Carrie Bradshaw - A CF, right?

Nikhedonia · 29/11/2020 20:09

She's a pretty self-obsessed shit friend, but a CF too, right?

I rewatched an episode the other day where she needed to buy her apartment and she expected Charlotte to sell her engagement ring to fund the purchase Shock

I reckon if SATC were real, Miranda or Charlotte would be on MN gushing about their best friend being incredible and everyone would be calling Carrie a CF and advising them to go NC.

I think the show did the worst thing getting Carrie and Big together in the end, after years of him being largely disinterested and using her for sex and the very occasional bit of friendship. How many women watched that and thought 'see, that could be me and my mr big!'

Aiden was the best male character in the show but they constantly slagged him off for not being trendy or slim when in reality he was very handsome and perfectly nice and stable.

feistyoneyouare · 29/11/2020 21:01

I loved the show and liked Carrie at the time, but looking back she was a really self-involved entitled little cow a lot of the time. Especially in the apartment episode - and especially because the reason she had no savings was she'd spent it all on shoes.

The 'shoes stolen at party' episodes is one of my faves, though. OK, no way should Carrie's friend have had to fork over the cost of a pair of Manolos, but she was so patronising and sanctimonious about people who weren't married with kids that it was hard to have any empathy for her either.

Oh, and Sarah Jessica Parker has the most grating scream ever. And uses it way too much in SATC.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 29/11/2020 21:02

Remember when she confronted the wife of the husband she fucked (despite said wife making it clear she didn't want to talk to her), wearing a totally slutty dress, and asked for forgiveness Shock

I loved that show when I was a teenager and when I watch it now it makes me cringe. Miranda is the only likeable character. I liked the way she stood up to her boss about working less for her son, and her housekeeper for enjoying sex out with marriage.
They are so superficial and self centred though. When Samantha starts getting blacklisted for shagging married men we’re all meant to feel sorry for her. She has zero sympathy for the cheated on wife and does some charity work solely to improve her standing with zero interest in helping others less fortunate.
The films were even worse. That street scene (where the Muslim women take off their robes to show the SATC women that they’re just as superficial, obsessed with jewellery and over priced clothes as the SATC women are) was insulting.

DrManhattan · 29/11/2020 21:09

I am not sure if Lena Dunham took inspiration from SATC when she wrote Girls, but Hannahs character is like Carrie but dialled up. So self-centered and self absorbed, its hilarious.

MrsClatterbuck · 29/11/2020 21:09

It's on sky at the moment. They have just started it a second time. Watched the first episode where it showed a guy who only dated models and filmed them having sex with him. Without their knowledge and Carrie was ok with that. I watched it the first time round mainly for the fashion and did buy the box set. It was on sale. Now I just think Carrie is so self centered whiny and entitled. Aidan was lovely and she gave him up for Big. Not sure what she saw in Big to be honest. I binned the box set when we moved.

wizzbangfizz · 29/11/2020 21:10

Carrie was def the worst one, she was so fucking judgemental of them all, particularly Samantha! Only Stanford ever really pulled her up for being self obsessed. Her behaviour with Big was beyond the pale.

If you're going down the route of best man on SATC I think we can all agree Harry is it!

He and Charlotte had the best relationship by far - they made one another better people.

Big and Carrie were tosspots, totally deserved one another.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/11/2020 21:10

"She was Big's OW and she and The Girls had zero empathy (other than how she felt it all made her look) for the wife - including when the wife found Carrie at the family home, chased Carrie out, wife tripped and broke her front tooth out. The marriage then ended in divorce, and the wife was heartbroken."

The wife was a flash in the pan though wasn't she and Big and Carrie was the main love affair of the series.

This thread has kinda made me wanna rewatch it now!

PhyllisAndLucille · 29/11/2020 21:11

Urgggh this show. As dogshit now as it was then. Had a girlfriend who loved it so tried to sit through an hour of the drivel back in the day..NO!!! .Frasier and Will&Grace did it for me.

coconuttyhead · 29/11/2020 21:11

Yep. Massive ego and full of fake humility. Always doing the “look at me doing my martyr face”! CF.

supercee · 29/11/2020 21:14

I started a thread on exactly the same thing a while ago. Loved SATC back in the day. Decided to watch the whole shebang again and couldn't believe how AWFUL Carrie was the second time around.

Yes to the being mad at Charlotte for not offering the money, her treatment of Aiden - 'no it's myyy cake giggle giggle'. Aargh it gave me the absolute rage watching it again.

And breathe.

Nikhedonia · 29/11/2020 21:16

Yes and I actually thought he had a pretty sexy body Blush

Do you know...after watching SATC the first time round and on mat leave with my youngest I think that SJP made Carrie unbearable.

Bear with me...as the show became more popular she seemed to morph Carrie from real-ish person to Uber NY social queen. If you watch you can see her actually posing instead of acting. She believed her own hype and I think it went to her head. She could’ve played her sympathetically but her ego was too big.

That’s my reason for Carrie being a twat.

MaxNormal · 29/11/2020 21:19

@DrManhattan so with you on Girls. Hannah was not only as self-absorbed as Carrie on steroids but she was an utter car-crash.

Ideasplease322 · 29/11/2020 21:20

I loved it for the style and the New York streets.

But the characters were really unlikable.

Carrie was materialistic and selfish. Charlotte was boring and one dimensional. Samantha was over the top and irritating.

Miranda was the only mildly normal character.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/11/2020 21:22

She's an absolute horror, how she had friends is beyond me.

Benjispruce2 · 29/11/2020 21:23

I used to get annoyed with her wearing an underwired bra in bed!Confused

Meraas · 29/11/2020 21:23

I never watched it apart from a couple of eps to see what the fuss was about. Felt like I missed out but this thread makes me think I dodged a bullet.

Iwantacookie · 29/11/2020 21:26

Agree with pp watching it back now I wonder why I liked it so much.

Candleabra · 29/11/2020 21:26

@theelfisfurloughed

I always thought Big was more likely to end up with a Charlotte or Natasha type.

Remember the episode when Carrie finds out he goes to church with his mother, and sulks when he doesn't want to take her, which imo is perfectly understand as their 'relationship' is about 99% sex. And she goes anyway Shock

I'm just reaching series 1 and Carrie is soooo needy in that relationship. The bit where Big is trying to watch the basketball and she's all over him. Then trying to get him to say she's the "One" before they go on holiday. And stropping when he hesitates. God, have some self respect woman!
PicsInRed · 29/11/2020 21:26

Ooof, flash backs to 1981...
