Coffee when I wake up.

knackersknockersknickers · 04/12/2020 23:44

I would like coffee when I wake up. And I'm lazy. So I've moved the spare kettle to my bedside so I can make my coffee first thing without getting out of bed (I drink it black).

My husband thinks this is ridiculous, the kettle is ugly, and it's all very unnecessary. My usually easy going husband seems to feel quite strongly about this.

He has offered:

  1. Buy a teasmade - I don't see the point it doesn't do much more than the kettle and isn't exactly a design statement.
  2. He'll make a cup of coffee anytime I want one - it's not exactly relaxing demanding a hot drink whilst he trips off like my manservant. I'll just feel like a bitch and end up going downstairs.
  3. Buy an expensive coffee gizmo thing - it's expensive. It's for a coffee a couple of mornings a week. We have a proper bean to cup machine downstairs which I can use when I can be bothered to haul meself (probably after I've enjoyed a cup of instant from my kettle set up).

Aibu to set up a kettle, and possibly small hostess tray for 1 beside my bed?

I'm not sure if he's a he or she. Maybe he has his own kettle pronoun - hot perhaps?

I have an insulated jug. Coffee stays hot for 12 hours.

Youreadthebabybooks · 05/12/2020 09:42

I have the kettle downstairs on a smart plug and set it up the night before so the moment I wake up I can turn the plug on from my phone to boil kettle so I just go downstairs once kettle ready - minimal effort required x

Sushi123 · 05/12/2020 09:44

Oh, the repetitive jokes aaarrrggghhh! Bring the oven up as well!

tabulahrasa · 05/12/2020 09:49

If it’s just how it looks...

Get a nice box and put it away between uses? You can keep your coffee and that in it too...

hotpotlover · 05/12/2020 09:52

I would let my husband bring me the coffee each morning.

Aren't you worried about having a kettle next to your bedside?

I'd be worried I'd burn myself, but then again I'm clumsy.

RandomLondoner · 05/12/2020 09:53

To the 101 people commenting about "instant coffee", coffee bags are not instant coffee. They are the easiest way to make filter coffee.

(To be fair, the OP started it by saying she was drinking instant, before clarifying that she meant bags.)

Weebitawks · 05/12/2020 09:55

I think I'm with your DH in that I wouldn't like all that extra tat in the bedroom.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 05/12/2020 09:56

for me using the bathroom tap seams a bit yuk - what if a bit of toothpaste gets on it?

You know your domestic life requires improvement? To quote all of MN "You deserve better". That would be instant expulsion of adult or child in my house.

In there we have a nespresso machine, mini fridge and a tray with biscuits. I feel I'm living the life. This weekend's task is creating a mini bar Oh, I would so resent any future guests!

Inside is a TV, fridge, kettle, toaster, iron and vacuum. It's nice to shut the doors and hide it all, but it's also nice to have everything I need right there. I'd been meaning to say to the OP that a kettle (plus etceteras) is perfectly acceptable in a cupboard at some small distance from the sleeping zone.

Downward mobility means I no longer spend much time in well staffed country houses - but I recall in my youth weekending often in a house where a tray of tea accoutrements was left outside the host and hostess's bedroom door every morning by unseen below stairs functionaries. I always intended my life to be like that ...

OP, I'm afraid, having seen the evidence, your DH is right about the aesthetic affront. Acceptable in a kitchen, but the bedside table set-up is a bit 'abandon hope, all ye who aspire to a stylish lifestyle'-ish. I guarantee you'll be getting an equipment upgrade for Christmas. Brew🎄

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 05/12/2020 09:59

Or just put a decorative tea towel over it or something.

RockCrushesLizard · 05/12/2020 10:00

Woah, that was a ridiculously long link!

Ottforlife · 05/12/2020 10:01

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned but get yourself a small Breville one cup. Looks better than a kettle, boils exactly the amount of water you need and no risk of scalding yourself trying to pour as you just stick your cup underneath.

nancybotwinbloom · 05/12/2020 10:04

Can you get a coffee machine like the ones that do filter coffee and put a smart plug on it so it turns on at a set time?

They are not massive either. Plus then you would have a few cups ready for the rest of the morning?

VioletCharlotte · 05/12/2020 10:04

If it makes you happy then got for it! It's your own bedroom, who cares if it looks stylish? A home is for living in and being comfortable , it's not a show home.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 05/12/2020 10:04

Sorry, more ... (Yes, overinvested.)

All of you suggesting solutions that don't take account of the OP's inexplicable predilection for plain boiled hot water as a regular, alternative drink of choice - well ...

The problem with 'willing fellow resident committing to coffee monitor role' would be, for me, that the ritual of creating that first cup of coffee would be taken from me. I couldn't stand that. Communing with the coffee grinder is the way I gather strength and humour for the day ahead.

knackersknockersknickers · 05/12/2020 10:09

I have considered the breville one cup as it does what I want. But it's also not aesthetically pleasing which seems to be his issue.

Hmm seems after reviewing the footage lots are siding with DH. Irritating on many levels. I may have to concede defeat on this one as he's still giving kettle the side eye and I don't want the poor appliance living in that sort of toxic environment.

Anyone need a kettle? Goes by the name "kettle" but you could probably rename.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 05/12/2020 10:09

@OhDearShirley

You drink black instant coffee? 🤢🤢🤢 YABU for that YANBU to have the means to make the horrible stuff on your bedside table, if that's what you want to do.
Completely agree.
MoiraNotRuby · 05/12/2020 10:10

I had a bedroom coffee machine but the pods are really environmentally wasteful. For 5 or 6 years now I've had a bedside kettle. I bring a mug up each night with instant coffee and milk in (shock horror) and it works fine.

Basically your husband is WRONG.

NaturalBigDarkBrows · 05/12/2020 10:12

Why not just a thermos of hot water before bed? Add it to DHs list for evening brews Grin

WildWindBlows · 05/12/2020 10:15

Just take a flask up to bed at night 🤷‍♀️
I used to do this all the time when I had a very early riser and still do it every Christmas eve so I can have a coffee whilst we open stockings at the crack of dawn.

Hill1991 · 05/12/2020 10:22

Have you looked at them coffee to go machines as you can also set a timer on them so it can be ready before you even wake up (if you get up at the same time everyday)

Doilooklikeatourist · 05/12/2020 10:25

I have a mug of black instant every morning to get the day started
My routine is get up
Loo
Downstairs
Kettle on
Unload dishwasher
Make coffee
Bed & breakfast news
Suits me fine
DH never quite makes my coffee correctly, apparently I can't make his tea correctly either

Kokosrieksts · 05/12/2020 10:26

I’d get a miniature coffee machine with capsules.
We wanted to do this, but drink ours with milk so left the idea behind.

dayslikethese1 · 05/12/2020 10:26

Maybe I'm a skank but I don't see the problem with this. Don't see what is wrong about it. Can you have one of those bedside tables that has a little cupboard bit and then it can live in there when not in use?
