Coffee when I wake up.

knackersknockersknickers · 04/12/2020 23:44

I would like coffee when I wake up. And I'm lazy. So I've moved the spare kettle to my bedside so I can make my coffee first thing without getting out of bed (I drink it black).

My husband thinks this is ridiculous, the kettle is ugly, and it's all very unnecessary. My usually easy going husband seems to feel quite strongly about this.

He has offered:

  1. Buy a teasmade - I don't see the point it doesn't do much more than the kettle and isn't exactly a design statement.
  2. He'll make a cup of coffee anytime I want one - it's not exactly relaxing demanding a hot drink whilst he trips off like my manservant. I'll just feel like a bitch and end up going downstairs.
  3. Buy an expensive coffee gizmo thing - it's expensive. It's for a coffee a couple of mornings a week. We have a proper bean to cup machine downstairs which I can use when I can be bothered to haul meself (probably after I've enjoyed a cup of instant from my kettle set up).

Aibu to set up a kettle, and possibly small hostess tray for 1 beside my bed?

@MissCadoganTate yes please! What else have you made?

@PoulePouletteEternellement thank you. I will show his lordship in the morning and see if it meets his visual needs.

Just get a filter coffee machine. I set mine up to make a pot just before my alarm goes off, then I just have to stumble to the kitchen and pour a lovely hot cup of fresh coffee. You can take it back to bed or just veg on the sofa for a bit. Job done.

MissCadoganTate · 05/12/2020 02:31

@knackersknockersknickers it's enormous fun and v satisfying.

I genuinely needed a soap dish so I made a couple, I have a couple of clocks that I've made for friends kids but mostly it's just experimenting and messing about with resin to see what works. I do now have an Etsy store - I simply had so many items that I figured it was silly not to try and sell them but essentially I'm still making things because its fun eg I am making licorice allsorts at the mo.

The trays that I mentioned are so useful. I needed/wanted something to put on my desk (wfh). I've got coasters (home made!) but prefer the trays.

@MissCadoganTate I love those! They're all such happy looking objects. I will start researching forthwith. Do you need a lot of skill or cAn it be a bit of a bodge job?
What's your etsy shop if you don't mind me asking?

Though now I've anthropomorphised the kettle I'm not I can put it back in the garage

exactly Grin ! I've managed to feel very sorry for this kettle that does no harm to your DH, makes you life easier and pleasurable. Definitely NOT back in the garage, poor thing.
If it annoys him (some people don't like a hint f a hotel look for some reason), maybe keep the tray and cups on the table but kettle just behind on a smaller stand - he won't see it even.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 05/12/2020 02:56

I love my first cup of tea, and we’ve had a kettle beside the bed for years. Had to stop using it during the week, because as we grew older that first cup got more leisurely and we were making ourselves late. It’s still a treat at weekends though.

MissCadoganTate · 05/12/2020 02:58

@knackersknockersknickers thank you. I think that's the thing, they are happy yet simple. There is loads of advice on YouTube but I'm more than happy to help /answer questions. I've just done enough and made enough mistakes to have learnt a fair amount.

I'm happy to simply send you something (no cost) if you'd like. htpps://Iwantthatoneplease.etsy.com

If you need specific help regarding what products to buy then please ask. You don't need much to get started and some online shops sell resin kits which provide everything you need to make coasters/trays/or whatever. Hobbycraft is good but expensive. I do tend to use amazon as there aren't local shops which provide stock.

MissCadoganTate · 05/12/2020 03:01

Sorry, meant to add you don't need loads of skill at all. You can simply mix the resin, add colour and then pour it into the mould. It'll take a couple of days to fully cure but you'll be able to remove it from the mould after about 12 hours or so.

KEA321 · 05/12/2020 03:07

Why has it never occurred to me to do this? I am definitely getting a small kettle besides my bed.

FortunesFave · 05/12/2020 03:11

YABU I would very much hate a kettle in the bedroom. It's very Onslow from Keeping up Appearances isn't it?

Do you wear a dirty vest too?

Let him get you a coffee machine for the bedroom. You say you want one every morning but then dismiss his idea because it's "a couple of mornings a week"

So which is it? And why should he suffer an ugly kettle when he's happy to get a machine?

I’ve just stumbled across this thread and am very much enjoying it

Honestly I've never heard of such nonsense. Get up and go downstairs/ to the kitchen.
Plus any type of coffee is disgusting, can't stand the stuff.

LittleMissNaice · 05/12/2020 03:35

What's louder a five year old shouting or a kettle? The former never wakes him

Oh, he's one of those. In that case, ditch him and keep the kettle. Just think of the range of wrapped biscuits you'd be able to store on his side of the bed.

(You could always store him in the garage if he's useful in other ways)

user1481840227 · 05/12/2020 03:38

Oh my god I would love this but for tea...like a little hotel kettle set!

MissCadoganTate · 05/12/2020 03:41

@Jenasaurus that product was linked to already. It looks amazing but is hugely expensive

knackersknockersknickers · 05/12/2020 03:47

@Jenasaurus it's beautiful isn't it! But so expensive. And yes DH is happy to buy it but we have a joint bank account and I'm not!

Lovely DH is very lovely and helpful (hence him wanting to get up early to make me coffee) but he sleeps like the dead and can sleep through anything. I don't want to wake him to make me a drink.

So for specifics for the one who asked - it's for 4 days a week. The 4 days I work. Work is pretty grim at the moment (hence still being awake at this time, decompressing) and when my alarm goes off I hide under the pillow until everything is a bit of a rush. A coping strategy I learnt from a pet Guinea pig when I was 8. I think having a coffee next to me would help ease me into the day.

WouldBeGood · 05/12/2020 03:55

Oooh. Buy the beautiful machine. Win win

knackersknockersknickers · 05/12/2020 04:11

@MissCadoganTate they are lovely. They look like the sort of things you want to pick up and touch all the time! Pleasingly smooth. I am going to get some stuff and have a crack at it. Then shall we exchange some resin?! I feel mine might be inferior.

OP posts:
fuzzymoon · 05/12/2020 04:46

Compromise. This may look neater.

Coffee when I wake up.
Uponmytiptoes · 05/12/2020 05:05

I make a coffee the night before and put it in a food flask (smaller than a normal flask and does't lose heat like a travel mug).
You could make a decent coffee the night before and have it ready the second you wake up. No need to wait for the kettle to boil!

1frenchfoodie · 05/12/2020 05:47

For my husband’s christmas present I’ve bought a coffee machine (Amazon - Melitta 1011-16) for £40 than has a timer feature and filters into a insulated jug that reviews suggest is good for a hour+. Would this work if you wake up around the same time daily? Your DH can go get it if the getting out of bed is the main issue, given his offer to make it on demand.

ThatDamnScientist · 05/12/2020 05:51

I think that is a fab idea. I would totally do that except I drink mine with milk so I have to get out of bed.

speakout · 05/12/2020 06:09

*But don’t you need a wee when you wake up in the morning?
*

My thoughts exactly!
I love a coffee in the morning, I donlt have to engage my brain at all though.
!. Get up.

  1. switch on coffee
  2. Pee
  3. Switch on heating.
  4. Feed cats.
  5. Take coffee and go back to bed for half an hour.

My routine never varies.
