Carrie Bradshaw - A CF, right?

Nikhedonia · 29/11/2020 20:09

She's a pretty self-obsessed shit friend, but a CF too, right?

I rewatched an episode the other day where she needed to buy her apartment and she expected Charlotte to sell her engagement ring to fund the purchase Shock

I reckon if SATC were real, Miranda or Charlotte would be on MN gushing about their best friend being incredible and everyone would be calling Carrie a CF and advising them to go NC.

She's like a masterclass in how to scare a bloke away, always pushing for declarations of love and commitment too early!

Very true. However I was in my twenties when it was first out and I remember my friends and I being exactly the same. So intense and needy and hanging round waiting for the phone to ring. Desperate for the blokes we liked to commit to us. I know MNetters are mostly perfect and well adjusted Wink but I hold my hands up and say I relate massively to what she was like. I shudder being reminded of it while I am rewatching.

Eaumyword · 29/11/2020 22:00

Touche! Me too, god I learnt a lot of relationship lessons the hard way!Grin

Nikhedonia · 29/11/2020 22:01

@Clockstop

It was the bit when she screamed at the squirrel in Aiden's lovely cabin that made me think she truely was an utter knob.
That shriek. That fucking shriek.

The poor squirrel Sad

She was always awful. That was the point! None of them were likeable. The show really went downhill when they tried to make them nice and put them in relationships ugh.

Iamthewombat · 29/11/2020 22:04

I watched it for the clothes.

I thought Charlotte was the worst. Whiny, always trying to get off with rich men, thought she was a cut above. The episode where she told Tre’s mum that she was ‘worth a million’ (pre-nuptual agreement) was so cringy.

LaBarbera · 29/11/2020 22:05

Remember when Carrie got the WRONG SHAPE of diamond engagement ring and actually vomited from distress?

Talia99 · 29/11/2020 22:05

@DressingGownofDoom, SJP was executive producer and had script approval from the 3rd season of the TV show. Any time Kim C’s character was humiliated on screen (her storylines were bizarre) or there were gratuitous full frontal nude scenes, SJP had to at the very least agree to that story line and Kim C seems to be of the opinion SJP was asking for those things to be included with the intent to embarrass or upset Kim.

SJP wasn’t writing the scripts herself but nothing got included if she didn’t want it there. It’s also why it turned into the ‘we love Carrie’ show. As a PP has said, anyone who had an actual friend like CB (or SJP by the sound of it) would run screaming.

TBF Kim Cattrall didn't have to do those scenes did she? Presumably she had input into her character and could have said "I want to tone the nudity down". That was Samantha's character - older, sexually voracious, commitment-phobe etc. How can we know she wasn't totally fine with it until she saw how it was received in those dreadful movie sequels and then decided it was everyone else's fault. We can't possibly know.

HmmSureJan · 29/11/2020 22:11

That ring was horrible though, but Aiden was lovely. I'd have snapped him up in a heartbeat, poor taste in jewellery and all.

ThisAintNoPartyThisAintNoDisco · 29/11/2020 22:17

YANBU she’s horrible with everything always orbiting around her ego and her bloody shoes.

And I don’t know if it’s the name that does it, but there’s another Carrie I can’t abide .. the one from Four Weddings & A Funeral. Charles should have slammed that door and let her trudge home alone in the rain.

Tartyflette · 29/11/2020 22:18

What annoyed me most about Carrie was the way she changed when she was around men --- from straight-talking woman when she was with her friends to coy, girlish and deferential when a man first appears on the scene. She is desperate not to deter him; he is the ultimate prize.

AWaspOnAWindowReturns · 29/11/2020 22:22

@flaviaritt

Can’t bear her.

But now I’m watching Pulp Fiction and CB’s capacity to irritate me does not compare to that of the most irritating character ever to grace a TV screen: Fabienne.

I always felt a degree of empathy for Fabienne. I thought she was shy, mouse-like, and Butch expected her to go wherever like a piece of luggage. He was verbally abusive towards her and I think she was somewhat scared of his temper.

The ring was terrible. Typically dramatic of Carrie to vomit though HmmHmm she could have just let him propose with it, been a grown up and said "darling, love you, cannot wait to get married but could we change the ring? It's not really my taste".

cantstopstressing · 29/11/2020 22:28

FlaviaRitt, so funny, I always found Fabienne intensely annoying. DH and I rewatched PF a few years ago and agreed she was incredibly irritating. I wonder if the directors intended her to be that way?

As for Carrie, I totally agree! I never really got why we were supposed to like her as a character as she was just so unlikeable. Completely shallow, self centred and a totally shit friend.

user1481840227 · 29/11/2020 22:28

Oh yes she had a lot of bad traits!
The thing with the ring was so bad.
Then there was the movie where she blamed Miranda on big not showing up to the wedding!

I read an interview with SJP once where someone mentioned something about Carries bad traits or selfish side and SJP seemed really offended and stunned that people thought that about Carrie lol

HugeAckmansWife · 29/11/2020 22:29

Loved that episode when Miranda loses her shit with them all because they cant talk about anything other than men. She walks out of that place they always have lunch / brunch at (though obvs none of them ever ate in real life 😁).

And I'm sure that apartment would have been worth way more than a million. And the ring was ££££ too.

This does not surprise me. I think she and Carrie might be quite similar. Which is why I found the scene with Matthew McCanughey (sp?) so funny.

@FortunesFave

The shoe thing always made me cringe...where someone stole hers at a party....I KNOW her friend was an arsehole about people taking off their shoes but to make her pay for them!
Whilst I agree that Carrie is a toxic friend, a narcissist and definitely a cheeky fucker she was in the right about the shoe thing. It wasn't Carrie's choice to take her shoes off and the friend should have immediately reimbursed her since she made guests take their shoes off and one of HER guests stole Carrie's shoes plus the friend didn't want dirt coming into the house because of her kids but was fine to let her husband smoke a joint with kids in the house Hmm hypocrisy much. And the friend was fucking cheeky to say to Carrie that she shouldn't have to fund her extravagant lifestyle and offered her only $200 and then had the audacity to say she wore those shoes before she had a real life. Yet it's ok to expect thousands of dollars worth of gifts off people to celebrate her life choices but she can't replace a friend's shoes when it was her fault they were stolen in the first place!

Never thought the day would come when I'd defend Carrie normally I can't stand her LOL I think her worse moment for me was towards the end of series three when Natasha walked into the restaurant where they were eating and she gave Carrie a dirty look and walked out and Carrie felt completely sorry for herself that someone could hate her that much! Then she had the nerve to try and make contact with Natasha who made it very clear she wasn't interested so Carrie ambushed her at another restaurant gave her bull shit apology to make herself feel better and when Natasha gave it to her Carrie's only thought was she was responsible for putting Natasha back on the single's market! That for me really takes the piss no thought for the fact that she helped break up a marriage, caused endless amount of emotional pain but on top of that Natasha smashed her face chasing Carrie away because Carrie didn't want to deal with the fall out and consequences of her bad behaviour! Yes I'm aware Big is just as bad and culpable as Carrie in the affair but seeking Natasha out to make herself feel better is so selfish and very narcissistic!

I also couldn't stand Charlotte! she was so fucking annoying with her obsession for a fairytale marriage and she was so judgemental! Especially of Samantha. The only time I agreed with Charlotte was when she found out about Carrie and Big and told Carrie straight about her behaviour and how she didn't think about Natasha at all Charlotte was %100 right there.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 29/11/2020 22:34

I think she had a significant influence on the writing. There was talk of a prequel but apparently she wouldn't want someone else to play Carrie.

More recently SJP has said she found playing her quite difficult at times. I call BS.

I thought Kim Catrall simply didn't want her couch hanging out on screen when she was pushing 60 so called time on it. And said SJP was horrible to her because she stole the show.

Jumpingjosephene21 · 29/11/2020 22:35

How has nobody mentioned what a bitch she was in the second movie? Cheating on her husband, being horrible to her friend who tried to warn her against cheating on her husband and then interrupting Miranda and Charlotte's heart to heart to cry about cheating on her husband.

She really is a dreadful character and always has been.

PutThemInTheIronMaiden · 29/11/2020 22:36

At last! I've been saying this for years! Most of mine have been covered except I think even more attention should be paid to that terrible shrieking all...the...time.

My absolute worst two were bleating about herself on the phone while Miranda was literally throwing up with morning sickness.

And @GlummyMcGlummerson Remember when she confronted the wife of the husband she fucked (despite said wife making it clear she didn't want to talk to her), wearing a totally slutty dress, and asked for forgiveness shock What I hated MOST about this scene was that she sat down in the slutty frock DRANK NATASHA'S WINE and THEN said her piece. It was all about power and control.

God I hated her character so much!

This is an interesting article with a timeline of the "feud". It seemed to be mostly about money. Personally find it interesting that SJP has never said a bad word about KC or anyone else involved in SATC.
