Coffee when I wake up.

I would like coffee when I wake up. And I'm lazy. So I've moved the spare kettle to my bedside so I can make my coffee first thing without getting out of bed (I drink it black).

My husband thinks this is ridiculous, the kettle is ugly, and it's all very unnecessary. My usually easy going husband seems to feel quite strongly about this.

He has offered:

  1. Buy a teasmade - I don't see the point it doesn't do much more than the kettle and isn't exactly a design statement.
  2. He'll make a cup of coffee anytime I want one - it's not exactly relaxing demanding a hot drink whilst he trips off like my manservant. I'll just feel like a bitch and end up going downstairs.
  3. Buy an expensive coffee gizmo thing - it's expensive. It's for a coffee a couple of mornings a week. We have a proper bean to cup machine downstairs which I can use when I can be bothered to haul meself (probably after I've enjoyed a cup of instant from my kettle set up).

Aibu to set up a kettle, and possibly small hostess tray for 1 beside my bed?

I have just bought a Tassimo for the bedroom and wish I’d got one years ago! It’s set up nicely with a tray and a small biscuit tin so all I have to do is press the button 😋

Strawberrycreamsundae · 05/12/2020 06:16

Black Friday bargain from Currys, 60% off!,

Crustmasiscoming · 05/12/2020 06:43

The kettle in the bedroom would really annoy me too, but I can't quite explain why.

I would accept the offer of a fancy, sleek coffee maker thingy and use that.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 05/12/2020 06:44

I want lurker’s boyfriend. He sounds an amenable and well trained chap. Could he deliver your coffee - and mine too - by 0700 each day?

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 05/12/2020 06:44

But what do you do in bed for that half hour?

This is why I need cats. I have dogs. I need to walk them. The whole moment is gone and I’m up

Hellotheresweet · 05/12/2020 06:50

@knackersknockersknickers

The coffee bags are quite drinkable, not amazing but they'll do to give me the kick up the arse to get out of bed.
For this reason alone I would get out of bed.

My first drink of the day needs to be top notch. Puts me in right frame of mind and I’m off.
Otherwise... I just don’t feel quite right!

FrangipaniBlue · 05/12/2020 06:50

My friend has a fancy insulated mug (not thermos but similar) that is designed to stay hot for 12 hours. She makes her black coffee in it the night before and it's still hot when she wakes up!

speakout · 05/12/2020 06:53

But what do you do in bed for that half hour?

I drink my coffee for one thing!
I also check emails, my business for orders, look at the news, chat to my niece in sydney, order a few things online, be glad I don't have a dog as it is pitch black and raining sideways here right now!

Beautiful3 · 05/12/2020 07:00

Yes why not, you have the room so yes do it.

LostFrog · 05/12/2020 07:07

Currently sitting up in bed drinking my coffee which dh brings me every morning. Just go for option 2.

HeyChubbee · 05/12/2020 07:10

You should see the amount of crap my OH has on his side of the bed - I would love it if it was just a
Kettle and mug.

Congratulations on your strong bladder - 2 children in and not getting up for a wee at least once a night is a thing is the past for me.

One question though - where do you fill the kettle - for me using the bathroom tap seams a bit yuk - what if a bit of toothpaste gets on it?

HeyChubbee · 05/12/2020 07:12

And also next to the toilet Confused

Backbee · 05/12/2020 07:14

I would take him up on his offer to make you one when you want one, I am sure after a few days he will be more than happy with the kettle instead!

carlywurly · 05/12/2020 07:29

I say do it. Perhaps with a travel kettle.

We have an air bnb guest room we sometimes move into when it isn't booked - so now.

In there we have a nespresso machine, mini fridge and a tray with biscuits. I feel I'm living the life. This weekend's task is creating a mini bar Grin

whatnow41 · 05/12/2020 07:30

I have a disability, so the trek to the kitchen is a big one for me. I've had fitted wardrobes across one wall of our bedroom, with one set up for my needs. Inside is a TV, fridge, kettle, toaster, iron and vacuum. It's nice to shut the doors and hide it all, but it's also nice to have everything I need right there.

Having a brew in the morning is very important to me, you do what you need to OP!

Ragwort · 05/12/2020 07:34

Option 4 - assuming you have another room, decamp to it and set it up as you like Grin.

Personally I am happy to get up, visit bathroom, go downstairs and make a (decent, fresh ground beans) coffee and then return to bed ... exactly what I am doing now. My DH sleeps in his own room. Grin.

ReallySpicyCurry · 05/12/2020 07:34

Your husband is offering, accept the offer. Mine brings me a coffee every morning. Only problem is I'm slightly dependent on it now (not a morning person at the best of times) so of course we can never divorce

lemonsquashie · 05/12/2020 07:37

Yes YABU

Go to the kitchen and make proper coffee

FleeceNavidadToEwe · 05/12/2020 07:37

I feel all nostalgic now. My nana had a tea tray set up on the landing, with kettle, cups and saucers, biscuit tin. The milk jug had a net cover weighted down with beads. Happy memories of milky tea and a digestive biscuit, radio 4 on and reading an old Rupert The Bear annual.

isthismylifenow · 05/12/2020 07:42

One good thing about my now exh was that he got up early and always made me a cup of coffee. So I had become somewhat accustomed. Fast forward to us getting divorced and I realised how long a kettle takes to boil in the morning whist standing next to it. So I considered doing the same as you OP, but don't really have the space for a mini coffee shop set up in my bedroom. So whilst looking for something else (which of course I didn't find) I found an old plug timer and now my kettle gets set each night to boil just before I wake up. Then I stumble down the passage (no stairs thankfully) assemble the coffee and stumble back to bed with it. That waiting for the kettle to boil really irritated me. I know I could have switched the dishwasher on or something else to fill the time, but who does at at 5.30am. Maybe some do, but not me. I do have a nespresso machine but I can't put the timer on that, so first cup in bed is a kettle jobbie and after that the more time consuming cups follow.

I'm so with you on the next to the bed set up. Who cares if it's not a beautiful looking kettle. I have to assume that it's only your (lovely sounding btw) dh and you who frequent that room to see it.

I looked to buy a Bluetooth enabled nespresso. But in my country they aren't Bluetooth compatible. What fuckery is this? Can't work that one out. The signal is only going from my phone to the machine in the kitchen, not half way around the bloody world. Anyway, I'm digressing now.

AlwaysLatte · 05/12/2020 07:46

I think if my DH set up a small kitchen by his bed I'd forever be involuntarily side-eying it. Especially the jar of instant coffee. I think I'd rather go and make him a decent cup than have that there!

Icantrememebrtheartist · 05/12/2020 07:48

That’s ridiculously lazy!

Get up, go to the kitchen make a coffee, go back to bed. No big deal!

BertieBotts · 05/12/2020 07:48

Ikea have this set up in loads of their bedroom mock ups. At least in my local one!

letsmakethetea · 05/12/2020 07:52

This is brilliant, we used to have a kettle in the bedroom pre-baby (now a toddler who doesn't care for laziness) so YANBU in face YAB a genius.

Cooltalkin · 05/12/2020 08:13

Why don’t you sleep downstairs ? Less of a distance to stumble to the kitchen ,, and your bedroom stays like a bedroom 😂
