Kept your jobs on the same hour or even done better out of coronavirus?
DP has but I know many who have lost jobs or had hours reduced.

I run my own business and had to get rid of two staff, but managed to furlough the remaining four on 100% pay, so they are doing good.

Unfortunately the government saw fit to exclude the actual limited business owners from any furlough or support so I've decided to quit the business and will fold it in the new year to take a years break.

So my other four staff will loose jobs due to the short sighted government, If they had supported me I maybe wouldn't feel so disheartened about the sacrifices I've made over the last 18 years to grow my own business.

Many small businesses like mine will fold.

Peanutbutteryogurt · 06/12/2020 20:20

I work for the NHS so carried on as normal. DP's company's whole basis is around providing tech for companies who's staff work remotely so they've been doing very well. I don't directly know anyone who has lost their job due to this

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/12/2020 20:23

Doubled my hours but DH has been made redundant.

Overall I’d count ourselves pretty lucky.

Aozora13 · 06/12/2020 20:27

I work for an NGO in the aid sector and hearing lots about redundancies. Thankfully my organisation seems to be weathering the storm ok so my job is safe at least for now. However I was off sick for 2.5 months with long covid and had to drop down to part time for another 3 so that affected my pay packet.

Nhsisfucked · 06/12/2020 20:28

DH wfh for the foreseeable. I actually got a new job in the middle of the year, one I really wanted too so better money, the contract was made permanent last week, I feel grateful everyday for being so secure right now. I haven’t met anyone yet to have lost their jobs, my sisters business in hospitality is on its knees though 😢

LindaEllen · 06/12/2020 20:30

I'm a self employed writer and my main clients have been on furlough therefore they haven't been using my services.

DP however works in the funeral industry therefore has been working every hour possible since March.

So it really is swings and roundabouts, and honestly, our income has been pretty much the same, given my self employed grant.

WhySoSensitive · 06/12/2020 20:31

Lost my job as a veterinary nurse. Can’t find work anywhere within one hour of me for part time hours (toddler DC limits my availability!)

DH has had no change. Thankfully.

Coquohvan · 06/12/2020 20:40

Our CCTV & alarm business is manic as companies are beefing up security & installing thermal scanners. DH has recruited more engineering staff to cope.
So busier than pre COVID more people in employment with us.

MangoBiscuit · 06/12/2020 20:43

Single mum, same job, same salary, technically the same hours but my work load has gone up, and I've been wfh. So all the money I've saved on my commute (I change jobs las year to decrease it, so not much) has gone on sorting my home working / home schooling environment, and if anything, I have less free time, and a hit to my mental health. I know I'm still bloody lucky though, and I do, for the most part, love my job. Also, lucky enough I haven't lost anyone. So still counting my lucky stars.

TiersOfAClown · 06/12/2020 20:44

I work in IT, always based primaril at home 3 or 4 days a week. I have kept my job and work in a stable sector (and am VERY grateful).

In some ways I am a little worse off because 1-2 days a week I travelled to clients and our offices and had my mileage expensed, which more than covered petrol and wear/tear. But it is a tiny loss, compared to so many.

HaggieMaggie · 06/12/2020 20:48

We are all key workers. DH transport, DS transport, DD frontline NHS, me telecoms. All of us have been massively stretched for months.

pointythings · 06/12/2020 20:50

Well, I've worked more hours (NHS but not front line) but not made more money. Not sure if that counts. My contract ends at the end of March.

whatkatydid2013 · 06/12/2020 20:53

We both have the same salaried jobs. OH has same salary. I’ve had a 9% pay rise & various random thank you gifts from work for the crazy hours we’ve done at times over the past few months (vouchers, food deliveries, wine). We’ve also had access to lots of online stuff like exercise classes, help & resources to do home schooling, mental health & wellbeing sessions and loads of flexibility on working hours. We’ve been really lucky

FortunesFave · 06/12/2020 20:55

I'm a freelance writer and I've done better. I feel bad for that sometimes but it's because of the need for more online content.

FortunesFave · 06/12/2020 20:56

LindaEllen what sectors do you write for? My work has doubled. I write marketing and tech content.

sage46 · 06/12/2020 20:57

NHS,
so not effected money wise. I haven't taken any annual leave since July so getting tired now.

Maryann1975 · 06/12/2020 20:57

I work in childcare. So 10 weeks off, mega busy June and July, quiet August (as normal), then back to normal in September.
Dh works in manufacturing. Also furloughed March/April/May, normal in summer then mega busy through autumn till now, maximum overtime each week (preparing for a no deal brexit- if they can export it all now that’s much better economically apparently).

DramaAlpaca · 06/12/2020 20:58

My job hasn't changed. If anything it's been much busier.

My adult DC work in hospitality and haven't been so lucky.

TheChristmasPrincess · 06/12/2020 20:58

I was made redundant at the end of last year and got a job as a receptionist at the hospital on a permanent contract.

WildOrchids67 · 06/12/2020 20:58

WFH, same hours but loads of overtime available. Our company also gave us 10% extra on our hourly wage and is doing this again over Xmas. I work for a supermarket so I'm one of the lucky ones. I know people who have lost their jobs because of the pandemic and really feel for them having to try to find something else in the middle of all this.

5zeds · 06/12/2020 21:06

Hideously long hours, ££s ok but I’m not sure how we are going to manage the next bit.

shazshaz · 06/12/2020 21:08

I've worked extra hours (education) and so has DH (MOD). Money hasn't changed much - its mainly unpaid overtime for DH & I'm on minimum wage. Very glad we still have jobs, although physically & mentally I'm done in and aware I'm no longer giving it 100%.

AudTheDeepMinded · 06/12/2020 21:11

Nope, DH hours have been reduced so we're down about £300 a month on his wages. I'm self employed and have done around the same as usual, but with the added joy of children under my feet for three months.

alltoomuchrightnow · 06/12/2020 21:12

Retail. Closed in the first lockdown (non essential). Worked behind closed doors in the last one.
In summer, hours went up but were insane for me, couldn't cope, 70-90 hours a week, about 20 unpaid a week.
Now hours hugely cut, can't survive..

MiaMarshmallows · 06/12/2020 21:12

Interesting responses.
DP is annoyed at how everyone keeps saying how lucky he is. Mainly because he earns fantastic money wfh and has not been ill or lost anyone to covid. But he has worked flat out and is exhausted, all our social events have stopped and we can't see each other because we do not live together so it is indeed swings and roundabouts.
