Apparently 'it's an lady coat and doesn't suit you'
' I had to say something because it's not doing you any favours'

Why am I upset? It's just a coat, but I've taken it personally. I feel he's insulted me

Probably because I thought it looked nice on and I thought I lioked good in it and I've worn it a lot in recent weeks.
Now I find out it looks horrible on me and makes .me look old?
Wtf?

I'm prepared to be told I'm being ridiculous.

I've quizzed him some more and he says he doesn't like the colour.
Or the shape.
On me.

Then he tried to dig himself out of the doghouse by saying he will buy me something

He completely lacks any kind of diplomacy, but maybe he's trying to let you know it doesn't suit you? Did you ask him his opinion? I think that changes the conversation quite a bit.

myhobbyisouting · 03/12/2020 20:01

To be fair to him I'm pretty sure my Nan had that coat Grin

goose1964 · 03/12/2020 20:05

It's a coat, if you check buttoned costs you'll find most are like this ,the difference being fabric and buttons, very little in design of the actual coat.

BedisBliss · 03/12/2020 20:05

I bought THAT Amazon parka...daughter thought it was cute...partner said I was Liam Gallagher circa 97.

Goatinthegarden · 03/12/2020 20:06

As pp have said, depends on whether you value his opinion or not.

My DH really doesn’t understand fashion and is stuck firmly in jeans and a T-shirt. It takes a little while for him to get used to new fashion trends, I never ask his opinion and he knows to keep his mouth shut. If it was up to him, I’d probably just be in my activewear all day

If you’re happy with your choice and it makes you feel good then stick to it!

Frazzled2207 · 03/12/2020 20:06

I'm not keen, sorry

raspberrycordial · 03/12/2020 20:06

The first time I wore my beautiful buttery soft whistles leather biker jacket I unfortunately had a white top underneath and dh said "see you later Danny zuko" as I walked out the door 😆

Gwenhwyfar · 03/12/2020 20:08

@Howcanwehelp

I bought a three quarter length karki military style coat with eppulettes. I loved or, thought I looked tres chic. My husband asked me if I had joined the German army during WW1. Luckily I ignored him :-)
About 15 years ago I bought a grey coat with a massive collar. It was a nice shape and I loved it. Someone asked if I'd just come from the western front.

I remember a colleague coming to work with her jeans inside her knee high boots - the fashion at the time - and someone asking her were her horse was.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/12/2020 20:10

" "see you later Danny zuko" as I walked out the door 😆"

Not really an insult though.

I had a colleague who used to mix up people's surnames and instead of saying 'he's no Danny Zuko' to mean that someone wasn't that good looking she said 'he's no Danny Devito is he?'

Another time, she claimed the late Mo Mowlam was running in a race.

Ghostlyglow · 03/12/2020 20:17

YANBU. DP often makes hurtful comments about how I look and gets arsey when it upsets me, so I feel your pain. I think men just generally lack tact tbh.

KittenCalledBob · 03/12/2020 20:18

I like the coat OP Smile

fibeee · 03/12/2020 20:20

Does it really matter OP? If you love it, wear it. My husband dislikes plenty of things that I wear but I wear them for me not him.

VetiverAndLavender · 03/12/2020 20:21

I like it, the cut and the colour. It looks warm and versatile. Classic.

Feeling thankful that my husband has the sense to not tell me that my clothes make me look like an old lady.

I'd wear what I like. If he wants, he can show you the one he'd like to buy you. Maybe you'll actually like it and be willing to wear it, but I think it's odd that he cares so much. It's just a coat! Not like you're wearing it to bed and throwing him come-hither looks over your shoulder.

randomer · 03/12/2020 20:24

Be careful very careful saying things like "old lady".....you will be jumped on from a great height.

I think he was unkind.

notacooldad · 03/12/2020 20:25

It doesn't look horrible - he THINKS it looks horrible. They are 2 different things
The main point was he said it didn't suit the op.
That sounds a reasonable comment. Not everything suits everyone.
I agree with what someone else said about older styles can look really good on younger people but the same style on an someone even a bit older person can look dated and unflattering.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 03/12/2020 20:29

Men have no clue , I wouldn't worry !

rosegoldwatcher · 03/12/2020 20:33

If YOU like it buy it. Your DH will not be wearing it FFS!

Although a few years ago my DH objected to the smell of a sample of Narcisso Rodriguez perfume. He said it had an old lady smell. I didn't buy it!

HollowTalk · 03/12/2020 20:34

I've just clicked on that coat and it says there were over 900 viewings at the moment but nobody had bought it since last night. All from here, I bet.

OwlinaTree · 03/12/2020 20:36

I bought a cardigan similar to this once. My DH giggled and said - you look like a gorilla.

I could see his point tbf.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 03/12/2020 20:51

The coat looks comfy and practical. It's got two lovely big pockets - perfect for a bag of Werner's Originals and a rain bonnet. What's not to like?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 03/12/2020 20:57

Werther's Originals!

Pugdogmom · 03/12/2020 20:58

I googled it and said viewed 801 times in last 35 mins.😂. That would be Mumsnetters then.
I quite like it.

Doggybiccys · 03/12/2020 21:02

I do think these style of coats are old fashioned looking as are the high necked billowy dresses but that’s just my opinion. My DD 20 wears them and carries it off but I just look ridiculous.
