Kept your jobs on the same hour or even done better out of coronavirus?
DP has but I know many who have lost jobs or had hours reduced.

dh and I - salaried. Money coming in still the same, hours seem to be a lot longer (we are both in jobs where you are paid 'to do the job' rather than for hours worked), and both working from home which is draining.

However, in our close family, we have a lot of young working adults

Young Adult (YA) 1 : Furloughed March - July and during Nov, lots of colleagues made redundent but he is ok at the moment
YA2 : had 2 jobs - one in retail and one in a pub - the shop went bust quite eraly on. The pub was zero hours so no furlough
YA3 : Musician - lots everything - all bookings tat festivals, at weddings, at pubs and gigs elsewhere. No 'furlough'. No self employed money as not got enough accounts as this was first year out of university. Had been due to do very well last year, but nothing
YA3: Pub deputy manager - furloughed until Aug. Worked Aug. Furloughed since.
YA4: Finished university. Not able to get anything with her degree. Has picked up jobs which then disappeared - one in a shop, one in outdoor and leisure. Currently has supermarket work up until Christmas.
YA5 - No work (is a lifeguard on a PT 'zero hours' contract whilst studying) since March
YA6 : - in a 'professional' role, doing a masters. Company furloughed them until Sept then took them back, to work full time, on 80% of their previous salary Hmm

and so is the same with most of their friends, except those who were lucky enough to have work in supermarkets.

Minniem2020 · 06/12/2020 19:48

After avoiding redundancy my hours and pay are the same although I'm now working from home. I work in travel though so I'm not naive enough to think that it'll last forever.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/12/2020 19:49

Oh and as for saving money, four of us, adults, were at home from March to October. 4 x 3 meals a day! My commuting costs are minimal so no savings there. Having said that we were very lucky.

Plsv87 · 06/12/2020 19:49

I'm a KW and my job has been unaffected. DH's job is 100% doable from home so his has been unaffected too. We are so grateful, a lot of our friends are self employed and/or work in TV so have been living on 80% of their income.

speakout · 06/12/2020 19:50

I am crazy busy. Self employed online retail business. Orders have trebled since covid.

MyristicaFragrans · 06/12/2020 19:52

I’m WFH in the same PT job. I have so much work now, though, that I can’t fit it in. This is because lots of my colleagues took voluntary redundancy when it was offered in the summer.

DH still FT also WFH. He’s better off/happier as he doesn’t have a massive commute now. Used to be four hours a day...

Skyshale · 06/12/2020 19:53

I interviewed successfully via Teams for a secure job in the construction industry. I feel very lucky - my job isn't amazing (fun or exciting) but I am safe in the knowledge I won't lose it.

amusedbush · 06/12/2020 19:54

Until June I was a university administrator and was working my normal hours from home on full pay. My contract came to an end (as planned) mid-June and at the start of July I became a full-time student, still doing everything from home. I've also been able to pick up extra cash teaching undergrad tutorials via Zoom.

DH is a postie so has obviously been very busy throughout this year. Because Royal Mail stopped them sharing vans, his partner has been loading the van and driving to the start of their walk, where DH meets him on foot. This has meant he can get up later as his walk is five minutes from our house and he doesn't have to go into the sorting office first, so it's actually working out better for him.

I've kept my job (retail) have been furloughed twice but because I work part time and my employer pays the Real Living Wage I was receiving more or less the same (maybe a few pounds a week less) during furlough.

My DH was head hunted in July and ended up with a much better paid job .... we are very fortunate.

nitsandwormsdodger · 06/12/2020 19:59

Teacher safe job money wise
Work load doubled
But put my life and that if my clinically vulnerable child and baby at risk
No point having secure job if dead or suffering long covid

HelloDaisy · 06/12/2020 20:00

Dh and I run a construction industry business and we are incredibly busy, actually need more staff but can’t find any!
Worked stopped completely during the first lock down, nobody rang or emailed us for nearly 10 weeks but then it all went crazy and diaries have been full since then.

PrincessBuggerPants · 06/12/2020 20:03

I have had a slight improvement.

I am a freelance science and health journalist and I have been more in demand this year, and had more clients, who are higher profile, and been paid more per hour this year than before.

In fact it was quite tough in the first lockdown, I had so many offers of work that it was very tough to say yes while looking after my toddler full time as nurseries were closed which made it hard to make the most of the fact my skills we in more demand than they ever had been before.

But I am aware this was a good problem to have.

WobbliHead3000 · 06/12/2020 20:03

I work for a police force in a staff role. I returned from mat leave during lockdown 1 and recently was successful in a promotion during lockdown 2.
We’re all wfh but have not had our workloads affected by it except we can’t do things face-to-face.
DH is a key worker so not affected either. He works out of the home though and on regular shifts

Soubriquet · 06/12/2020 20:04

Online shopper at a supermarket

Hours have boomed to the point where I have to start earlier

Previous hours used to be 4-8.

Now I’m doing 2-9.

Whattheactual20201 · 06/12/2020 20:06

I am a make up artist and stylist for a tv show as my 4 days a week job. So my work has been all over the place. I also usually do 1 day a week outside normal work things like shoots which also stopped the one day a week normally brings in more money than my 4 day job. I’m not on maternity.

BeigeFoodLover · 06/12/2020 20:06

DH has continued on as norma, just at home.

Me - I have two jobs. Freelance died a death, salary, I was furloughed until September, and hours cut (to less than half), with the option to do additional hours if the work was in. Probably earned more in November then I have in about 3 years, but I know this month and January are going to be hard. However, I think we are incredibly fortunate right now and thanking lucky stars.

Fastforwardtospring · 06/12/2020 20:09

In Aerospace supply chain, got promoted in April, been WFH since March, lots of work colleagues made redundant, under no illusion that despite promotion my job is safe but at least have got 6 months in at higher salary to enhance redundancy payout. DH is keyworker, we save on my commuting costs but need to keep the house warm for WFH so swings and roundabouts.

vanillandhoney · 06/12/2020 20:11

I'm a dog walker. It understandably went quiet over lockdown but now I'm busier than ever. This week I'm absolutely rammed full - making £100 a day easily.

Luckily I close for Christmas in two weeks as I'm exhausted! Grin

blue25 · 06/12/2020 20:11

Yes both still working full time so wages unaffected.

I’m wfh & we’ve saved lots of money as no commute, holidays, theatre etc.

BeyondMyWits · 06/12/2020 20:13

Pharmacy, working more hours than ever. Covid, brexit, Christmas...perfect storm... we are soooo busy as a community pharmacy. People working from home switched to us, then stayed when they liked the personal service.

CakeRequired · 06/12/2020 20:14

Was lucky no reduced hours and kept working, but it's computer security, that will never be quiet or stop now.

lioncitygirl · 06/12/2020 20:15

I have. PR, no furlough.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 06/12/2020 20:15

Self employed cleaner. Busy like you wouldn’t believe.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 06/12/2020 20:16

Oh yes and I’ve saved a fortune as restaurants, gigs, theatre was a huge part of my social life.
