To think Christmas bedding is a waste.

Aibu to think Christmas bedding is a waste of money and space? Let's face it its only going to be on for a few weeks max each each.
Dc want some and tbh I'm tempted given the shitty covid year we have had, tempted to go full on Santa's Grotto but the other bit of me thinks.... More clutter.... More money that could go on better things.... But what's better than sharing a bit of joy with the kids in a fairly joyless year Confused

@OverTheRubicon

Yanbu. And all the people talking about how it was only £12 are missing the point on the massive amount of fresh water waste and environmental damage going to new cotton that's worn for less than a month a year...
Is it going to be cotton though for £12?
LynetteScavo · 24/11/2020 17:28

One of my pet hates is Christmas bed covers. Not that I actually ever see anybody else's, because I don't go into their bedroom, but I do stare at in in fascination in a shop sometimes. But then, I have only white bed linen on my bed, and don't want to sleep under a pattern. Also I don't want to comprise on the thread count for a whole month of the year. And I'm short on storage space. For so many reasons it's a no from me.

Some people enjoy their Christmas bedding and will reuse it for years others will send it to the charity shop by the end of January.
Some people will reuse their Christmas decorations until they literal fall apart. Others change the colour scheme every year and so buy new stuff.
In the same way someone might have the same sofa for 20 years and someone else changes theirs every few years when they fancy a colour change
In the great scheme of things Someone having a christmas bedding set Is not something i can get that worked up over.

Oldraver · 24/11/2020 17:36

I've been using DS's £15 set for nearly 10 years, he's 14 and still wants it on

So no kit a waste

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/11/2020 17:37

In general I’d agree, but that didn’t stop me buying a set for little Gdcs when they came here for Christmas. They share a double sofa bed here, so the bright red Father Christmas set can’t even be taken home to use on their bunk beds.

But sod it, they’re little for so short a time.

I’d never buy it for adult beds, though. Quite apart from anything else, where do people store all this stuff? Do they all have huge houses?

Lilliarna · 24/11/2020 17:42

There would be a set on the bed anyway. What difference does it make if it's a Christmas set or an ordinary one? Not many people have just one set so this argument is moot.

Proudboomer · 24/11/2020 17:44

I would class the ones with stags on as tacky for adults. The carton styles ones are tacky but for a child they are bright and cheerful and would add to the Christmas excitement.
If I was choosing for me then

Or

But then I like dogs and polar bears

Bubblemonkey · 24/11/2020 17:44

I had my Christmas bedding on when we moved last July 😁

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/11/2020 17:49

I feel the same OP. I will admit to having a Christmas pyjamas that I wear year round. Couldn't resist the sales last year

Same here!

I love my robins in their Santa hats, and they're nice and warm - any hint of a cool night and on they go!

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 24/11/2020 17:54

Complete waste of time, money and environmental resources. I only realised a couple of years ago that this had become a thing. Yet another way to get people to spend money pointlessly at Christmas time.

TheRubyRedshoes · 24/11/2020 18:01

Yes we have some and it gets used for about 2 months.
That rests the other bedding.

Well all bedding will wear out eventually. Each sheet or duvet cover will last xthousand washes.

By having Christmas bedding to use five weeks a year, or winter bedding to use three months a year, it’s just another set in the rotation, albeit for a limited portion of the year, and all the bedding in the house will last longer because of it.

OFC, that only works if you do the “right” thing and use things until they start to disintegrate. We should all be doing that though.

stschiap · 24/11/2020 18:10

I just got some wintery bedding and I love it. It has lifted my mood so much. It's reversible too so has a checked partner on the other side for other times of the year.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 24/11/2020 18:10

DH & I and DS14 all have lovely flannelette Christmas bedding that I put on at the beginning of December (obvs it get washed during that time!)

I love my bedding with little robins all over it!

Sparklingbrook · 24/11/2020 18:11

What's the difference between flannelette and brushed cotton? Is it the same thing? I only like bedding to be smooth. Grin

AintPageantMaterial · 24/11/2020 18:21

I do change all the cushions on my sofas every year on 1st December. This is not because I love Christmas decorations and am full of festive joy. It’s because my children are older and although we all still like the house to look Christmas-y, nobody helps much (especially not when it comes to taking them down).
I put Christmas cushions on every sofa and hang a wreath on every internal door. It takes less than half an hour to put them up and take them down. Lazy girls dream.

orangenasturtium · 24/11/2020 18:23

Not necessarily. You need at the very least 3 sets of bedding, one on, one in the wash and one for emergencies. If the Christmas bedding doubles up as the emergency bedding, it isn't wasteful.

notafanoftheman · 24/11/2020 18:27

Count me with the Scrooges. Not as bad as «my first Christmas» onesies and comedy jumpers but I’m not generally up with pointless consumption and buying stuff -made with slave labour to celebrate peace and goodwill to all men.

TatianaBis · 24/11/2020 18:33

Flannelette is very Victoria Wood bless her.

Farewelltoqualms · 24/11/2020 18:33

Each to their own! I am honestly quite impressed by people who are organised enough to sort this sort of thing. I find the food, presents, decorations etc enough to sort out and don't seem to have the head space for anything else. Clean bedding that is changed relatively frequently is as much as I seem to be able to manage. I think they might be quite fun if you are a small child though.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 24/11/2020 18:34

I make my own, in between crocheting my own Tampax and whipping myself with birch.

aphrodites · 24/11/2020 18:35

Everything non-essential will be considered a waste by someone somewhere. It's the overall picture of consumption surely, I'm sure many more people are into fast fashion then are into Christmas bedding.

The ethical question is also disingenuous, the proportion of clothes which are made under decent conditions are very small and the chain is very long, as many high end brands use cheap labour and source their cotton from dubious places.

user1487194234 · 24/11/2020 18:36

I love ours
Is on for about 4 weeks, changed weekly
2 duvet covers and pillow cases each
Cheers me up no end and want it more not less each year
But it's not compulsory

didireallysaythat · 24/11/2020 18:36

DS1 and DS2 have Xmas duvets (8 years in a row) - we don't have new Xmas themed pyjamas, 1st Dec boxes or Christmas Eve boxes so I don't feel bad about it.
