Apparently 'it's an lady coat and doesn't suit you'
' I had to say something because it's not doing you any favours'

Why am I upset? It's just a coat, but I've taken it personally. I feel he's insulted me

Probably because I thought it looked nice on and I thought I lioked good in it and I've worn it a lot in recent weeks.
Now I find out it looks horrible on me and makes .me look old?
Wtf?

I'm prepared to be told I'm being ridiculous.

I think that style’s a bit old lady and would avoid. I’m 67.

AgeLikeWine · 03/12/2020 19:04

And the lesson of this is : Don’t ask a man about his opinion on your clothes unless you want an honest answer. Especially if he hasn’t the first clue about fashion. His simplistic brains thinks an honest answer is what you want, or else why would you have asked the question?

notacooldad · 03/12/2020 19:04

The husbands point was that the cost didn't suit her.
Its not that he hasn't got taste or.Men dont get fashion...ignore.
Personaly I'd rather be told that wasn't flattering on me.
Years ago flared tops were fashionable and Dh wasn't keen. He said it looked like a maternity top. I ignored. A week later someone asked when I was due!😂😂😂

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 03/12/2020 19:10

I'm not sure about the coat. Maybe it's the colour. There is an air of old lady about it. Sorry OP. The other colours look better l think.

LadyFeliciaMontague · 03/12/2020 19:11

It’s the texture that makes it look old lady, my DH old aunt used to have one similar that she’d worn for decades

Borderterrierpuppy · 03/12/2020 19:16

Most blokes don’t have a clue, ignore and enjoy your coat xx

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/12/2020 19:25

If he doesn’t normally comment there’s every chance he’s right though isn’t there?.

katy1213 · 03/12/2020 19:27

What does it matter whether he likes the coat? And who made him the fashion guru anyway?

HmmSureJan · 03/12/2020 19:32

@Kissthepastrychef

I think maybe you should just be grateful your DH has been man enough to tell you it is less than flattering and save you even more outings in it. Fwiw I think it's a ghastly coat reminiscent of old ladies in jumble sales. I think he's done you a favour. The only people that can get away with something like that are the very young, thin and beautiful. Because they can pretty much wear anything.
When did it become acceptable to be SO excessively nasty on this site 🤷🏼‍♀️

Aren't you just a peach.
diddl · 03/12/2020 19:34

I had a coat similar to the one Spangly posted.

I'm mid 50s & it didn't look right on me.

Early 20s daughter looks great in it.

Today I wore something more like the "sleeping bag" posted earlier.

Although to just above my knees.

Probably look ridiculous as I'm short & overweight.

It's cream so I more that likely looked as if I was wearing my duvet.

But the temp was -1, feels like -6, so needs must!

ShopTattsyrup · 03/12/2020 19:37

I quite like it ... but also, my nan has that almost exact coat and is 79 ...

mellicauli · 03/12/2020 19:38

There’s a tipping point where clothes that were a bit old lady but chic because of the slight irony and contrast with your fresh youthful self start looking start to become a bit questionable, and the scales tip away from youth. Yes, be upset but it’s not really your husbands fault and at least he told you.

Benjispruce2 · 03/12/2020 19:38

Do you trust his style judgement? Are you bothered? If so, you should have asked his opinion when you could have returned it. If you like it then ignore.

Benjispruce2 · 03/12/2020 19:40

Just googled it. He has no taste. I have similar one and it’s tres chic!Wink

OhDearMuriel · 03/12/2020 19:42

I think it's lovely.

diddl · 03/12/2020 19:48

I don't think that it's the sort of coat that is particularly flattering.

But to me it's OK for a coat to be functional.

I have a lovely wool coat, but just not warm enough for now!

Doe he look good in all of his coats/jackets Op?

berrygirlie · 03/12/2020 19:50

I'm young and I don't see it as an "old lady coat" but I think it depends what you pair it with- it's easy to change the age of an item by the other pieces you add to it, but even if you looked like an old lady who cares? It's chic Wink

PumpkinsandAutumnLeaves · 03/12/2020 19:51

I know how you feel op. A few years ago I bought a long, black flowy cardigan thing to wear to a wedding, similar to the above picture. I thought it looked lovely until DH started giggling. Me: what's so funny? Him: nothing, nothing at all. Teehe. Me: ffs just tell me? Him: well, to be honest... The cardigan sort of makes you look like the Demon Headmaster Grin he wasn't wrong to be honest!

likeamillpond · 03/12/2020 19:51

@BabyItsAWildWorld

I think a lot of fashion is a bit old lady at the moment.

My DH can't get his head around my new love of high necked midi dresses. He thinks I either look old lady or Amish.

I ignore him, as I know I look well cool and he'll get used to it.

Boucle is a bit old lady, that's why it's cool.
You need to wear it with skinnies and chunky boots and tell your DH he knows nothing.

I wore it today with skinned and ankle boots.

In the Winter, I used to wear my boucle coat over an evening dress, when I went out ballroom dancing every week

That is such a lovely nostalgic image!

Mischance · 03/12/2020 19:51

It doesn't look horrible - he THINKS it looks horrible. They are 2 different things. You like it - so wear it and enjoy it.

listsandbudgets · 03/12/2020 19:53

I just IGNORED when it comes to clothes though he tends not to comment.

We once had a meeting with a solicitor about something. I came downstairs at about 7am and he gave me the once over and said " I wouldn't usually say anything but I think that's a bit casual for a solicitor meeting, had you forgotten about it? Maybe something a bit smarter?"

I was still in my pyjamas Grin A fashion guru he is not..

PumpkinsandAutumnLeaves · 03/12/2020 19:54

Whoops, here's the pic

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 03/12/2020 19:58

A couple of years ago I bought myself a long waxed coat. I do a lot of dog walking. I love it. If it’s raining I put my waterproof hat on. Dh says I look like Vera.
