Kept your jobs on the same hour or even done better out of coronavirus?
DP has but I know many who have lost jobs or had hours reduced.

I'l tell you who I think is doing okay - florists! I ordered flowers last week and asked how business was doing, My local florist closed to the public during both lockdowns but the staff were all there and working throughout. When you can't go in person and see someone you love, what do you do? You send them flowers.

skankingpiglet · 06/12/2020 18:46

Self-employed. I had three months of no work followed by 3 months of only working some weekends because of the DCs being at home. Since Sept I have been flat out working between 5 and 7 days/week (I worked 2-3 days/week before March) as the world and his wife have all simultaneously decided to have work done. I have the Xmas and half term holidays left clear of work (although will likely do the odd weekend day) but am otherwise fully booked until mid March. I'm totally burnt out from 6 straight months of homeschooling and childcare followed by three months of full on work schedule. The next two weeks can't pass fast enough.
On the positive side, by Xmas I will have earned enough to cover my losses whilst the DCs were home.

I’ve been furloughed, but employer topped up to 100%. Feel incredibly fortunate, but still just hoping to have job at the end of it all. DH wfh throughout.

doadeer · 06/12/2020 18:47

My industry is booming I've got extra hours. No risk of losing it. I work in ecommerce

LajesticVantrashell · 06/12/2020 18:49

DH and I both WFH, both manic busy. I'm in cyber, he's in engineering. My company just reported best year ever results and are recruiting like mad. Both feel incredibly fortunate and even if we wanted to leave, we won't be going anywhere while our industries are still operating this well.

Crystal87 · 06/12/2020 18:49

DH's job has not been affected at all. He was off for a few weeks on full pay paid for by the company not furlough, then was back as normal and is no better to worse off than before.

catgirl1976 · 06/12/2020 18:49

My Job has stayed the same. DH is self employed and has no work coming in at all so is doing a minimum wage job from home as a call centre person. So we are a fair bit worse off but saving money on petrol, lunches, meals out, school clubs, holidays and so on so it’s not unmanageable and hopefully his work will come back in the future.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/12/2020 18:49

DH in Army. Been non stop since April (they were 'evacuated' out of France very quickly and suddenly, then had to quarantine for a couple of weeks). Still very busy, and expecting it to increase over winter.

Gotothewinchester · 06/12/2020 18:52

We have done better this year - one of us has been promoted and the other is working from home so saving hundreds in commuting costs. Extremely fortunate.

Meercatmama · 06/12/2020 18:54

Knowing how lucky I am to have a job and still being paid the same.Son has ben furloughed twice but now back at work. Husband providing childcare for granddaughter to help other son and daughter in law as he is self employed and has the least regular work and can pick it up after the situation becomes different All of us considered ourselves extremely lucky and working together as a family. My heart goes out to those who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. I hope it improves for you

whiteroseredrose · 06/12/2020 18:55

I'm on the same hours / salary but working from home. DH had a 20% pay cut.

fishykettles · 06/12/2020 18:56

I work the same hours.

MollyButton · 06/12/2020 18:58

I have, but Civil Service. I've had a lot more opportunities to help out on various projects, and can even do extra hours now.

I'm not brilliantly paid but the job security has really paid off.

Suckmyfatone · 06/12/2020 18:59

I am WFH. Absolutely no change to my hours. 9-4.30 with an hour for lunch.

I work for a trade union so we've never been busier.

I feel so lucky to have been able to work from home and keep my job and wages. I never take it for granted, especially because I hear on a daily basis from the people struggling. Its heartbreaking.

PattyPan · 06/12/2020 19:00

I am working the same hours as before and didn’t get furloughed, I’ve been working from home since March. So I’m better off because I’ve saved my commuting costs.

MerlotChiantiMontepulicano · 06/12/2020 19:00

DH has had no change in his hours. I got a job in august after 4.5 years as a sahm so not affect here.

emilyfrost · 06/12/2020 19:02

Business is booming where I work in the hospitality industry so no redundancies or reduced hours for us thankfully.

naemates · 06/12/2020 19:03

My DH has gotten his first science job since he graduated 4 years ago working in a COVID lab, and I'm on my fourth job of the year, avoided unemployment and ended up in pretty much my original job, but with a more secure contract.

I have been so, so, so so so lucky and count my blessings constantly.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 06/12/2020 19:03

Yes, both keyworkers and both doing extra. We're shattered but grateful that we have our jobs.

MrsJBaptiste · 06/12/2020 19:07

DH works in the airline industry. Say no more... although he does still have a job.

I'm WFH but snowed under and have working increased hours since June. Knackered but very grateful to still have a job.

ShopTattsyrup · 06/12/2020 19:09

No change for me (nurse), partner (TV crew) lost his original job but managed to find a new one after the first lockdown - similar hours and better pay but based about 90mins from us so although we are lucky and he has done better than many in the industry that's just good fortune that he has the ability to be flexible to take a job away from home unlike some of his colleagues.

Spudface75 · 06/12/2020 19:10

Nothing has changed at all. Still working from the office, as is DH. I have a little more money because I’ve not been going anywhere, on the other hand I no longer car share because of Covid, so it’s costing me a lot more in commuting costs.

TheGriffle · 06/12/2020 19:12

Dh and I work for (different) local authorities, classed as key workers and our workloads are through the roof. We’re both working from home with Dh doing occasional visits.

Dh got a promotion a couple of months ago so we are very lucky to be in secure jobs at the moment. My job has become a little more flexible as well and it has been a big help being at home while the kids were off/isolating/school hols when normally we would have to fork out a fortune in childcare.

Wiredforsound · 06/12/2020 19:14

Academics here. Workloads are horrendous. One of us made redundant, and I’m at risk. Reasons given are Covid and Brexit.

windturbines · 06/12/2020 19:15

I'm on mat leave currently but my job and my hours are waiting for me when I return next year. It's been one of the few times that I've been glad and lucky to have a pretty basic job (other than being glad of the flexibility and the way it fits around my two young children easily).

Similarly, my partner is a retail manager and he's done very well this year. Sales have been through the roof. However, he's also worked like a dog throughout the entire thing, and Covid isolation cases means every day in work is unpredictable and stressful. Again, for him it's a time where he's thankful he has a job that, although isn't super high paid, it's reliable and consistent.

We have always lived within our means but we are thankful that even with my standard maternity pay, our income hasn't changed at all compared to what we expected it to be this year.

That being said, as anyone who's been on SMP will know, it's still a squeeze sometimes. I'm looking forward to being back at work next year for a much welcomed boost in income. I am very grateful that I have a job to go back to.
