Aaagr.

It started with buffalo cauliflower wings😔
There are no wings on cauli! It doesn't remotely taste like wings either! It's BUFFALO CAULIFLOWER BITES. (Which are really nice btw)

Then the Jackfruit Pulled Pork.
No. There is NO pork.
It's "pulled jackfruit" if anything. Liers.

And to top it off... Chickpe tuna. The hell, people😔 The hell... It hasn't even passed tuna anywhere in its existence.
It's CHICKPEA spread or something. No tuna. Bad people.

Liessssss. Why can't food be just called what it is🤦 There is just no need for all them liessssssssss.

Not with that ingredients. No. 😁 Hummus is so delicious though. There is one with lots of tahini in and made with ice and it's so creamy.

@Blibbyblobby who on EARTH is being conned into eating plant based when they think they are getting meat??
In Burger King and Macdonald etc the plant based burgers are very clearly labelled. They are everywhere. I don't think anyone has ever ordered a plant based meal thinking they were getting meat.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 18:44

@mogtheexcellent

Annoyingly they hide them in the meat bits on the sainsburys online shopping website. So vegan sausages are among the sausages.

Just have a fake food section ffs.

On another note I lived with a Jewish vegeratrian who ate fake bacon. Could never get my head around that one.

That is annoying. They should sort that.

My DH eats Macon. Mutton bacon. Wouldn't touch pork though. Tastes good. They have it in asda if anyone is pork free

I suspect there’s also an element of greed in including meat woes in the name - we all think of meat as being more expensive than veggies.

So if they try to sell a big mushroom to go in a bun for £3 a pair shoppers would just laugh and pick them up off the veggie shelves for a quarter of the price. Put them in a packet with a dollop of garlic butter and labelled as mushroom steaks, they fly off the shelves... likewise why spend a pound on a whole cauliflower that you need to cut yourself when you can spend £3 on a pair of small cauliflower slices and a sprinkle of seasoning and not have 3/4 of the cauliflower left for another meal...

And veggie meat free chicken dippers sound much more expensive than plain old veggie dippers and so on.

If putting steak on the packet meant they needed to charge less for it, there’s no way they would do so - it’s all down to £££.

Kremeshe · 22/11/2020 18:48

Oh god this reminds me when I had a macaroni cheese dish at a vegan restaurant. it was disgusting, tasting nothing like mac & cheese or anything edible. They also do jackfruit burgers, some chicken inspired shit too. Honestly what's wrong with a veggie curry?

Kremeshe · 22/11/2020 18:48

@wibdib good point!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 18:50

Your point is weird and petty and missing the point.

I don't think it is. You can't call something dairy ice cream unless it has x% of dairy. You can't call something y unless it has y in it and it's usually strictly minimum % (or maximum like sugar in a bread -Ireland case I think). So why are cauliflower wings allowed or vegetarian pulled pork to pop up. Or hot dogs🙈
Obviously it would be basically impossible to change name of dishes named hundreds of years ago, but the inconsistency about new products is just odd.

But the person conned into a vegan beef burger or Mac n cheese because it looks like the real thing is far more likely to be disappointed

This was me! Luckily I have a friend who is vegan & an excellent cook.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 18:52

@wibdib yes, good point!

@EggysMom

You're not alone, OP. I shout at the television when they advertise things like Quorn chicken nuggets - it's not chicken! It might be chicken flavour, or even savoury, but it's not chicken. [Actually I think these have been renamed.]

Okay, same argument with Asda meat-free piri piri chicken burgers. They are not chicken. Asda meat-free meatballs - they are not meat, just balls!

And why would a vegetarian want something that reminds them of animal based food?

Because funnily enough, you can like the taste and texture of meat without wanting animals to be slaughtered in order to get that.

'Not liking meat' is not most people's motivation to give it up.

TillyFloss10 · 22/11/2020 18:56

I agree that calling quorn nuggets 'chicken' is a bit pointless.
But I dont object the words, burger, nugget, sausage etc being used. I know people say 'theres no nugget on vegetables' but tbh there isn't on a chicken either! Those words are used to describe shapes really in my opinion.

Anyonebut · 22/11/2020 19:04

This reminds me of the time when DH thought he was ordering beef & tomato sandwich and received a (big) slice of tomato in a bun. On closer inspection of the menu, it was actually a beef tomato sandwich ! 😂😂

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 19:10

😂😂 awww
At least it was a proper tomato. Positive thinking

And there is such a thing as butterfly milk.

gingerwhinger0 · 22/11/2020 19:11

I've been veggie for long time for ethical reasons, not because I don't like the taste of meat. Occasionally buy the odd meat free product , because sometimes I fancy a 'beef' style burger. (approx twice per year)
I think most people these days would realise that the 'meat free' or vegan tag means the product contains no actual meat, don't see the problem with it.

BoggledBudgie · 22/11/2020 19:12

I was once conned into buying a jackfruit pulled pork sandwich... didn’t have a clue what jackfruit was, assumed it was pulled pork in some kind of fruity sauce or something. It was the most disgusting thing I ever tried.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 19:16

@Smudgeis13

I've just googled it. It's interesting looking "cocktail". Nice colour on it. I would try that.

The one ( or 5 ) I dislike most is soy milk , almond milk or rice milk
It's not
Or shall I just try and round up my herd of soy and see if they need milking ?

See this sucks. Lots of people don't know lots of the ingredients. I see confused faces when I mention kohlrabi or even sauerkraut. I have met an adult who never tasted radish. I didn't know some ingredients from other places too. We can't all know everything. I know what's jackfruit just because my vegetarian friend mentioned it. I too would think (before that) it's some fruit added to the sauce.

Yes. You are right. It should be drink. Like juices. If they don't have enough % of fruit they must be called a juice drink.

There are people who’ve been ‘conned’ into eating a vegie burger thinking it was beef? Really?

I fear that anyone that stupid perhaps has bigger concerns.

trixiebelden77 · 22/11/2020 19:27

Goodness doilooklikeatourist you must be overcome with rage and confusion when presented with a Thai curry featuring coconut milk.

Comtesse · 22/11/2020 19:31

People want to be vegetarian but tragically don’t actually like vegetables so try to con themselves bu eating fake food. It is an abomination and also OP as you say liessssssssss. Why people collude on this self-delusion I have no idea.....

TheShepherdsCrown · 22/11/2020 19:33

@Aquamarine1029

Veggie burger. It's not a burger, it's a fucking vegetable sandwich.
No problem with describing a veggie burger as a veggie burger, a bean burger as a bean burger. A beef burger is a burger made from beef. A hamburger is a burger often made from beef, now there’s a misdescription. A burger is just a description of the shape. Minced whatever pressed into a flattish circular shape, dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/burger Cows and pigs are not generally burger shaped. Indeed few animals are burger shaped. Likewise with beans or veggies. So there should be no issue with calling a burger of whatever food type a burger. Because that’s what it is.
gingerwhinger0 · 22/11/2020 19:33

Veggie, vegan food normally has a ‘v’ at the side on a menu, or it is in the actual vegan / veggie section of the menu. If you’re not sure when ordering stuff you can always ask.
Chicken style, beef style just tell you the flavouring of pretend meat product, much like a packet of chicken flavour crisps and there isn’t any actual meat in those either. How do you suppose they would be described ee1235 flavour crisps?
