Coffee when I wake up.

I would like coffee when I wake up. And I'm lazy. So I've moved the spare kettle to my bedside so I can make my coffee first thing without getting out of bed (I drink it black).

My husband thinks this is ridiculous, the kettle is ugly, and it's all very unnecessary. My usually easy going husband seems to feel quite strongly about this.

He has offered:

  1. Buy a teasmade - I don't see the point it doesn't do much more than the kettle and isn't exactly a design statement.
  2. He'll make a cup of coffee anytime I want one - it's not exactly relaxing demanding a hot drink whilst he trips off like my manservant. I'll just feel like a bitch and end up going downstairs.
  3. Buy an expensive coffee gizmo thing - it's expensive. It's for a coffee a couple of mornings a week. We have a proper bean to cup machine downstairs which I can use when I can be bothered to haul meself (probably after I've enjoyed a cup of instant from my kettle set up).

Aibu to set up a kettle, and possibly small hostess tray for 1 beside my bed?

@BertieBotts

Ikea have this set up in loads of their bedroom mock ups. At least in my local one!
Yet another reason why IKEA is excellent. Maybe I should sleep in IKEA, I could have a coffee and a hot dog?

I'm loving all the suggestions of the new coffee machines, and I will have a little trawl through later. But is no one feeling the tiniest bit sad for current kettle?

I think I'm going to give it a try next week. Obviously if it's crap in practise I'll remove the kettle and never mention it again.

How long would a super efficient flask keep coffee warm?

Whaleandsnail6 · 05/12/2020 08:26

I'm loving this idea! The majority of you would hate my coffee preference... Black and instant I'm not a fan of the posh, fancy machine coffees!

I'd definitely do this if my husband wasn't such a light sleeper that the kettle boiling would wake him up.

Happyface120 · 05/12/2020 08:32

DH brings me coffee in bed every morning. If he didn't, I would have a filter coffee machine with a timer next to my bed- could then be slowly woken by the smell of coffee as a bonus

Edel2019 · 05/12/2020 08:36

I completely support you OP!!!

unicornparty · 05/12/2020 08:36

That would make me feel sick. I can't stand coffee and the smell of it as soon as I open my eyes in bed would make me want to throw up.

Askinvillarblues · 05/12/2020 08:41

I have one of these and it is awesome! Even has a timer so I can come downstairs to a fresh hot pot ao.com/product/6764395-melitta-look-iv-therm-timer-filter-coffee-machine-black-65681-67.aspx

dottiedodah · 05/12/2020 08:50

Maybe compromise with a slimline flask? Either ready prepped or hot water added to an instant coffee or coffee bag as you say .I must say I am with your DH on this one though!Find getting a drink and getting up essential, or would not get everything done! Also my Dog would protest in the strongest terms about just where is her Breakfast!

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 05/12/2020 08:52

I only drink instant coffee, as the filter gives me a headache. I wouldn't mind a bedside machine for that!

Sushi123 · 05/12/2020 08:54

It's not really about the coffee... It irritates your husband. He sounds like a very nice and reasonable person. Would he continue to do something that annoys you?

sashh · 05/12/2020 08:56

Instant coffee is not coffee.

If you want coffee first thing geta nice flask and make coffee the night before.

Grumpsy · 05/12/2020 08:57

I’m struggling with the concept of not just getting up for a cup of coffee. Personally I would not have a kettle or coffee maker in my bedroom but each to their own I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

Right, but the OP likes coffee. She doesn't feel sick when she smells coffee. This is just like in assembly where it's a child's birthday and the whole class starts saying 'I've had a birthday'.

Suitsme · 05/12/2020 09:00

Buy a travel kettle & an aeropress.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 05/12/2020 09:07

I'm feeling sorry for the current kettle. Especially now he's a he! If he works, don't sack him!

I reckon suggest a trial period of 3 months. Your DH can put up with it for that long, and it'll probably become an unimportant part of the background long before the three months are up.

He continues to leave the larder light on. He always puts his dishes in the sink without checking if the dishwasher is empty. His range of cheese jokes are getting rather old.

Are these reasons enough?

Not RTFT but take a thermos up or insulated cup full of coffee?

TheDaydreamBelievers · 05/12/2020 09:14

I'd be concerned I'd tip a kettle of newly boiled water all over myself. I'd go for option 2 - manservant!

mollscroll · 05/12/2020 09:15

Move your bed into the kitchen ?

Nackajory · 05/12/2020 09:16

OP this thread has made me feel all warm and fuzzy as I sip my coffee whilst sitting st my kitchen island. Give the kettle some love, he (or she?) definitely needs a home made resin tray. A cold and dark garage is not for himWink

knackersknockersknickers · 05/12/2020 09:19

Ooh and I love we're sharing photos of our kettles. Like a family album. Here's the rather sad kettle.

I love how many people have morning coffee servants. I have a tea one. Bit of a guilty pleasure but he is happy to and knows about wife work, but now I know how common it is I'm over it.

DameFanny · 05/12/2020 09:21

I've got one of these - www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/household-appliances/small-kitchen-appliances/coffee-machines-and-accessories/coffee-machines/melitta-look-iv-therm-timer-filter-coffee-machine-black-stainless-steel-10158398-pdt.html - on the chest of drawers. It's set for the same time every morning, but stays hot till you're ready for it - so the rare days I can sleep longer I still have coffee straight away.

Honestly, every morning is a gift from past-me to now-me Wink
