Apparently 'it's an lady coat and doesn't suit you'
' I had to say something because it's not doing you any favours'

Why am I upset? It's just a coat, but I've taken it personally. I feel he's insulted me

Probably because I thought it looked nice on and I thought I lioked good in it and I've worn it a lot in recent weeks.
Now I find out it looks horrible on me and makes .me look old?
Wtf?

I'm prepared to be told I'm being ridiculous.

Everyone has different taste. Sometimes when I go shopping with a friend (pre Covid) she'll hold something up which she really likes and I think is hideous and vice versa. She likes bold colours and patterns whereas I like neutral, plain colours. Neither is right or wrong, we jusy like different things.

Icenii · 03/12/2020 18:06

If its like the link, I really like it!

Othering · 03/12/2020 18:06

That coat has just been viewed 432 times!!!

nosswith · 03/12/2020 18:06

If I stopped to say something looked bad on someone I would be a busy person. Style ended in the Uk in about 2008.

I think silence would have been the better option.

guffaux · 03/12/2020 18:07

i was wearing black ultra skinnies, black boxy blazer and black chelsea boots, had a wool striped scarf in browns/cream and black- i thought i looked parisienne- and was out and about feeling great- but totally deflated when told i looked like
Max Wall Shock

MichelleScarn · 03/12/2020 18:10

This? Oh no! Did he mean the not at all nice term of 'old lady coat'?

flaviaritt · 03/12/2020 18:10

I have something a bit like that. I definitely look old lady.

slashlover · 03/12/2020 18:10

I mean, I think this looks like someone is wearing a sleeping bag but my friend has similar and absolutely loves it.

MummaGiles · 03/12/2020 18:10

Would you go to your DH for fashion advice normally?

Don’t listen to criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from.

MrsGrindah · 03/12/2020 18:11

@guffaux I am truly guffawing at that!

I thought I was wearing a chic pussybow blouse a la Duchess of Cambridge only to be told I resembled Hyacinth Bucket!

Chaotica · 03/12/2020 18:11

I like it. Old lady here Grin

gingercat02 · 03/12/2020 18:11

I'm one of those views 🤣 it's an alright coat but not worth £75 imo.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 03/12/2020 18:14

Im wondeeung if his morher used to wear a sumilar style?

Well no one here would know that because we have no idea who she is. Thats something you would need to ask him.

I'm guessing you ment he thinks its an OLD lady coat?

TheWernethWife · 03/12/2020 18:16

Nothing wrong with the coat - I wear M & S padded jackets all the time, with jeans and ankle boots. I do have a have a posh black wool coat stuffed in the wardrobe but only wear it for funerals.

Eckhart · 03/12/2020 18:16

Veiled compliment. He's saying you could look fabulous in another coat, but this one doesn't flatter you, in his eyes.

It's like when someone says a picture of yourself that you like is horrible. What's really being said is 'You look much better normally than you look in this picture'

I don't think what he's saying is insulting. I do think he needs to work on his delivery though.

Bbang · 03/12/2020 18:18

I like it if it’s the one linked!

What is a young lady coat? Genuinely asking because I didnt realise the other one is old lady looking. Maybe I just like old lady fashion?

I now have infinite questions and concerns over my wardrobe haha Confused

Eckhart · 03/12/2020 18:18

'It's an old lady coat and doesn't suit you' = 'You are so far from being an old lady that you can't even wear something that might resemble an old lady's coat and get away with it'

RunnerDown · 03/12/2020 18:19

I like the coat .
I used to listen to dh opinions till I realised that I didn’t like most of the clothes he bought for himself. Now I just wear what I want .

notalwaysalondoner · 03/12/2020 18:19

Does your DH have a unusually good fashion sense? If not, he has probably taken a random dislike to the coat - my DH hates it when I wear bold lipstick. It doesn’t mean I don’t look good, just that he doesn’t like it. If your DH is an average man with average (ie non existent) interest in women’s fashion then I’d either ignore him completely or quietly ask a female friend who I trusted if she agreed. Chances are he’s just taken a random dislike to it and doesn’t know what he’s talking about. That might still bother you if you want your DH to like every single item you wear and of course in an ideal world they would, but personally I’ve accepted my DH wouldn’t know style if it hit him round the face so generally ignore this kind of comment.

Spanglybangles · 03/12/2020 18:19

I have this berry number I bought from next last year and yours sounds similar. Mine was under £40 though and wouldn’t have paid £75, I love it though.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 03/12/2020 18:20

I thought I looked great in my new leather jacket (I have issues about how I look) and dh called me Biggles. Not happy.

Can't say I love the coat but I can see it looking stylish with the right outfit.

Omeara · 03/12/2020 18:22

If you like it that's all that matters.

Chewbecca · 03/12/2020 18:23

Could look really good. Could look old lady. Depends how you wear it.

My DH hasn't a clue on what's modern so I wouldn't take much notice of him. I would ask an honest friend though.
