Kept your jobs on the same hour or even done better out of coronavirus?
DP has but I know many who have lost jobs or had hours reduced.

I wonder what the position will be 2 years from now?

Probably very different people at risk. Certainly public sector jobs.

windturbines · 06/12/2020 19:18

Oh, my previous post seems to juxtapose itself in how I described my partner's job. Let me clarify-

Day to day the job can be unpredictable and stressful (staffing issues, customer complaints, etc). On the whole, it is reliable and consistent as he knows he has a job to go to every day in an industry which hasn't been affected by CV.

ItsLikeSputnik · 06/12/2020 19:19

I’m a home delivery picker for a supermarket. At the beginning of March, we were a team of 20 (pickers/drivers/team leaders) - now there are more than 100 of us. Multiply that across the business and well, it’s booming. We’re all knackered though.

3rdNamechange · 06/12/2020 19:20

Front line NHS so a crazy amount of hours. Seems worse this time. More staff off. Less beds. Quite hideous.

SimplySusanna · 06/12/2020 19:20

I work for a bank...we transferred to homeworking early in March and my hours/pay have stayed the same.

I've done better out of it because we're so busy that there's been unlimited overtime available at time and a half for months now. There's still far too much work and I can't see this changing for quite a while.

Littleposh · 06/12/2020 19:21

I was a self employed caterer so didn't work from the end of March until I started as a civil servant in August.

The wage is considerably better than I have ever had and I love the pension. It's not permanent but I plan to stay in the civil service now, if they'll have me

JillyCareful · 06/12/2020 19:22

Civil servant. Yes we’ve all kept our jobs on same pay, but some people have been redeployed to different areas of work, like getting food parcels out, or operating emergency grant schemes.

MustardMitt · 06/12/2020 19:26

My job hasn't really changed - I don't get OT. I could WFH but didn't all the time before March.

I'm hoping for a decent bonus in March as I have saved my employer a lot of money by some of the changes I've put in, but I can't be sure.

I work for a huge high street bank which didn't furlough anyone.

PontiacBandit · 06/12/2020 19:27

I've gone from 4 days to FT, not much point in that extra day if I can't do anything with it. I had a 10% payrise a few months back and a good Xmas bonus. I'm exhausted though, managed to squeeze 2 weeks off this year but still contactable so working a bit.

However I do appreciate how lucky I've been given the general state of employment at the moment and to come.

delilahbucket · 06/12/2020 19:27

I'm a self employed retailer and have done fantastically well, even becoming an employer twice myself. That said, there's been no let up, and it's horrendous at the moment. I'm working 14-15 hour days (still at work now and I don't work from home, am hoping I'll be home by 9) snatching quick drink breaks like now!
Dp is a mortgage adviser and survived redundancies, but 50% of his colleagues didn't. His pay has remained unchanged but the pressure he is currently under is ridiculous as he is doing four people's jobs and up until this week has been doing them on two hours less per day as they were on reduced opening hours.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/12/2020 19:28

I work in furniture manufacturing. I was on furlough for a few weeks in March/April time when the virus was new, people were very scared and with economic uncertainty no one was buying. Then suddenly orders went through the roof. The pandemic has helped business, no one is going on holiday so everyone is buying new furniture instead. We have taken record sales over autumn and winter. We do expect things to quiet down once foreign travel starts up widely again so who knows what will happen then.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 06/12/2020 19:29

I'm a nurse, DH fixes garden machinery. He did well in lock down because his local competition was closed but he is mobile so carried on. Weirdly it's gone very quiet the last month but he reckons that's not covid related. Something to do with temperature and grass growing.

Lulu1919 · 06/12/2020 19:29

Husband on furlough ...80% low paid job
I'm a TA worked all the way through including some holidays
It's tight
Mental health not great

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 06/12/2020 19:33

I worked straight through. DH was furloughed and back since August. They are a bit quieter due to local areas having different restrictions.

No difference in wages, Barr increase for me as i changed to a higher pay grade and get performance increases every year till you reach the top of the grade.

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 06/12/2020 19:33

Made more money this year than I ever have before for a couple of key reasons one of them is coronavirus.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/12/2020 19:34

DH - no change although nature of the work altered a bit when his main role couldn't be performed.

I'm HR - flat out since this time last year - covid escalated work pressures massively. 12.5% pay cut. Dire.

Wankerchief · 06/12/2020 19:39

Corner shop worker usually 20 hours a week
Been doing 45+ hours a week since april.
I'm very tired but grateful to have a job

Lewesq4 · 06/12/2020 19:39

Much, much worse for both. It’s been quite dire and we’ve fallen through the furlough gap (previously freelancers and contract staff so no support for us largely). We’re selling our house and downsizing as a consequence. Absolutely because of Covid - we’re in entertainment / art and creative industries.

We have been incredibly stressed and my mental health has taken a battering. All the stress has been about work / money and nothing else!

UnholyConfessions · 06/12/2020 19:39

Better. I paid off my overdrafts (nearly £3k) and have savings put aside for a car. Most of this made selling shit I didn’t want online and also not buying shit I didn’t want in the first place 🤣. Old clothes, DVDs etc all because I was hone pretty much 24/7 and could list things here and there throughout the week.

Everything else the same though. No real change but I am in a better financial place despite it.

Stepintochristmas2020 · 06/12/2020 19:40

Its been a very busy year, lots of overtime and stress and ended up getting promoted.

I work for an essential retailer which has done very well this year. We've had profit related bonuses every month since July in my store so financially I'm better off than last year. However we have worked hard for and it's been tough going.

My DH is an optician and was furloughed in the first lockdown and now works from home doing remote eyecare. No change in salary or hours. No bonus any more but less petrol used and no coffees and parking to pay for.

Hoppinggreen · 06/12/2020 19:44

My Freelance work stopped so I applied for and got a really good job. I earn far more now than Pre Covid and I get paid holidays, healthcare, pension and work trips abroad all expenses paid next year (Covid allowing).
DH is a Contractor working for HMRC, he has been offered over time due to Covid and Brexit on time and a half or 25% of day rate if he’s on the weekend rota but not called.
Plus wfh abd lockdown we aren’t spending as much so we have more £ now than before Covid.
I know we are very very lucky to be in this position

GreySkyClouds · 06/12/2020 19:45

@LaurieFairyCake

More clients now due to pandemic (private therapist) - probably not a surprise
Ha! That’s why the OPs question is so hard. I’m working at least 12 hours a day in my 9-5 job. All the people I know who have retained their jobs are working similar hours. It has been 9 months and we’re close to burn out. I don’t know if that means we’ve done better because of coronavirus :(
PilatesPeach · 06/12/2020 19:47

Over 5 months this year of no work and no money. I'm in leisure sector so always being closed down.
