Carrie Bradshaw - A CF, right?

Nikhedonia · 29/11/2020 20:09

She's a pretty self-obsessed shit friend, but a CF too, right?

I rewatched an episode the other day where she needed to buy her apartment and she expected Charlotte to sell her engagement ring to fund the purchase Shock

I reckon if SATC were real, Miranda or Charlotte would be on MN gushing about their best friend being incredible and everyone would be calling Carrie a CF and advising them to go NC.

Charlotte was the only one who didn't and that's what grated on Carrie, compared to how the other two acted.

It why should it have grated on her? Charlotte said she felt uncomfortable about lending money to friends, why should she be shamed into agreeing to do it? And fuck being peer pressured into lending £30k to someone.

Yamayo · 07/12/2020 11:33

Really? I'd feel very uncomfortable and put on the spot in a situation like that.
Not to mention Charlotte had given up work and would potentially have found herself in a long term precarious position.
Carrie was always very patronising towards Charlotte- and v judgy of her life choices.

I've been thinking about this show way too much recently but the one thing that always annoyed me is Charlotte's absent family- she has a brother (who snagged Samantha) and a dad who walked her up the aisle, but she seemed like a real mummy's girls who would have spent a lot of time at her parents' posh house at the weekend.

Also, how did those 4 become friends in the first place?

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 11:38

Yamayo Charlotte got 1 million a year as a condition of her pre-nup with Trey. Not that it would entitle anyone to anything but her financial position was far from precarious! Not to mention a mortgage-free apartment on 5th Avenue.

Was it $1 million a year? I always thought it was $1 million lump sum if they divorced.

Carrie is still a CF to assume her friends should bank roll her though. She could have asked nicely Grin

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 11:42

Charlotte is of course within her right not to lend anything. And Carrie was within her right to feel stung by it.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 11:44

Carrie DID NOT ASK any of her friends for a loan. Nicely or not nicely. They offered.

With regards to the million, as far as remember it's for the year. If it's after the divorce, it still applies because they did divorce.

You need to rewatch the show, she literally berates Charlotte for not offering her the money! She is a CF to the max!
wimhoffbreather · 07/12/2020 11:50

Oddly, Miranda and Samantha do offer to help, but she doesn’t want their money...only Charlotte’s Confused

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 11:51

I did in fact post the exact transript of their conversion yesterday. It shows very clearly what was Carrie's point. It was not about money.

Nikhedonia · 07/12/2020 11:54

And Carrie was within her right to feel stung by it.

Only a CF would feel stung by it. Carrie is an absolute CF.

I wouldn't ever expect a friend to lend me £30k, it's a huge sum of money. And I wouldn't lend any of my friends that kind of money. Especially one that was walking around with seriously expensive bags, shoes and clothes.

And there's even less of a chance of me lending it if said friend rocked up to my house in the middle of the day to berate me for not offering money, just because others had offered it.

Carrie might not have said the words "I expect you to lend me the money" but she bloody well did expect it.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 11:54

For what it's worth I think Carrie would have accepted Miranda's and Samantha's offers of loans if Charlotte hadn't offered her the ring.

I know I would have taken a friend's money as a very last resort. On the other hand, as a friend, I would have willingly offered in the same situation if I could afford it.

wimhoffbreather · 07/12/2020 11:54

Yeah am just going to have to disagree. She harps on about how it’s not about money and it’s about how she should have offered and blah blah their sisterly bond blah blah - but I am with Charlotte on this one (well until she finally coughed up the ring), Carrie wasted her money on shoes and her financial situation is nobodies problem but hers!

Nikhedonia · 07/12/2020 11:55

Because she's a CF.

Nor did she take Big's who arguably could afford it more than any of the others.

Well, Carrie didn't expect to lose her rent-controlled apartment. People sometimes live in those for life. It was out of her control that the building went co-op.

I am pretty sure not everyone here on Mn who is renting can just cough up the deposit in order to purchase their rental. And it doesn't make them financially irresponsible.

queenofarles · 07/12/2020 12:04

Anyone remembers the episode in LA where Samantha buys the fake Fendi but Carrie refused to get a fake and bought the real deal for I think $1500 or close? I just thought about it this morning , that’s perhaps why Samantha can afford to lend money and Carrie is broke Hmm so yes I think Charlotte was trying to send a message to Carrie.

ThePinkGuitar · 07/12/2020 12:06

She’s the epitome of a CF can’t believe anyone would think otherwise- who on this planet would question a friend for not offering them 30k - please!! 😂😂😂

Nikhedonia · 07/12/2020 12:09

No, spending thousands on shoes, bags and clothes whilst having less than $2000 in the bank was financially irresponsible.

OP posts:
Lemononachair · 07/12/2020 12:11

@MandalaYogaTapestry the thing that bothered me about that is that she didn't even seem to try and raise the money herself. There was never a time when she even considered selling all her ridiculously expensive clothes and shoes, some of which would still be worth a lot of money and she didn't even wear anymore. If I was sitting on at least £20k worth of expensive designer stuff you can bet I'd have sold every bit of it before I'd ask my mates or my ex for a loan.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 12:13

Queen Carrie did not buy the real Fendi. She just didn't want to buy a fake one.

And Samantha didn't want to spend $3000 on a real Fendi but then happily spent way more on a real Birkin.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 12:18

Lemon etc. You know I do agree. I am playing devil's advocate here because all people are different and there is no one right approach. Me personally, I would be like Miranda working, saving, playing by the rules and in the end only being able to afford a house in Brooklyn and a bar owner for a husband. That's one way to live, certainly.

Or you can be an air head like Carrie whose light attitude attracts rich men and who ends up in a real estate heaven. And who also has rich friends who love her enough to help out.

Nikhedonia · 07/12/2020 12:29

I'd rather live in Brooklyn on my own dime than be a CF in Manhattan.

queenofarles · 07/12/2020 13:03

MandalaYogaTapestry I’m pretty sure she bought the fendi later , I think back in NY, she showed it to the girls in a cafe and said she couldn’t help it.

As for selling designer bags, from my personal experience of selling Hermes and Chanel bags , there is so little money to be made.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 13:10

Queen oh yes, she had that nice little purse. Don't remember if it was before or after.
