Aaagr.

It started with buffalo cauliflower wings😔
There are no wings on cauli! It doesn't remotely taste like wings either! It's BUFFALO CAULIFLOWER BITES. (Which are really nice btw)

Then the Jackfruit Pulled Pork.
No. There is NO pork.
It's "pulled jackfruit" if anything. Liers.

And to top it off... Chickpe tuna. The hell, people😔 The hell... It hasn't even passed tuna anywhere in its existence.
It's CHICKPEA spread or something. No tuna. Bad people.

Liessssss. Why can't food be just called what it is🤦 There is just no need for all them liessssssssss.

It does cause confusion. The restaurant were surprised that I was surprised that my halloumi burger had a beef patty in as well.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 17:52

It should be peanut spread. There was a case in EU about spread vs butter and the name had to be changed on that products. The whole country was pissed off. Everyone knew it's not butter🤷🏻

(Also AIBU to be unreasonably irritates by you adding 63 Ss to the word ‘lies’ every time...?)

Calligraphy572 · 22/11/2020 17:53

I'm veggie and some of these names irritate the hell out of me. Veggie burger? Fine - I think we all get that the name referes to the shape and style. No one calls it a veggie beef burger, ffs. So why veggie chicken nuggets instead of just veggie nuggets? Vegan strips, not bacon.

That said, I suspect that the meat-names appeal to consumers who want to understand what meat these products replace. I doubt anyone is buying them expecting meat.

Yabu. That's to illustrate how stringly i feel about them😂

Well, some words like burger sausage and steak really refer to shape/ texture rather than the substance- don't know how you could otherwise describe a veggie burger say- veggie sandwich would not be a good description

What I really object to is when you order a mushroom "burger" but and it is actually literally a mushroom in a bun because a) a mushroom is not a burger and b) Only a meat eater who doesn't intend to eat it would Think a single mushroom is dinner

shinynewapple2020 · 22/11/2020 17:58

I wouldn't assume that this labelling has been pushed by vegetarians or vegans . Most are more than happy to know they have pulled jackfruit without worrying that it's somehow been contaminated by pork.

I think it's advertising trying to be something for everyone .

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 17:58

I agree re burger. It should be said what patty is there.
Beef burger/chicken burger/rabbit burger/bean burger/vegetables burger/and so on.

Oh and btw. Boneless wings are a lie too. It's not wings.

@ScrapThatThen A cheeseburger contains meat, too. Surely the ingredients were listed on the menu?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/11/2020 18:01

Stop typing 'liessss' OP. I can't help but picture you as a disappointed snake Grin

shinynewapple2020 · 22/11/2020 18:01

@Aquamarine1029

Veggie burger. It's not a burger, it's a fucking vegetable sandwich.

Yeah but burger or sausage don't actually state a type of meat so they ? So in this case it's just as acceptable to say a veggie burger as a beef burger .

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 22/11/2020 18:02

Buffalo wings don't come from buffalo either

This doesn't annoy me aa much as cake made to look like other things. Just bake a fucking cake, l don't need a cake that looks like a friggin hand bag.

shinynewapple2020 · 22/11/2020 18:03

@ScrapThatThen

It does cause confusion. The restaurant were surprised that I was surprised that my halloumi burger had a beef patty in as well.

And this is a far worse case of food mislabelling .

Toad in the hole.
Pigs in blankets.
Spotted Dick.

All misnomers.

And the pasta "Strozzapreti " - strangle the priest.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 18:05

It's just baffling with the laws. How is this allowed?
Nice packaging though!

@Georgyporky

Yes when you say a pig in a blanket I picture something quite cute. And alive Confused

And why anyone would eat anything called spotted dick .....

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 18:07

Pigs in blankets
Well. Theoretically it is pigs wrapped in pigs blanket🙈 Brutal
It's still a pig though. Problem wpuld be if it were a vegetable wrapped in vegetable called pigs in blankets

It just makes it easier when choosing a veggie option to see what it is equivalent too. When I’m searching for items it’s much easier to search under vegetarian bacon for example than try and guess what they have named it.

shinynewapple2020 · 22/11/2020 18:09

Oh and in answer to your OP yea you are unreasonable in getting so worked up about something which doesn't really affect you in anyway.

Yes, I received a free sample of flora vegan butter in a recent shopping delivery. I'm a bit baffled by this as I have not eaten margarine/flora in over a decade (because butter is locally produced and tastes infinitely better) but I was under the impression that flora was already dairy free, indeed, is that not the point of margarine?

nosswith · 22/11/2020 18:13

As the person who first advocated the protected status for Wensleydale Cheese 20 years ago, I am with the OP about realistic food descriptions.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 18:14

I've actually just googled history of toad in a hole just to check if it was made with toad once upon a time😁 It wasn't, but interesting variations there nonetheless.
