Yes of course I feel sorry for Diana. Yes I think being a royal has a huge impact. But they let young and are now still together and seemingly happy in their 70’s, despite a lot of shunning, negative press, etc.

But joking apart, and whilst it's hilarious reminiscing about those awful times, Diana grew up in an era when her expectations were way different from how ours are now when we contemplate what has come to pass between Camilla and Charles. Really she had her formative years fifty years ago or more. It's all so very very different for women and their marriages now.

I used to read Country Life in the dentist and doctors and halfway through would be a picture of a debutante. I think it's still ongoing but no 'coming out' I don't think.
Here is Princess Anne with her Country life picture.

Times were very different, would love to say more, but it's a bit outing and no I'm not a debutante Grin

Actually from the 1950s there were many socialite and upper middle class girls who were top models, like Barbara Goalen, Fiona Campbell-Walter, Veruschka, Penelope Tree and Celia Hammond. It was only from the 1960s with the huge change in fashion that more working class models like Twiggy broke through.

@LadyEloise

Jane Fellowes was 21 and Sarah Mc Corquodale was 25 when they got married.
And still married I believe. Neither of them shrinking violets I would suggest. A lot of those aristocratic women now run stately homes. For example the Duchess of Devonshire. I think it's a mistake to generalise

Gosh that's so interesting. I guess until Edwardian times or the twenties these girls would have been known as society "beauties". And not earned anything, but just been celebs of their time. I guess the 2nd world war, with the revolution it caused in employment for women, allowed these people to come forward and earn money for their roles, also maybe the gradual impoverishment of the landed gentry. So fascinating.

At university I came back from my Christmas holidays and told my boyfriend that a friend of mine from home had 'come out'. He was from South Carolina and assumed I was talking about cotillions.

Yes, and once again I was shocked to see this at Bar School in 1989. One or two girls were well known to be studying for the Bar for the pure purpose of finding a high up judge to marry. I just did not believe the gossip I heard then but then they went on to do exactly that and dumped their training.

There was a nastier side to that coin. A pupil barrister friend of mine went on circuit as a Judge's Marshall: on Day 1 the judge made it very clear to her that the expectation was that she would sleep with him. The rest of the circuit was incredibly awkward after she made it equally clear that that wasn't going to happen, and the judge refused to give her any sort of reference afterwards.

oh for definite. It was a total nightmare. For all I know it still is. Of course that is why we know the Secret Barrister is male as he never mentions that aspect of life practising the criminal law. Sexual harassment from start to finish.

Camilla was sleeping with Charles , Andrew PB & heaven knows who else. Chose Andrew had children with him and continued to sleep around.
Hardly a genuine way to be have !
Meanwhile Charles gets married & Camilla still continues to sleep with him , putting self before 4 children’s happiness.
I don’t see a love story just selfish narcissistic behaviour from a pair of .....!
