Aaagr.

It started with buffalo cauliflower wings😔
There are no wings on cauli! It doesn't remotely taste like wings either! It's BUFFALO CAULIFLOWER BITES. (Which are really nice btw)

Then the Jackfruit Pulled Pork.
No. There is NO pork.
It's "pulled jackfruit" if anything. Liers.

And to top it off... Chickpe tuna. The hell, people😔 The hell... It hasn't even passed tuna anywhere in its existence.
It's CHICKPEA spread or something. No tuna. Bad people.

Liessssss. Why can't food be just called what it is🤦 There is just no need for all them liessssssssss.

I really don't understand why if one is vegetarian/vegan why one wants food names after various meats.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 19:39

Oh. It looks like HotDog actually wasn't a lie👀
The term dog has been used as a synonym for sausage since the 1800s, possibly from accusations that sausage makers used dog meat in their sausages.[20] In the early 20th century, consumption of dog meat in Germany was common.[21][22] The suspicion that sausages contained dog meat was "occasionally justified".[23]

@BoggledBudgie

I was once conned into buying a jackfruit pulled pork sandwich... didn’t have a clue what jackfruit was, assumed it was pulled pork in some kind of fruity sauce or something. It was the most disgusting thing I ever tried.

And to totally defeat the object of their advertising I wouldn't buy it either as I would assume it had pork in it (unless it was clearly marked vegan)

pigsDOfly · 22/11/2020 19:47

Might I suggest you try 'this isn't bacon'.

They do not lie.

Okay, the 'not bacon' is made in strips but there is no claim that it's 'vegan bacon' it's plant based and clearly states in the name that it isn't bacon.

Try it, you will not be disappointed, it's utterly delicious.

They also make 'this isn't chicken' but can't tell you what that's like as I haven't tried it.

sotiredofthislonelylife · 22/11/2020 19:47

@Veterinari

Peanut butter isn't butter Bombay duck isn't duck Albany Beef isn't beef Cats tongues are biscuits

It happens across all types of food - why is it just vegetarian food labels you have a problem with @SchrodingersImmigrant ?

Exactly!!

I have been vegetarian for well over 30 years. I don’t care what things are called. I am intelligent, and able to choose food without worrying about what it says on the label.
And, what is wrong with the term ‘veggie burger’? Surely it just refers to how it’s designed to be cooked and eaten. It’s not a vegetable ‘sandwich’.

Most vegetarian / vegans don't

NOT A SINGLE FINGER in the whole packet.

@Peacocking

Some of these products taste exactly like the meat they're replacing. The replacements all used to be pretty poor. Now loads of them are great. Oomph chicken, beyond meat burgers and sausages, richmond sausages, m&s kievs are all amazing replicas. I like the taste of meat, but don't want to eat meat or animal products for several good reasons. Why does anyone get so het up about anything that's vegan. It gets really, really tiresome. The packaging is clear, so why have a tantrum about something you just don't need to buy if you don't like it?
At last - a very sensible post. I am in full agreement!!
CrazyCatLazy · 22/11/2020 19:55

At risk of being ‘That veggie’
I wasn’t going to comment as I’ve been veggie for 15 years and normally keep shut because of the typical “you know a veggie ‘coz they’ll tell you” - but this argument come up at work all the time and it drives me mad.

I have absolutely no issue with people eating meat, it’s tasty. I decided to stop eating it as the taste didn’t outweigh my personal morals. Again, would never try to convince another person, ie the only veggie in my family and my partner eats meat.

Above is just background so I don’t hear the former.
I’ve never understood why what I, veggies, vegans or anybody else bothers somebody else. You don’t like it? Don’t want to eat it? Don’t.
I enjoy the taste of meat and now with all of these creations, I can enjoy it without feeling guilty. The branding is down to companies, but specifically designed to feel comforting and familiar to us that do enjoy the taste.

I genuinely have never seen why this upsets meat eaters. I enjoy a ‘sausage roll’ or other alternatives and it makes it easier to shop for/ask my partner to get for me.

I really don't understand why if one is vegetarian/vegan why one wants food names after various meats.

I doubt there's that many vegetarians/vegans consulted on the naming of the food products tbh.

The only name change I'd like to see is dairy milk being called "baby cow growth fluid". Remember watching a documentary about humans consuming other mammals milk and them referening to it as that. Can never not think of it that way now.

Elizabella · 22/11/2020 19:57

My pet hate is what they call a vegan 'steak' burger which is just a large, grilled field mushroom in a bun. Times that by 10 when they try to charge a tenner for it in a cafe!

MitziK · 22/11/2020 19:59

@SchrodingersImmigrant

I've actually just googled history of toad in a hole just to check if it was made with toad once upon a time😁 It wasn't, but interesting variations there nonetheless.
My theory is that it was nicknamed something less appealing than an amphibian hiding and somebody decided it was necessary to make it sound more respectable.

Turd

We should start calling all actual milks like that. "What are you drinking?" "Baby camel growth fluid"

"What are you doing?"
"Pumping some baby human growth fluid"

I think that's actually pretty awesome

Yep, every time. Meatless meatballs! Shout at the tv everytime they are advertised. A meatless meatball is just a ball!!

Once I ordered a salad in a restaurant and in the description amongst the list of ingredients it said ‘cauliflower cous cous’ - well you can see where this is going. I was so pissed off when my salad came with ZERO CARBS in it that I demanded they bring me a side of actual cous cous and they said that they had no cous cous in the kitchen. WTAF?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 20:01

Honestly, I am now enjoying this thread just for the weird facts and names.

I was under the impression that flora was already dairy free, indeed, is that not the point of margarine?

Most Flora is but they recently changed the "Buttery" one so it now contains dairy. Annoying as I really liked it. Curiously, all Flora in Australia contains dairy including their "plant-based Butter".

So they listed the ingredients and you were annoyed when they gave you a salad with those ingredients?

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 22/11/2020 20:05

What a load of fucking bollocks - unless you're hacking chunks off a carcass you're telling yourself liessssss 🤢 too. Burgers aren't the province of meat eaters. They're only shaped meat patties just as shaped vegetable patties can be called burgers. It's all about how they're processed to be an expedient form of food delivery. There's quite a lot of processing to be done to turn beef into Spag Bol and no more to turn veg protein into a veggie equivalent. You're weirdddddd.

Jessica Simpson probably has a lot to say on this.
