Coffee when I wake up.

I would like coffee when I wake up. And I'm lazy. So I've moved the spare kettle to my bedside so I can make my coffee first thing without getting out of bed (I drink it black).

My husband thinks this is ridiculous, the kettle is ugly, and it's all very unnecessary. My usually easy going husband seems to feel quite strongly about this.

He has offered:

  1. Buy a teasmade - I don't see the point it doesn't do much more than the kettle and isn't exactly a design statement.
  2. He'll make a cup of coffee anytime I want one - it's not exactly relaxing demanding a hot drink whilst he trips off like my manservant. I'll just feel like a bitch and end up going downstairs.
  3. Buy an expensive coffee gizmo thing - it's expensive. It's for a coffee a couple of mornings a week. We have a proper bean to cup machine downstairs which I can use when I can be bothered to haul meself (probably after I've enjoyed a cup of instant from my kettle set up).

Aibu to set up a kettle, and possibly small hostess tray for 1 beside my bed?

What about making a coffee before you go to bed in one of those insulated flasks? I have one that keeps stuff hot for 12 hours.

MaryGubbins · 05/12/2020 00:24

Ignore me. That doesn’t boil the water

quarentini · 05/12/2020 00:26

I have a Tassimo machine and pods at the side of my bed for this exact same reason

knackersknockersknickers · 05/12/2020 00:27

That coffee machine looks ace. I'll show DH in the morning. Though now I've anthropomorphised the kettle I'm not I can put it back in the garage.

Bed in the kitchen you say? Closer to coffee and snacks and further away from my daughter who thinks sleeping is for the weak? We might have a bloody winner!

Noooo! I thought we might have a solution.

I'd just like to add in support of op. I love black instant coffee and can't get out of bed until I have had one (or two). The dh does this for me every morning. He gets up earlier than me. If he is ever getting on my nerves, I always think we can't split up because I would have to get up and make my own drinks....

knackersknockersknickers · 05/12/2020 00:30

I'm pleased to see there's so many other bedside coffee-ers.

Now tell me, do you have a tray to put the bits on. Maybe a little individually wrapped biscuit?

This is amazing. I am in full support of you, OP, and have many times thought about getting a machine for the bedside.

Dogstar78 · 05/12/2020 00:37

We have a Tassimo in our bedroom. Mainly from when we had a dog. My day started as soon as the dog had seen you!!! So I got a nice coffee in bed first this way without needing to go downstairs. We also have a fridge with gin and tonic in our wardrobe....for the evening not the morning, just to clarify.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 05/12/2020 00:40

YABU about the kettle but I am obsessed with style above practicality and would just hate how it looked. However I have a similar need for coffee so also vote for investing in a stylish bedside machine. In decadent days you could refuse to sit up and you’re uusband could make you a coffee from Saïd machine.

However, much as I applaud your lifestyle I’m concerned that if you don’t need to wee first thing you aren’t drinking enough water. How about a lovely glass decanter for the bedside as well?

BrummyMum1 · 05/12/2020 00:55

For me that is the absolute definition of relaxing.

Frannibananni · 05/12/2020 01:05

I think a kettle anywhere but the kitchen is a bit grim.

I think this is my husbands main issue. He wanted this bad boy until we saw the price mymodernmet.com/the-barisieur-2-coffee-maker-alarm-clock/

But also I sometimes like to go to bed early to read and I like to drink cups hot water so I could just keep topping up my drink without getting up.

I think my fluid intake is good but I will review, last thing I need is a UTI on top of this conundrum.

If DH usually wakes after you, wouldn't the noise of the kettle disturb him?

SleepingStandingUp · 05/12/2020 01:17

My concern would be you pouring it over yourself when you're half awake of a morning and ending up with an ambulance not a cuppa.

MissCadoganTate · 05/12/2020 01:21

I think it's flipping awesome. I have a perfect sized wee tray which is big enough for two cups or one cup and some individually wrapped biscuits. Would be happy to send one to you (I made mine from resin). Smile

grassisjeweled · 05/12/2020 01:22

Totally fine. Crack on

You made it?! That's very cool. Is it easy to do? I love a craft project. And he definitely can't fight the kettle when it's nestled in a home made tray.

Oh. Xmas Sad The machine your husband likes is exactly what I was intending to show you.

I too couldn't be bothered with such faff and expense for bedside drinking - even though grinding beans and making coffee is probably the best part of my day. Not being in current possession of a convenient manservant I'm painfully aware that more than moderate illness will mean a kettle and drip filter by the bed ...

What's louder a five year old shouting or a kettle? The former never wakes him Angry

Isn't it beautiful? I was so excited when he showed it to me and then we saw the price. I can't justify it. And I do like a hot water on an evening.

I get the kettle isn't exactly pretty. Ironically it was removed from the kitchen as aesthetically I prefer a stove top kettle. But how often is he eyeballing my bedside table, maybe I could get a modesty screen?!

We have a filter coffee machine set to have a fresh cup for both of us ready the minute we go downstairs. My coffee snob husband loves it

PoulePouletteEternellement · 05/12/2020 02:01

Okay, this is much cheaper, and less faff. And, importantly, it can be used as a kettle as well. Says so in the blurb.

Or, at the very least get a kettle that doesn't hurt the would-be servant's eyes ...

(I don't personally give a fig for all the weighing and temperature business. Generations of my ancestors grew, roasted and consumed coffee without interference from hipster baristas. And I've never owned anything as pointlessly frustrating as the espresso machine bought by an ex. IMVHO a manual grinder and a paperless filter equals perfection. All the other paraphernalia is just designed to portray coffee as something rigorously exclusive requiring a beard and a trust fund for true enjoyment.)

MissCadoganTate · 05/12/2020 02:03

@knackersknockersknickers yes it is easy to do but you need a silicone mould, heat gun, mica colours or ink and epoxy resin. Let me know if you want more details. It's quite fun and satisfying oh and v useful.

Damnloginpopup · 05/12/2020 02:04

I've had a tassimo by my bed for five years.
