Would doing this make my dd a bit spoilt?

Last night dd was out and her phone must have fallen out of her pocket. She arrived back absolutely distraught. We managed to track it on the find my I phone thing and her dad collected it from the street! It was smashed in 1 corner but now doesn't work. I haven't yet inspected it but the extra annoying thing is we were going to surprise her for Christmas with an upgrade.
So my dilemma now, do we pay for a repair or upgrade the phone now earlier than planned?
Her current phone until it smashed last night is an i phone 11 and I wanted to sell it to recoup some costs back from upgrading. So it would need fixing if I did that. But I have no idea the cost of fixing it versus what I'd get for selling it.
But if we just upgrade immediately, not only does it completely ruin the surprise on Christmas day (and her sibling would get a surprise too when she'd already had hers) It would also seem like the wrong message to send to her as she was obviously careless. Like showing her don't worry sweetie, you've smashed your phone here's a better one to replace it with! Wwyd?

@Lovemusic33

I would get it fixed but not upgrade it, once fixed she doesn’t really need a new phone? My dd has the old iPhone 6 (she’s almost 17), she’s had it a few years and will be getting a upgrade for her birthday because it no longer holds charge.
I just replaced my also nearly 17 year olds iPhone 6 with an SE as the 6 was goosed. She liked the size of the 6 as she has small hands so it made sense to go for the new SE.

I’m surprised the XR is water damaged after a short time outside. My husband has the XR and has dropped it in the bath and it’s absolutely fine.

Have you not got an older phone you can give her to use for 3 weeks? Or just buy a £25 phone from tesco or asda to use temporarily until Xmas.

Balaur · 05/12/2020 14:30

@Pipandmum a booth in Leeds city centre. Has been absolutely fine ever since.

Allllllaboutme · 05/12/2020 14:35

Oh no you've not let anyone other than Apple fix it have you?

Benjispruce2 · 05/12/2020 16:31

FD dropped her iPhone 7 and got it fixed for £40 including new screen at a little independent shop-was all good.

Maisymooster · 05/12/2020 16:47

It's fixed. Going to collect it shortly. Thank fuck! Dd has finally emerged from her bedroom! And yes fixed not with Apple. I've done it before with a different phone and it's not been a problem.

How much did it cost to fix?

I think posters are saying that non Apple fixes invalidate things not that they don't work, they clearly do and for a fraction of the cost

Leedsfan247 · 06/12/2020 17:43

First world problems

MaskingForIt · 06/12/2020 18:00

@Balaur

And here come the "an iPhone 11 wow" folks. It's irrelevant to what the OP is asking!
I’ll be honest, I’m more 😮 at all the people who have spare (and working) phones lying around. We use ours until they break, and then they replace them. I don’t understand buying a new one when the old one still works.

goes off to put some more steam into the iPhone6

Br1256 · 06/12/2020 18:04

Can you claim on the house insurance ....

I usually replace mine after 2-4 years when they technically still 'work' but are a bit buggy/crap/slow but I always sell the old phone on ebay and am surprised how much people are prepared to pay for second hand phones.

I got £60 for a 2 YO Huawei crap thing last time I sold a phone, and the Moto G7 I replaced it with only cost me £75 (admittedly a bargain as they were normally about £140 but I got a black friday deal plus Quidco cashback) but was light years ahead in terms of speed and space for apps/photos etc. I can't see me replacing this one any time soon as I find switching over from old to new phone such a dull PITA.

mussymummy · 06/12/2020 18:40

Well I would say she is already spoilt having an iPhone 11. Depends on her age. If she is 8 you are being a twat. If she is 14 plus then get it repaired, make her pay for the repair and she still gets a surprise on Christmas day

Lucyccfc68 · 06/12/2020 18:47

This happened to my 14 year old DS last December. Dropped his iPhone 5, but was getting an 8 for Christmas. No way was he getting the new phone early. I made him pay to have the screen fixed. Only way they learn to look after things.

There is no way my teenager would have an iPhone 11. I can afford one, but until he can afford to buy a seriously expensive phone himself and look after it, he won’t be getting one from me.

Purplealienpuke · 06/12/2020 19:18

@Balaur can I ask what part of the country you live please? My dd's iPhone needs a screen and I've been asked for alot more.

In your shoes OP I would fix the phone and stick to the plan. You are going to be out of pocket but if you hadn't been upgrading you'd have still had the repair cost.

Balaur · 06/12/2020 19:30

@Purplealienpuke Leeds

MrsGrindah · 06/12/2020 19:40

@Balaur I know the very booth! Excellent service after my cat decided to swipe my IPad to the floor. Made sure I had it back for Xmas too.

exaltedwombat · 06/12/2020 19:44

Nothing wrong with 'Well, you were going to get an upgrade for Christmas, you'd better have it a bit early!' If she's old enough to be walking round with an iPhone 11, she's old enough for that not to be traumatic!

(Are you sure you've got the numbering right? The 11 was only last year. Hardly due for upgrading yet.)

MiddleClassMother · 06/12/2020 19:44

Get her a little brick phone (you can buy them in places like argos etc) with a £10 top up to last til Christmas, she will be MUCH more careful with her next one! Did she use a case?

MiddleClassMother · 06/12/2020 19:46

@exaltedwombat
A lot of people (particularly teens) upgrade to the latest iPhone every year, I do because I like having the latest features and my phone is often a bit battered by the end of the year😅

Balaur · 06/12/2020 19:47

@MrsGrindah the one in the St John's centre? If so, yes it's been great.

MrsGrindah · 06/12/2020 19:49

Ah no mine was in the Trinity

Balaur · 06/12/2020 19:50

Must be a few bargain booths around in Leeds Smile

PandaBearCub · 06/12/2020 20:02

If she keeps a £700 (maybe more) iPhone in a flimsy case in her pocket then maybe she shouldn’t have an upgrade. iPhones are notoriously expensive to fix.

Purplealienpuke · 06/12/2020 20:42

@Balaur thanks. Edinburgh buggers are chancers then 🙄
