Aibu to think Christmas bedding is a waste of money and space? Let's face it its only going to be on for a few weeks max each each.
Dc want some and tbh I'm tempted given the shitty covid year we have had, tempted to go full on Santa's Grotto but the other bit of me thinks.... More clutter.... More money that could go on better things.... But what's better than sharing a bit of joy with the kids in a fairly joyless year Confused

I'm the sort of person who would use it throughout the year anyway, no one else is going to see it except me and the family 🙂

NotEnoughTime · 24/11/2020 15:32

I have Christmas bedding which comes out on the 1st December every year along with the Christmas toilet roll and Christmas kitchen roll

megletthesecond · 24/11/2020 15:33

I thought that. But then I caved in and bought Xmas duvets last year. They're cotton and they'll get 20+ years out of them.
At least it gets them to change their beds willingly once a year Hmm.

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2020 15:33

Yeah I’m with you op. I don’t see it the same as decorations and just couldn’t bring myself to waste money on things like Xmas bedding, crockery, pyjamas etc. I’d rather spend the money on something nice that I’d get more use from.

Sparklingbrook · 24/11/2020 15:34

@Sgtmajormummy

Couldn’t you justify this? It’s what DC1 had for at least three months of the year.
To me that's tartan bedding-not Christmas bedding IYKWIM.

It may be very boring me having the same cream/grey v high thread count bedding all year round, but wouldn't want to swap it for something uncomfortable for a month.

MikeUniformMike · 24/11/2020 15:34

I have a winter one. Only for the coldest months as it's thick brushed cotton. It was from John Lewis.

peboh · 24/11/2020 15:35

Yanbu to think for yourself they're a waste of money. For me, it makes me happy when my Christmas bedding comes out! Once the festive season is over it gets put into a cubby hole with all the other stuff I don't need regularly (Christmas decs, big suitcases, kids toys that aren't in rotation)

VivaMiltonKeynes · 24/11/2020 15:37

I love it and they are so reasonable now .

VivaMiltonKeynes · 24/11/2020 15:40

[quote QueenOfPain]It’s all that cheap sweaty polyester stuff as well, couldn’t think of anything worse, tbh Envy

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 24/11/2020 15:46

@UnicornPug

My husband said I couldn’t buy Christmas bedding about 6 years ago. I bought it anyway, put it on our bed and said nothing. He did not comment for over 3 weeks. This year, he was the one rooting about in the loft to find it and it’s on the bed already. Grin The kids have it too and none of it is tasteful. It’s full on, Christmas agogo nonsense and we all love it. Different strokes!
Same in our house Grin

If you have the storage space and the money why not? It such a large piece of decoration and cheerful?

FWIW I wouldn't but any because of storage -- already have 4 summer quilts and 4 winter duvets to alternate but I still like the idea.

DontBeShelfish · 24/11/2020 15:48

@MaskingForIt

Aibu to think Christmas bedding is a waste of money and space? Let's face it its only going to be on for a few weeks max each each.

I suspect the kind of people who have Christmas bedding aren’t the kind of people who care about waste or their environmental impact.

But what's better than sharing a bit of joy with the kids in a fairly joyless year

Yeah, what’s more joyous than creating more waste? I really hope my children grow up in a world with depleted resources and live among rubbish tips. Ah never mind, we’ll just dump it all in some brown people’s country.

I am mindful of waste. I have Christmas bedding. The first set we've had for five years and once teen DSD has finished with it, I'll probably keep it for myself. DD has toddler bedding which will serve her for at least the next four or five years and then I'll sell it or pass it on, depending on condition. I do absolutely appreciate your point but it's not fair to imply that everyone who has Christmas bedding is a wasteful NIMBY.
Bluesheep8 · 24/11/2020 15:49

I think I may have been living under a stone as I didn't even know Christmas bedding was a thing

Neither did I. Christmas jumpers are hideous enough imo but bedding? That's a whole new level Confused

mogtheexcellent · 24/11/2020 15:51

We have winter bedding so get more use out of it. Its brushed cotton so nice and cosy. DD has a set MIL bought that is for christmas week only. I wouldnt have bothered personally.

draughtycatflap · 24/11/2020 15:57

I had no idea this was even a thing until today!

To think Christmas bedding is a waste.
lakesidewinter · 24/11/2020 15:57

I suspect the kind of people who have Christmas bedding aren’t the kind of people who care about waste or their environmental impact.

I suspect that the kind of people who judge people on the basis of no evidence what so ever must be very ineffective at assessing environmental impact.
Rushing to uninformed judgment not being a particularly lauded scientific method.
( Their baseless sanctimony maybe helps keep them warm during the long cold winter nights however)

orangenasturtium · 24/11/2020 16:00

You can buy a polycotton single bed set for a tenner or a pure cotton one for £15-20. If you use it every day in December for 10 years, that is a cost of 3p a day, 6p a day if you don't want to wash and dry in a day so need a spare set. That's not much if it will give your kids joy and if you can afford it.

My very lovely high thread count sheet has just gone into holes after 2 years Sad So that's a 12 month use lifespan (rotating 2 sets). If you use the Christmas set for 1 month for 10 years, that is about the same level of use so it isn't too wasteful from an environmental point of view. Plus, if they are still in good condition, your DC might want to pass them on to their own kids in the future - a nice family tradition and childhood memory to share.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 24/11/2020 16:00

I had guests staying over last Christmas and instead of my usually demure and reasonably tasteful guest room I bought Christmas covers and other naff adornments.
It went down a treat. I think people secretly love a bit of Christmas kitsch.

Notemyname · 24/11/2020 16:01

It's a waste. We bought both DC matching Christmas theme pyjamas last year as a one off as they saw them in the supermarket. DD asked this morning when she would get new ones as hers are too small for this year. We've recently bought them both new pj so I said we don't need more. She was disappointed and I felt bad, but I also think it's a waste. So she won't be getting bedding either!

AlwaysLatte · 24/11/2020 16:04

We usually reuse the same ones each year but this year my oldest has a double so I had to buy new ones. This time I got fleecy ones with glow in the dark stars and some with polar bears on - both could be seen as wintery rather than Christmassy (the last ones had Father Christmas on them) so I think we'll get more use out of these.

blubberball · 24/11/2020 16:04

I'm a sucker for Christmassy things. I don't have decorations up yet, but in December I love Christmas music, films, bedding and lights. I don't go as Christmas crazy as some people, but I find the bedding really cute and can't wait to get it out again. Sad I know!

Ginnymweasley · 24/11/2020 16:06

So when my dd was a toddler we bought her some xmas bedding for her toddler bed it cost 12 quid. She used it for 2 years and now my ds is using it. This year will be the 4th year it is used. It's used for the whole month of December (washed of course), I imagine it will be used for another 3 years. It keeps well as its only used 1 month a year. I just fold it up and put it away with the rest of the xmas decorations. She now has a set for her single bed which I'm sure will be used for years to come as well. It's a bit of fun and takes up no more space than other decorations.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 24/11/2020 16:07

DD’s festive bedding for has penguins on one side and snowflakes in the other. It’s more blue /white/ silver themed and festive enough without looking like Christmas only bedding. It’s a nice cosy flannel fabric too. We use it on rotation throughout winter. She now also has a set of the teddy fleece bedding so will pretty much rotate them November - March.
I have a nice cosy bed set in tartan that I use as my festive bedding but it’s really ok to use all year round.
So yeah I say go for it but maybe get something that looks wintery without necessarily being all Santa and reindeer.

Duckwit · 24/11/2020 16:09

Christmas bedding?

I am supposed to be doing Christmas bedding now?!

I have never heard of this!

FuzzyPenguin · 24/11/2020 16:09

I love my DS’s Christmas bedding it’s the grinch and goes on from the middle of November to middle of January so we get a good couple of months out of it each year. Have also been know to put it on in an emergency as well. I won’t buy anymore and see it as just as much as a waste then any other Christmas decoration
