Yes of course I feel sorry for Diana. Yes I think being a royal has a huge impact. But they let young and are now still together and seemingly happy in their 70’s, despite a lot of shunning, negative press, etc.

Yes GlummyMcGlummerson - it seemed like a collective psychosis at the time. Very sad for her family obviously, but the general public breaking down over it? Was very strange.

MythsandSparkles · 25/11/2020 23:03

@GlummyMcGlummerson

I wish Diana was still alive so the St Diana phenomenon wouldn’t have happened - she was as human as the rest of us

Oh now be fair - what she did for the AIDS cause was phenomenal. People forget that people with AIDS were treated like lepers, they were cast out from friends, families, businesses, workplaces, there was scaremongering ride - and she went up and shook the hand of a man with AIDS. This doesn't sounds much but at the time it was incredible. She changed the narrative around AIDS.

Her work around removing landmines has also saved thousands of lives.

This was all done after she was married, she didn't have to but she did.

Totally agree - she did some amazing work.

But the general sainthood of Diana post death is astonishing, for some people just the mention that she might have been less than perfect is blasphemy.

She was just like the rest of us, she did some great things, some goods things and some bad things, she was human.

Nottherealslimshady · 25/11/2020 23:03

I wish Diana was still alive so the St Diana phenomenon wouldn’t have happened - she was as human as the rest of us.

That was the point, she was actually human. The rest are like some distant relative of our species. That's why I love Harry and he's so much like his mum, he really needed her in his life, bless him.

Applesonthelaw has it in a nutshell - taps nose.... know a former employee of the royal household who had career change just before the shit hit the fan as was such a toxic environment.

I think Camilla's "one" was APB and not Charles - they're just making the best of the corner they painted themselves into with their sordid shenanigans. I'd say they deserve one another though.

GabsAlot · 25/11/2020 23:05

I'll remember this thread when someone comes on saying my dh has had affair with the love of his lifeHmm

veeeeh · 25/11/2020 23:05

The new pair seem to only meet up for publicity pics. Separate houses and all that. But who cares? I suppose the taxpayer that is funding this charade does. Think again about that now and then.

Cygne · 25/11/2020 23:06

The whole thing about the flowers outside Kensington Palace was ridiculous. All those beautiful flowers being left to rot away inside the cellophane, most buried under loads more rotting bouquets. It was the reverse of respectful.

AnotherNameForChristmas · 25/11/2020 23:06

True love was Edward and Wallace - he gave up the throne to have his woman. Charles wanted to be king and have the mistress. I'm sure Andrew would have stepped up

Yikes! Andrew as the next king, and then Queen Beatrice to follow... no thank you!

BilboBercow · 25/11/2020 23:07

Most of the Royal family seem like cold, very detached people. I'm not sure their "love" bears much similarity to ours.

ancientgran · 25/11/2020 23:08

Pretty sure I read an interview a few years ago where it was explained that she likes to have her family and grandchildren around the place a lot and he isn't so fussed, like his books and his gardening and of course has his engagements ect to attend to and so they live apart some of the time and together at each others houses some of the time. I know a couple like that, millionaires of course, he wants to live in a city so has a nice house, she wants to live in the country so has a beautiful historic house in lovely grounds. They seem happy, enjoy the time they have together.

I also know a couple who met when they were nextdoor neighbours, she told me it was the perfect relationship, they had a gate in the garden fence so just nipped in and out when it suited them and time to themselves when they wanted it.

Noddyandbiggerears · 25/11/2020 23:09

@GabsAlot but it would go more like this
“Dh (hrh) has been having an affair with a woman he’s known since he was 18. I’m not happy and have been seeing our riding instructor for a few years. Wwyd”

And everyone would say “well you’re not well suited - divorce”

They seem like nice people.

Vintagevixen · 25/11/2020 23:09

Think Kings have been being kings AND having their mistresses (or masters!) since time immemorial TBH, Any monarch who sticks to his wife is probably the exception to the rule!

GarlicSoup · 25/11/2020 23:10

Hold on a mo. It’s my understand that there was actually nothing to stop them getting married when they were young, however allegedly Charles dithered about so long that she got fed up and married APB. I have no sympathy for either of them, they were considerably older and far more worldly wise than Diana and she was treated appallingly. Shame on them, I really hope the Queen lives for many years yet, but that the Crown should then be passed on to William. I doubt very much that Charles would let that happen though mores the pity. Let’s face it if the Queen lives to the same age as her Mother, Charles will be 80 and William 46. I would much rather have W + C as King and Queen rather than a couple of Octogenarians.

veeeeh · 25/11/2020 23:10

Why do we care about these people at all?

Answers on a postcard please ha ha!

Genevieva · 25/11/2020 23:12

I think Charles and Camilla make a good couple. I have seen them at a couple of public engagements and was really impressed by the way they interacted with everyone with warmth and good humour. Camilla has a fun charisma and Charles is sincere in his praise.

Having said all that, if it hadn't been for the Bashir interview, I don't think Charles and Diana would have divorced. The interview took place at the height of her emotional torment. By the time their divorce was finalised they were getting on much better and were actually enjoying each other's company again. It is easy to forget, but they did share a sense of humour and Charles never criticised or said anything negative about Diana in public.

TatianaBis · 25/11/2020 23:12

30 year old man manipulates 19 year old into marrying him he doesn’t love to please his family while carrying on shagging his mistress. WWYD?

I’d punch him in the face personally.

Vintagevixen · 25/11/2020 23:13

Agreed! Can you tell i'm not a monarchist...

ballsdeep · 25/11/2020 23:13

@Cygne

Charles wanted to be king and have the mistress. I'm sure Andrew would have stepped up.

I suspect that, if we had reached that point, they would have altered the rules of succession considerably earlier so as to put Anne in pole position.

Imagine Andrew the perv as king? He'd probably be too busy sweating and eating in pizza express to do any kind of job. Or touching up under age girls.
Genevieva · 25/11/2020 23:14

@GarlicSoup I am no expert but I was told that he was sent off to Australia and her parents thought she wasn't posh enough to be have a serious prospect of being spouse material to the future king, so they encouraged her to forget him.

Nomoreboobs · 25/11/2020 23:14

I watching this now on The crown..Charles doesn’t seem that bad? My mum always says he’s a horrible man

ancientgran · 25/11/2020 23:14

I remember all the flower laying at Kensington palace, saint Diana nonsense, never bought into it even at the time. I thought the worst thing was the way those Diana worshippers treated William and Harry. Two kids having to talk to loons outside Kensington Palace when they could have been with Granny at Balmoral away from all the madness but of course that didn't suit them, they wanted to see the kids suffer.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 25/11/2020 23:15

I remember mourners clinging to the boys and behind their eyes our - the boys who were 13 and 15 IIRC, we're comforting these strangers about their mum. I can't even look back without feeling sick about this. Poor lads.
Noddyandbiggerears · 25/11/2020 23:17

I was 17 when Diana died and remember the craziness of the day of the funeral. I also remember having a CD which was bought out especially - it was a very weird time.
