months before my mat leave started at home when I’d usually have still been teaching but aside from that...

DH is an engineer so his job has also been unaffected. He has spent a chunk of time WFH which has been different but he hasn’t lost any money. We’re lucky to work in unaffected sectors, people always need engineers and teachers.

hopingforonlychild · 07/12/2020 13:16

DH and I are in the same jobs, same pay and hours but now WFH. We actually haven't spent less. Yes we save on the £150 per month TFL season ticket but we get takeaway and online shop- which usually isn't cheaper than buying in-store. During the week when I was in the office, I was usually too exhausted to shop anyway.

WFH is not permanent for me, my employer is keen for us to get back to the office and we don't even have a long lease. DH works for a big investment bank and they probably have a far longer lease on their large offices, so i expect wfh is temporary for him too.

Calmandmeasured1 · 07/12/2020 13:22

DH wfh on same hours for Business Consultancy. Despite never having been paid overtime before, has received a few hundred pounds extra on 3 occasions.

Saves £270 per month on travel costs, saving mileage and wear and tear on car and also saving on cost of lunches as costs less at home. Much prefers wfh.

Fluffybutter · 07/12/2020 13:22

Nothing has changed for me work wise and dh got a promotion.
I would say we are “lucky” but tbf, dh has worked his arse off this year.

LilyLongJohn · 07/12/2020 17:50

The company I work for has done really well, we're a technology company providing services to other companies, so we've been providing working from home solutions to most of our customers, plus the NHS is one of our largest customers.

My dh has been working. 60+ hrs a week with little chance of a let up.

I consider us both to be very fortunate, we've not been furloughed and in jobs which are as safe as they can be at the moment.

FredtheCatsMum · 07/12/2020 17:51

Left a job in February (long story, awful place, lawyers involved), planning to go overseas for a couple months, then come back here. Got locked down abroad, finally made it back then started looking for a job which is proving very difficult. Some roles have over 1000 applicants, even though they're fairly senior.
Have about 1 day a week freelancing, which doesn't cover the bills, so savings disappearing rapidly. Also, no support from the government at all, because technically I left my last job.

CambsAlways · 07/12/2020 17:58

My DH has been working exactly the same

icelollycraving · 07/12/2020 18:05

Or did the coke keep her up? Both kinds btw.

icelollycraving · 07/12/2020 18:05

Oops wrong thread Grin

altiara · 07/12/2020 18:06

I work in the pharmaceutical industry (clinical research), no change with salary. We did get annual pay rises in April.
Nearly ex DH is in IT for investment banking, he’ll be out of a job soon because of Brexit. They’ve been moving work to other countries (not a UK bank).

IndieTara · 07/12/2020 18:07

Made redundant in first lockdown. Found a job 2 moths later but initially only part time and currently struggling for hours. Single parent too

Mesoavocado · 07/12/2020 18:08

Went back to full time hours as my DH could negotiate less hours due to Covid so much better off

However NHS so have had little time off this year

babytantrums · 07/12/2020 18:13

Work in tv/advertising production. Was on furlough, then made redundant in July. As I’m slightly older. I wonder if I’ll get a job, or freelance work in this industry again. I’m very lucky as my husband is still employed and has worked throughout. I would love to be working though.

Empressofthemundane · 07/12/2020 18:15

I lost my job, then got 4 other job offers. I’ve ended up with a 20% pay rise working for a better known company.

I’m very, very lucky.
