Is your husband's / partner's personality like your dad's?

I was reading about women choosing partners who are like their dads. Is your male partner like your dad? Or your female partner like your mum?

OP posts:

Dear god no. My dad was a mean manipulative twat. Dh literally couldn’t be anymore his opposite, thank god. He’s sensitive, thoughtful, open minded, easygoing and fun, everything my dad definitely wasn’t.

LandMoor · 27/11/2020 14:13

No couldn't be more opposite. My dad was miserable growing up but very sensible and worked hard and earned a lot. But he never showed any feelings. My DH is fun, kind and showers DD with love but we're both on minimum wage wouldn't have it any other way though!

HmmSureJan · 27/11/2020 14:14

No, it was like his Dad's though, who is an abusive, ill tempered bully who believes The Man Of The House should be prioritised. So I divorced him.

RhodaDendron · 27/11/2020 14:15

No, but I’ve recently realised my DH has quite a lot in common with my Mum!

Scarby9 · 27/11/2020 14:18

My grandma famously asked my mum ( her daughter) on the morning of her wedding day, 'Are you sure you want to marry him? He's just like your dad'.
She never saw the humour in what she had said.
They were alike only in the sense they were both lovely men, great husbands and fathers. Otherwise as different as you could imagine.

Elbels · 27/11/2020 14:18

Yes, even down to the same hobby and working in the same industry. They talk more easily to each other than I do to my dad!

My dad is more socially gregarious though, boyfriend is quieter. I take after my dad in that respect.

PurplePinapple · 27/11/2020 14:19

Definitely not

Seriouslymole · 27/11/2020 14:22

Not really. I love them both dearly and they love each other, which is a huge joy to me, but they’re not wildly similar in interests, outlook or looks - although they are both very tall!

TheFlis12345 · 27/11/2020 14:23

Yes they are very similar, in a good way, they are both lovely, kind men who always put others first, especially me. They have a lot in common and some weirdly similar habits. They adore each other and it’s so touching to see.

Gremlinpoop · 27/11/2020 14:27

They are the same type yep. Both highly intelligent eccentrics. My dad was embarrassing through my childhood now it's my husband. ( Not in a really bad way just querky thinks like cars and hats).
My dad died before I met DH and I have to admit I probably saw the simlerarity and was drawn to it. When I moan about DH to my mother she just rolls her eyes and says " your father was the same". In my case it's blatantly obvious to people who know the family.
I had a great dad and have a lovely husband though so although I know close family friends find it hysterical I have done rather well out of it!
Oh they even look similar and birthdays 1 day apart Blush

littlepeas · 27/11/2020 14:28

No. Completely different.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 27/11/2020 14:29

Christ no. I love my dad but how my mum hasn't killed him in their 50+ years of marriage I don't know.

Anurulz · 27/11/2020 14:30

It's actually more like my mother.. they could be twins..

OneTC · 27/11/2020 14:32

Someone on OLD once told me they thought my beard was sexy and it reminded them of their dad Envy

My partner is nothing like my mum, she's probably quite alot like my dad though Grin

AnneLovesGilbert · 27/11/2020 14:32

No. A conscious decision. I adore my dad but I married a version of him last time and it didn’t end well. DH gets on very well with my dad and they respect each other a lot but they’re very different. I think Dad has started to realise how much he missed of us growing up by seeing how different a father DH is.

CorianderQueen · 27/11/2020 14:34

Nope

Dad - funny, likes a drink, a thinker, sometimes quiet, smarter than he lets on , deeper than he lets on, loves reading, a little anti-social.

DP - life and soul of the party, an open book, adores his friends, open emotions, highly intelligent but obvious with it, a big caring beast who I have just managed to prompt to start reading again.

The only thing they probably have in common is they're both really good at maths.

TheDizzyRascal · 27/11/2020 14:34

No, I wish it was lol

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 27/11/2020 14:35

Nope, and that a good thing!!! I love my DDad, but I'm very like him and 2 personalities like that together wouldn't work. The flaws I see in my dad are things I dislike about myself and am actively trying to change them!

Thrownaway · 27/11/2020 14:38

I would have been very happy with someone like my dad. Dp isnt at all dad like but is still lovely

I think we get our norms often from our family. My dads role taught me to have high standards from a dp.
I think our parents are the closest role models of relationships we have so it's easily to emulate them.
Other people might for example be very used to the stereotypical blokes off down the pub during the kids bed time if that's what they have grown up with

My best friend for example grew up in a sports fan family so expects her men to be sporty, and is used to the idea of dad never being around on a Sunday because of that, kids needing to be kept quiet during matches. She isnt really interested in the matches her self but that's what her vision of a normal family looks like

CorianderQueen · 27/11/2020 14:42

Oh shit, I think I'm like my dad though...

Never thought that would happen, but having just turned 25 I've realised I'm just like him now.

StormBaby · 27/11/2020 14:43

Looks wise, yes. Personality, not alike at all

TheDogsMother · 27/11/2020 14:43

No thank God ! Father - classic narcissist. DH - kind, loving, supportive, caring, non-argumentative.

AryaStarkWolf · 27/11/2020 14:43

No definitely not, he's actually quite similar in personality to my mom....that's much better Grin

MRex · 27/11/2020 14:51

No, but he's like a slightly lazier version of my mum. Shows love by doing not saying, takes on most house tasks without a murmur (even disgusting ones), buys very thoughtful gifts at random times of year, likes someone else to do the planning, great with little kids, falls in with anyone being very friendly but doesn't see many friends etc. Blimey, the more I think, the more I realise I've actually married my mother. They get on very well actually, DH and mum.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 27/11/2020 14:52

My mum constantly tells me I married my father. Usually when DH has had too much to drink. But overall my dad is a good guy and so is DH so I can’t complain really!
