Apparently 'it's an lady coat and doesn't suit you'
' I had to say something because it's not doing you any favours'

Why am I upset? It's just a coat, but I've taken it personally. I feel he's insulted me

Probably because I thought it looked nice on and I thought I lioked good in it and I've worn it a lot in recent weeks.
Now I find out it looks horrible on me and makes .me look old?
Wtf?

I'm prepared to be told I'm being ridiculous.

It’s a lot nicer than those bloody parkas with artificial fur that every woman and her dog are wearing now

😂 I wear a parka with fur around the hood to walk the dog. It’s about 20 years old now. The dog doesn’t wear a parka though.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/12/2020 18:41

If DH dislikes something I buy it is almost always something beautiful and fashionable. His taste is awful. I now use it as a barometer - the more he hates something the more I like it.

Oblomov20 · 03/12/2020 18:42

I like it. But I can see that many people might see it as a nan coat. And I can imagine that it might actually not be that flattering.

CeibaTree · 03/12/2020 18:44

@likeamillpond

Boucle textured coat green, Freemans 75 Can't do a link but it's similar to this one
Ah. It's very much an old lady in the 1980's coat. But that's not to say you don't look great in it! If you like it just ignore your DH unless he is known for fashion credentials.
MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 03/12/2020 18:45

I think its horrid but I wouldn't tell you unless you asked for my opinion. He was rude.

the80sweregreat · 03/12/2020 18:46

I bought a teddy coat last year and my dh hates it!
It's nice and warm , but not waterproof at all.
It's horrible when you buy something and others don't like it. It puts you off wearing it.

VinylDetective · 03/12/2020 18:46

Ah flattering, that mysterious quality constantly sought after on MN which I’ve never understood. Are clothes expected to whisper compliments in your ear when you wear them? It’s a coat, its job is to keep you warm, not boost your eg.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/12/2020 18:46

Is it comfortable? Does it keep you warm? Do you like it? If the answers are yes, then fuck anybody (including your DH) who doesn't like it.

Listen, I've figured out that unless I'm going on a job interview or similar, I'm not out to impress anybody. Most of the people who see you in that coat will be strangers on the street. Do you really care what random strangers think about your coat? Hell, no. And the people who know you and care about you won't care what you wear because it's YOU wearing it.

Them that mind don't matter and them that matter don't mind.

VinylDetective · 03/12/2020 18:47

Ego even!

mintich · 03/12/2020 18:47

@MichelleScarn love your user name....if it is indeed an Office reference and not your actual name!

VettiyaIruken · 03/12/2020 18:48

If it's that one linked then yes, I can see why he thought 'old lady coat'. When I was a kid loads of my older relatives (grandma, great gran, etc) wore coats that really remind me of that.

But that doesn't mean it's not also a nice coat! Old style does not = ugly!

Also, fashion trends go round and round. Wait long enough and you're back where you started.

If you like the coat then wear it. Don't let someone else's opinion make you feel crap.

the80sweregreat · 03/12/2020 18:48

The coat is lovely.

PersicariaBistortaSuperba · 03/12/2020 18:49

I wonder if the people at Freemans will ever know why one of their coats mysteriously got over 1800 views in the last hour when other ones are averaging about 7?

Twickerhun · 03/12/2020 18:49

I like it but then I think the ‘old lady’ look works nicely for me

namechangetheworld · 03/12/2020 18:51

If you like it, and it makes you feel good, then enjoy your coat, please don't let his opinion put you off. He's not the one who's wearing it.

I can't stand it when DH gives his (unwanted) opinion on my clothing choices. I have a floral rain mac that he has declared looks ridiculous, and I wear it as often as I possibly can just to irritate him, but I'm petty like that.

rosegoldivy · 03/12/2020 18:51

Legit just here so see if OP confirms if that's the coat.

I too am one of the coats many viewers haha

44PumpLane · 03/12/2020 18:54

That style of coat (if it's like the one linked) is super in at the minute and I seriously don't get it... They look old and nobbly right form the start and look old womanish and I honestly think that unless you have a very specific figure (and I'm not talking skinny... Just a very specific shape) they just look like you're wearing an old sack.

But isn't that the beauty of fashion..... We all have different opinions and just because he doesn't like it and I don't like it doesn't mean you don't look amazing in it!!

1forAll74 · 03/12/2020 18:55

I like the coat, I had a similar one in the 1960's, and it was also green. I am not saying 1960's as in its old fashioned though, as 1960 clothes were great. In the Winter, I used to wear my boucle coat over an evening dress, when I went out ballroom dancing every week.

DrDavidBanner · 03/12/2020 18:58

If your husband is anything like mine I wouldn't pay any attention at all. As long as you like it and its fit for purpose.
I've got a bright yellow raincoat that I love, it keeps me dry and warm without feeling hot or stuffy (thanks menopause) and has huge pockets!! According to DH it makes me look like Paddington or a duck but hes no Gianni Versace so I don't care Grin

Enjoy your coat, I'm sure you look lovely in it

PinkiOcelot · 03/12/2020 18:59

I’ve said YABU. Purely for actually giving a shut what he thinks.
You like it. You think it looks nice on. That’s all that matters.

PinkiOcelot · 03/12/2020 19:00

Giving a shit!!

FreshFreesias · 03/12/2020 19:01

First world problems

Branleuse · 03/12/2020 19:01

surely it depends what you wear it with.
I think its reasonably nice. I like the colour

Craftycorvid · 03/12/2020 19:01

My ex used to actually get angry if he disliked something I was wearing. Back in the day I had a bottle green oversized coat - very 1980s (which is, in fact, when this was). My chap used to glare and fume silently whenever I wore said coat. Made no difference to me, I might add. Grin. Same bloke once went puce and announced that he was not ‘going out with you dressed like that’ (for the record, in a perfectly average, grungey studenty outfit, not obviously offensive). My reply was to wish him a pleasant evening as I was off out on my own. He’s an ex - did I mention?

DH today pulled a face at my new ‘Oxford bags’ trousers, apparently baggy trousers offend him. Oh well! That’ll be zero fucks given by me, then.

My point is, if you like it, wear it. If you like it lots, you’ll feel good in it and therefore look good in it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/12/2020 19:03

When I was a lot younger I used to watch 'Catchphrase' but I think this 'Guess the Coat' has much more appeal. Hmm
