Aaagr.

It started with buffalo cauliflower wings😔
There are no wings on cauli! It doesn't remotely taste like wings either! It's BUFFALO CAULIFLOWER BITES. (Which are really nice btw)

Then the Jackfruit Pulled Pork.
No. There is NO pork.
It's "pulled jackfruit" if anything. Liers.

And to top it off... Chickpe tuna. The hell, people😔 The hell... It hasn't even passed tuna anywhere in its existence.
It's CHICKPEA spread or something. No tuna. Bad people.

Liessssss. Why can't food be just called what it is🤦 There is just no need for all them liessssssssss.

Most of the new vegan street food/junk food trend is driven by insta. If the photo looks enough like the yummy, tasty meat-thing or dairy-thing it’s aping, it gets the likes and the shares, then more people who haven’t tried it see it, think it looks like it’s yummy and share it, and so on.

Although, vegan fried “chicken” is usually the least disappointing thing because the taste is the coating anyway, so it’s useful for me if we can keep that :)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 18:17

😂😂😂 second definition of toad
"an extremely unpleasant man, especially one who is not very physically attractive:"
Now we know why that sausage in there is called toad. That was probably first made by wife eho had enough of her toad😂

Imagine enjoying a vegan chicken nugget. Then finding out it actually didn't contain a dead animal and getting upset about it 😂

Omg the liessssssssss

Peacocking · 22/11/2020 18:18

Some of these products taste exactly like the meat they're replacing. The replacements all used to be pretty poor. Now loads of them are great. Oomph chicken, beyond meat burgers and sausages, richmond sausages, m&s kievs are all amazing replicas. I like the taste of meat, but don't want to eat meat or animal products for several good reasons. Why does anyone get so het up about anything that's vegan. It gets really, really tiresome. The packaging is clear, so why have a tantrum about something you just don't need to buy if you don't like it?

PattyPan · 22/11/2020 18:21

Yes, I am fuming that hot dogs are not really made of dog

Well my favourite "rum" can't be called rum because it's not made from sugarcane, but cauliflower bites can be called wings. That's the issue. The naming of things is just so harsh somewhere, but absolutely meh in another bits.

And why would a vegetarian want something that reminds them of animal based food?

Because presumably even that slight memory of joy is better than chick peas.

When I’m searching for items it’s much easier to search under vegetarian bacon for example than try and guess what they have named it.

I think that's fine. Bacon is the cut and curing, so I don't see an issue with it being made from vegetarian.

OP is complaining about (for example) putting salt on a bit of lettuce and calling it lettuce bacon.

Yeah. It odd calling them hot dogs tbh. How did that come about in English? My native language just call them sausage

I don't think pulled mold sounds as good.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 22/11/2020 18:27

As a veggie I’m glad as it’s just easier when shopping! You can scan for things really quickly, rather than having to look for what the shops might imaginatively name something.

Lazy shopper here, thank god for lazy veggie name makers 😂

CodenameVillanelle · 22/11/2020 18:27

I literally have no idea why this bothers you so much 🤷🏼‍♀️ nobody is forcing you to eat them, and if they encourage people to try vegan/vegetarian over a meat option then even carnivores should recognise that as a Good Thing (for the planet even if you DGAF about animal rights)

Oysterbabe · 22/11/2020 18:29

Yanbu.
Cauliflower pretending to be rice, pizza base, mash. Get to fuck.

Pomegranatemolasses · 22/11/2020 18:31

@LadyTiredWinterBottom2

Buffalo wings don't come from buffalo either

This doesn't annoy me aa much as cake made to look like other things. Just bake a fucking cake, l don't need a cake that looks like a friggin hand bag.

Buffalo wings originated in Buffalo NY, so not a lie.

Also I agree, stop with the awful liesss spelling

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 18:32

Before anyone names them as well.
Mince piesBlush It took me 2 years to dare to try them and find out it's honestly just fruit😂
I understand it used to be meat? I guess like pastilla?

and if they encourage people to try vegann/vegetarian over a meat option
Buffalo cauli botes could encourage people who like the sauce as well. There is simply no need for the wing part. At all.

It's CHICKPEA spread or something. No tuna
Isn’t that just houmous?

The point is that these are all vegan alternatives to mimic popular meat meals. They are designed to appeal to people who like eg pulled pork but want to try vegan. Calling them 'vegan pulled pork' is literally part of the marketing campaign to appeal to a specific demographic who wouldn't necessarily think about choosing 'pulled jackfruit' or something labelled chick pea or lentils.

Your point is weird and petty and missing the point.

CodenameVillanelle · 22/11/2020 18:40

There is a 'vegan tuna' people make with smashed chick peas and caper brine and other fishy flavoured things
mogtheexcellent · 22/11/2020 18:41

Annoyingly they hide them in the meat bits on the sainsburys online shopping website. So vegan sausages are among the sausages.

Just have a fake food section ffs.

On another note I lived with a Jewish vegeratrian who ate fake bacon. Could never get my head around that one.

But the person conned into a vegan beef burger or Mac n cheese because it looks like the real thing is far more likely to be disappointed and be put off vegan food than they are to discover the glory of plant-based eating. There are so many lovely vegan dishes out there, why all the effort to pretend it’s something it’s not and never can be?
