Carrie Bradshaw - A CF, right?

Nikhedonia · 29/11/2020 20:09

She's a pretty self-obsessed shit friend, but a CF too, right?

I rewatched an episode the other day where she needed to buy her apartment and she expected Charlotte to sell her engagement ring to fund the purchase Shock

I reckon if SATC were real, Miranda or Charlotte would be on MN gushing about their best friend being incredible and everyone would be calling Carrie a CF and advising them to go NC.

I’m loving that blog, it’s fantastic

And the Yankee was cute too!

"you don't rebound with the new Yankee!"

Inspired by this thread I've just re watched a couple of episodes and feel compelled to defend Carrie! In series 2 she was a pretty good friend, I've just watched an episode where Miranda buys an apartment enirely by herself (and by the end had checked more single women boxes than her gynacologist Grin - it was a witty show!) and has a panic attack. Carrie is at the hospital and offers to be her next of kin and always pick up for her. She doesn't mention Big at all. In fact series 2 it is pretty great - I think it is dimishing returns as the show goes on with Carrie and do agree she was terribly needy in Paris with the Russian.

formerbabe · 06/12/2020 21:45

I watched the second movie last night...they all seemed so wealthy in it...more so than they were in the show.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 06/12/2020 21:45

She was not expecting Charlotte to bail her out.

At the dinner she said that Big had given her the check and she wasn't sure whether to cash it. Samantha said yes why not, men give, women receive. Miranda said don't, I'll loan you the money, I have half of it. Carrie said that I cannot take you money, you are about to have a baby. Samantha added: I'll loan you the rest.

So two out of three friends offered to help out. Carrie did not ask. Charlotte was the only one who didn't and that's what grated on Carrie, compared to how the other two acted. And Carrie tore up Big's check.

And when Carrie came to Charlotte's house she said that she wouldn't take her money anyway. But that she did expect her to offer, seeing as the other two did and Charlotte could clearly afford it.

In the end it was Charlotte who offered Carrie her ring, as a loan.

This is not a CF situation at all.

Agreed it is totally CF situation why else would she have demanded an explanation from Charlotte? Belittle her for wearing her engagement ring then accepting the money(bullied Charlotte into it) her poor financial situation was all of her own making and expecting your friends to offer to bail you out (and this isn’t a gas bill or a food shop but tens of thousands) even if you wouldn’t accept if completely unreasonable.

Nikhedonia · 06/12/2020 22:49

She's an absolute CF!

Why didn't she sell some of her shoes or clothes to get the deposit? A lot of that stuff would have a decent resale value. She expected others to bail her out.

Going to Big with how do you make money quickly 🥺 it was obvious she was asking him for the money!

Strawberry when did Carrie buy a Birkin bag??

She took on a second job at Vogue to earn more income.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 06/12/2020 23:20

Nikhedonia you think second hand shoes would amount to $30,000 which is what was required for the down payment? Come on. 🙂

I have offered friends money when they were in a desperate situation. And Big was only too happy to help, as were her friends, so I don't have a problem with it.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 06/12/2020 23:28

Charlotte's and Carrie's conversation which explains what it was all about:

Why didn't you offer me the money?

  • I knew you were going to say that. - I wouldn't take it.
Then what does it matter if I offer it or not? Because I would have offered it to you. You're my friend. Money and friendship don't mix. My father and his friend Paul were never the same… We're not talking about your father and his friend Paul. We're talking about you and your friend, me. And for the record, I am aware that I have some financial messiness hat I have to clean up, and to that end, I am looking into some freelance magazine work. I have been offered $4 a word at Vogue. That is a lot. Most people get $2. So, yes, I have made some mistakes, and, Charlotte, you have made some mistakes. When you were making those mistakes, I was sitting across from you at the coffee shop, nodding and listening and supporting you. I was not sitting at a Chinese restaurant, turning away when you should have been looking at me.
Nikhedonia · 06/12/2020 23:40

She wears incredibly expensive clothes and shoes. She has spent $40,000 on shoes and an undefined amount of money on clothes. Designer stuff retains some of its value.

I think she could have made some personal sacrifices to get the deposit together to keep the roof over her head, beyond the vogue work. Even an attempt at selling some of her ridiculously expensive stuff would have been more respectable.

I'm pretty sure Samantha wanted the Birkin bag but there was a waiting list.

Strawberry I don't remember what bag she carried with her in that eposode but there was no indication that it was a new bag.

And it was Samantha who wanted Birkin which was apparently not easy to get hold of.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 07:42

Nichedonia are you seriously saying that if, God forbid, you found yourself in a situation where you were to be homeless in a month, you would do a garage sale trying to raise a house deposit this way 🤨 rather than accept a loan which was prooffered?

I am pretty sure most people would take a loan.

Beefcurtains79 · 07/12/2020 07:53

She is indeed carrying a Birkin bag in that episode, she also has a croc birkin in the episode with Samanthas chemo. Consignment stores in New York would have bought her clothes and shoes for a decent price there and then.
It’s also strange when she compares herself (favourably) to Charlotte with regards to engagement rings. She asks Charlotte if she kept her engagement ring as she had given Aidens back, then looks surprised when Charlotte says she kept her ring, superiorly explaining that ‘zit was too sad or something’ to keep it.
But, Aiden and Carrie never got married, so it’s just the decent and proper thing to give the engagement ring back.
Why on earth would Charlotte give back an engagement ring to a man she was actually married to and subsequently divorced?! Bizarre

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 08:04

Maybe she could raise some money by selling her clothes and shoes and perhaps many posters here would do exactly that when they needed urgent money for house deposit.

Others would accept the loan (see deposits provided by parents here in the UK) and it doesn't make them CFs.

And what would she wear to her new job, in Vogue at that, if she were to sell her good stuff?

MandalaYogaTapestry · 07/12/2020 08:10

And of course, Charlotte did not have to return the ring to Trey!

queenofarles · 07/12/2020 08:32

Nikhedonia I think at this point the clothes in the show were a huge thing, It certainly wasn’t thought of well In terms of can really a struggling writer afford them? They were just things That suit Carries personality.
That Birkin would have cost more than $30k !

The final season, if I remembered correctly!,
Charlottes clothes were to die for! And Carries were too try hard, not to mention the ones she wore in Paris! How did she pack that gown and all those coats in two small bags.
I still think about it Grin

Yamayo · 07/12/2020 09:45

The clothes got increasingly ridiculous as the seasons went on.
Shots of the 4 of them walking down the street were verging on laugh out loud stupid.
If it had been real life the background would have consisted of random people staring in puzzlement.

Even worse in the film. And why oh why didn't Stanford marry lovely Marcus instead of bitchy Anthony?
That was such an offensive storyline. That, and Jennifer Hudson and her 'Vu-tone'
.

Yamayo · 07/12/2020 09:46

Carrie in Paris would have had people asking her if she was in costume.
Hilarious.

Nikhedonia · 07/12/2020 09:51

That Birkin would have cost more than $30k !

There's her bloody deposit then! If those bags have such a long waiting list, one that would undoubtedly be in mint condition should go for close to the retail price.

She's a CF having thousands of pounds worth of clothes, shoes and bags and then complaining that her mates won't bail her out.

I almost wish I had started that AIBU to see how quickly I was eaten alive!
