Coffee when I wake up.

I would like coffee when I wake up. And I'm lazy. So I've moved the spare kettle to my bedside so I can make my coffee first thing without getting out of bed (I drink it black).

My husband thinks this is ridiculous, the kettle is ugly, and it's all very unnecessary. My usually easy going husband seems to feel quite strongly about this.

He has offered:

  1. Buy a teasmade - I don't see the point it doesn't do much more than the kettle and isn't exactly a design statement.
  2. He'll make a cup of coffee anytime I want one - it's not exactly relaxing demanding a hot drink whilst he trips off like my manservant. I'll just feel like a bitch and end up going downstairs.
  3. Buy an expensive coffee gizmo thing - it's expensive. It's for a coffee a couple of mornings a week. We have a proper bean to cup machine downstairs which I can use when I can be bothered to haul meself (probably after I've enjoyed a cup of instant from my kettle set up).

Aibu to set up a kettle, and possibly small hostess tray for 1 beside my bed?

@MissCadoganTate that's lovely, thank you

SlippersForFlippers · 05/12/2020 12:22

I think you should go all out with one of these. Not sure why I haven't considered this before!

Xmas Grin Slippers, that's a divorce waiting to happen!

jetadore · 05/12/2020 12:30

Yabu. Let him make you coffee if he's capable and offering to do so.

knackersknockersknickers · 05/12/2020 12:36

@SlippersForFlippers wow, I wonder if even the designer thought that was sleek and stylish?!

I'm going to try the thermos cup route. I feel a little sad at the death of my dream and burgeoning reinvention of my relationship with kettle.

Thanks all for your support with this rollercoaster of a dilemma.

My husband just did this!
He loves a cup of tea in the morning so we took our old kettle and put together a tea tray for the top of a bedside table.

I think it's rather sweet

Make up a decent flask for yourself the night before. It should still be piping hot the next morning.

Crapbuttrue · 05/12/2020 21:17

@hulahooper2

Why not move the downstairs machine next to your bed at bedtime , then move it downstairs for during the day
Or you could move your bed down downstairs next to the coffee machine! Problem solved.
Crapbuttrue · 05/12/2020 21:19

@Goingtogetflamed

I admire you OP. I think it would feel too decadent for me (and I have to have milk which complicates the whole affair). Definitely go for it.
I had a spell of doing this but tea not coffee. I froze milk in ice cubes and put a couple in a mug before going to bed.
EasternDailyStress · 05/12/2020 21:26

Make proper coffee before you go to bed and put it in a flask. Much neater on the bedside table Smile

Feawen · 05/12/2020 21:30

@Diverseduvet

Baffled by this really. Surely the desire for coffee is what gets you out if bed?
This!
Branleuse · 05/12/2020 22:59

You can get coffee machines with a timer setting. I used to have mine set to just before my alarm so pot of coffee would be ready for me when i got up

Jenasaurus · 06/12/2020 00:08

@ThatDamnScientist

I think that is a fab idea. I would totally do that except I drink mine with milk so I have to get out of bed.
you could get those little UHT milk cartons like they have in hotels :)
Jenasaurus · 06/12/2020 00:12

I love a coffee or glass of wine and a book in the bath, but going to have to invest in one of those little bath shelf things after my last incident. I have seen one you can even prop your phone or ipad on to watch films while you soak.

I really want one of those but our tap arrangement prevents it. Gutted.

Good thermos with good coffee? The idea of a kettle upstairs gives me palpitations but that’s related to having young children.

tempnamechange98765 · 06/12/2020 13:15

YABU to like instant coffee! Especially black.

Go for option 2, he's offered which means it means more to him to NOT have the kettle in the bedroom.

If you feel like a bitch do something for him once a day - wash some dishes or something.
Or make him a nice brandy to bring him when he's sat in an armchair of an evening, complete with slippers and pipe.

KyraGoose · 06/12/2020 13:16

Tassimo?

MrsMigginsMate · 06/12/2020 13:22

Fully support this OP, what a great way to get a little luxury in your life. Your husband is unreasonable to try and banish the kettle, it's not like the neighbours will ever see in your bedroom to gossip about it, and even if guests do spy the setup it's none of their business! Crack on and cherish your mini lie in with a brew, I'd love to do this if I had space and my toddler didn't get me up at silly o'clock in the morning! Grin

Splodgetastic · 06/12/2020 13:28

Option 2 is fine in my view. My DH always brings me a tea. When I was a kid my DF used to bring me a tea if I hadn’t surfaced. I thought it was just something most men did as most precious boyfriends did it too...

madcatladyforever · 06/12/2020 13:30

I'd just have a hotel type set up, tray, milk in little individual services, tiny kettle. I'm tempted but the cat won't let me lie in for more than 5 seconds after 5:30 am.

Maybe you need a cat equivalent of a teasmade, something that serves his breakfast automatically at 5.30 am (presuming he is waking you for food :) )
SmudgeButt · 06/12/2020 13:48

How anyone can have a coffee, tea, juice before getting up and brushing their teeth is beyond my comprehension.
