Coffee when I wake up.

knackersknockersknickers · 04/12/2020 23:44

I would like coffee when I wake up. And I'm lazy. So I've moved the spare kettle to my bedside so I can make my coffee first thing without getting out of bed (I drink it black).

My husband thinks this is ridiculous, the kettle is ugly, and it's all very unnecessary. My usually easy going husband seems to feel quite strongly about this.

He has offered:

  1. Buy a teasmade - I don't see the point it doesn't do much more than the kettle and isn't exactly a design statement.
  2. He'll make a cup of coffee anytime I want one - it's not exactly relaxing demanding a hot drink whilst he trips off like my manservant. I'll just feel like a bitch and end up going downstairs.
  3. Buy an expensive coffee gizmo thing - it's expensive. It's for a coffee a couple of mornings a week. We have a proper bean to cup machine downstairs which I can use when I can be bothered to haul meself (probably after I've enjoyed a cup of instant from my kettle set up).

Aibu to set up a kettle, and possibly small hostess tray for 1 beside my bed?

Bit rtft op but I’m happy with instant coffee plus love a spoon of coffee mate as a treat (grew up on it.... and can’t get used to ‘real’ coffee!) A suggestion but those Boden flask cups are brilliant at holding heat. Also, I would ADORE a Teasmaid.

Lastly... coffee bags??? What are these??!

knackersknockersknickers · 05/12/2020 10:28

@Doilooklikeatourist

I have a mug of black instant every morning to get the day started My routine is get up Loo Downstairs Kettle on Unload dishwasher Make coffee Bed & breakfast news Suits me fine DH never quite makes my coffee correctly, apparently I can't make his tea correctly either
It's the getting up I have difficulty with (only on a work day, around work place anxiety at the moment, boring, blah blah blah) but I think when I'm hiding in my pit the small of coffee will revive me and make me a better human. Kettle could be transformative.

"D"h is now talking about braking kettle down into his component parts for a project. I feel kettles days are numbered.

I have looked into this too. I am terrible at getting up. Following.

Sproutsoup · 05/12/2020 10:39

I have the Melitta filter machine and love it, but it is downstairs. DH would never be able to fathom it being in our room but it would change my life! I need Melitta to make a mini version.

Thefaceofboe · 05/12/2020 10:41

You’ve given me an idea... 💡

Doilooklikeatourist · 05/12/2020 10:42

@knackersknockersknickers I'm maybe quite a bit older 60 and need to get up and go to the loo , so once I'm up it's ok , and then I just go back to bed
Not the same situation as you , I understand

Blufandango · 05/12/2020 10:46

@MissCadoganTate I know this might be slightly off topic, but did you use special heat resistant resin for your tray? I'm making some coasters next week but didn't think the heat from a cup would be too much for standard resin, but now I have read too much and I am worried!

KeyLimePies · 05/12/2020 10:48

I’m guessing that your bean to cup machine doesn’t have a timer function so that your coffee could be ready in the morning for your DH to nip downstairs quickly and bring your coffee straight away?

I have this cheapo coffee machine which switches on at 6am so I wake to lovely coffee aroma and a fresh brew, then back to bed to read the papers. It’s slightly noisy so doubles as an alarm too (I’m in a flat so hear it from the bedroom).

AurorasLighthouse · 05/12/2020 10:49

The only obvious answer is a bedside kettle and some coffee bags. Which is what you are doing already OP, so crack on! I guess otherwise it's a coffee machine or something with a timer or on a timer switch.

Personally I couldn't have hot water in the bedroom because first thing in the morning I am a clumsy idiot. I can't even have a glass of cold water in the bedroom.

Nackajory · 05/12/2020 10:50

OP I love your acceptance that you're lazy. It has made me feel ok about binge watching The Crown whilst the kids aren't here instead of doing something useful. I've switched to tea now. For some reason coffee is for the kitchen island, tea is for the settee. Not sure why I can't drink coffee on a padded seat....

amusedbush · 05/12/2020 10:54

I need to go to the loo when I wake up so there would be no point in a bedside coffee station for me! I have a machine in the kitchen and I make an iced latte every morning, which I sometimes take back to bed while I go through emails on the laptop. I call it my ‘soft office’ Grin

sashh · 05/12/2020 10:58

To the 101 people commenting about "instant coffee", coffee bags are not instant coffee. They are the easiest way to make filter coffee.

No they are not, filter coffee is made with a filter.

Cannotcope4223 · 05/12/2020 11:00

@happymummy12345

Honestly I've never heard of such nonsense. Get up and go downstairs/ to the kitchen. Plus any type of coffee is disgusting, can't stand the stuff.
The irony of your username 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think I might be in love with you a bit OP

LaceyBetty · 05/12/2020 11:03

I'm not originally from the UK and before I moved here I couldn't believe how people could drink instant coffee (not as popular where I'm from - more filter coffee). Now I can't imagine starting my day without it. Not black, but with only the smallest drop of milk for colour. Would love it if option 2 were a possibility for me!

formerbabe · 05/12/2020 11:05

I got a really good flask...if I make a really hot coffee before bed and leave it on my bedside table in the flask, it's still hot to drink when I wake up

Interesting idea. I might try this!
MissCadoganTate · 05/12/2020 11:11

@knackersknockersknickers brilliant idea, let's stay in touch.

@Blufandango I understand your point but I've always used the same resin. It's more of an industrial / marine resin rather than the craft resin which some craft shops sell. Maybe try a tougher, industrial resin. I use my trays and coasters and can't feel any heat from the cup. Both the coasters and trays are a decent depth. Let me know if you need any further info.

Blufandango · 05/12/2020 11:17

@MissCadoganTate thank you! I'm not sure how industrial my resin is, but I'll give it a go Smile

Brilliant. Shall we live together? Me, you and kettle will be really happy and well hydrated.

Oh I love the lazy. We're not even dressed. But then we are isolating so there seems little point.

In a minute I'm going to set the kids of with Christmas craft and hide in the bath with my book and a proper coffee.

I did something similar to this when Ds2 was a newborn. Well, until he stopped feedings through the night, really. He was in with us, and his bedroom is the room next to ours. I set up a small fridge and microwave, and warmed his already prepared fridged bottles in the microwave. Meant I didn’t have to go downstairs, and he cried for a shorter amount of time whilst he waited, so didn’t wake DS1. It was so much easier and I wish I’d thought of it when DS1 was a newborn.

We had a perfect prep next to the bed when mine were little. I should've just kept that. I could've had a like warm brew!

@Blufandango see how you get on but if you'd like details of the resin I use let me know. 😊

RosePetalss · 05/12/2020 12:00

I wouldn’t be happy with a kettle in the bedroom either, just no need in my opinion. But hey each to their ownGrin

What about from a safety point do you have children who could run in and knock it over? Or you or your husband trip and fall on it in the dark?
